      Awkward Travel Luggage

      • Yeah, don't leave it on a hill.

  • +2

Good price, I have four 81cm and they are still like new after 10 years of use.

    • I just bought a 55cm so hopefully the investment was worth it

    • how many trips? did they get banged up good in the airport and still good?

      • We've made more than 30 trips, traveling annually to Europe, Asia, and New Zealand with these suitcases, each packed with at least 23kg of belongings. The wheels are smooth and easy to push.

My girls (weighing between 20-25kg) love to sit on the 55cm carry-on, and we simply push them around the airport. So far, the suitcases have held up well.

One of the 81cm suitcases had a corner pushed in during one trip, but I was able to push it back out, and it returned to its original shape.

        • what do you think of the handle? is it as annoying to hold as the others say?

          • @Poor Ass: Holding one is fine, but pushing two with one hand feels a bit unsteady ( two suitcases back to back). The C-lite model has a better handle and grip.

            • @wangsk: So y would someone choose this over c-lite

              • @Poor Ass: I have both models in 55/75/81 sizes, and I think this one is lighter. When comparing them side by side, I prefer this design.

                • @wangsk: But the clite better handle bar than sport don't you agree?

Same but with 55cm carry ons, I have 4 of them. The oldest ones would be about 10 years old, and over that time I have done +60 flights (263,250km according to Flighty) with little to no change in the bags from new other than a few scuff marks. Lots of airport miles, hotel stairs and the odd drag along cobble stone streets.

These are the best carry on bags due to their lightness. They only weigh 1.7kg, and with the normal 7kg weight limit for carry on bags you retain 5.3kg for contents. They are still rugged, and should survive many years of abuse. Obviously if you are going to extreme destinations they are not the correct luggage, but for normal holidays to normal holiday destinations they are great.

These are possibly one of those BIFL purchases. Nothing significantly lighter AND more durable has been produced in the last decade of new carry on luggage being developed by many companies.

      • +1

Carry on usually wont have much damage its the check in.

For me its the wheels no matter i have the 81 and after 6years x 3 flights a year wheels are a no go

Weird looking. I remember when suitcases used to look like this: https://www.etsy.com/au/listing/1036584468/vintage-1980s-or-… - the design basically remained the same for decades.

    • +2

Perhaps you should have consulted with an engineer before questioning why suitcases don't look like they did 30 years ago.

Advancements in materials and fabrication allow us to more easily and cheaply make corrugated shells, which are significantly stronger than flat shells because of the higher second moment of area.

If you were interested, you can read about it: https://emedia.rmit.edu.au/dlsweb/Toolbox/buildright/content…

From an engineering standpoint, it still makes much more sense to use soft-shell suitcases for clothing, but for some reason, people prefer hard-shell suitcases and if this is the case, you are much better off getting a corrugated shall vs. a flat shell.

      • Cop that, Mr Wilson.

      • Agree with all of the above, but my preference for hardshell is for several reasons, mostly durability, ease of movement in airports, visible wear/marks over time, waterproofing and protection of digital devices (laptops, iPads, DSLRs) from bending/crushing.

I am certain that most of those issues could be mitigated by really good soft shell bags with padding, stiff protective areas and waterproof materials, but all of that adds to weight, which is my priority. Each to their own.

        • protection of digital devices (laptops, iPads, DSLRs) from bending/crushing.

I agree, hence why I specifically said clothing.

  • This the suitcase on the ad there’s a boxer punching it v

    • This ad was also pretty popular with 5 different ways to break it.

Owned all sizes for 8 years. Been used for over 1 year of travelling and been great. There's a known issue of the hinge being defective but they replace that at no cost. The wheels needed replacing out of warranty on one bag but that was due to them being damaged rather than defective. Would recommend.

    • Are the wheels plastic, ie.was the replacement also plastic?

I'm wondering if these sort of suitcases ever come with rubber wheels?

      • +1

It’s a rubber material that wore down. As mentioned we have given these bags a lashing and was only on one that they wore down so much than the wheel wouldn’t freely spin.

  • +2

I had the older version of this (same weights) but the wheels were tiny to the point I got rid of them. Small wheels are hard to push/pull on carpet.

That said, pretty happy with the july carry on light expandable I bought for my wife - least its bigger and not too much heavier.

    • Can vouch for the July brand as well. Also experienced sth similar with Samsonite wheels.

    • +1

Good lord - what size and weight is your wife?

  • copped, lets hope it's good. thanks op

edit: cashback hasn't tracked yet which is odd. if anyone is able to confirm how long it took theirs to track, that would be great

    • +1

I bought around when I posted and still hasn't tracked as of 11:18pm

    • just tracked with CR. thanks!

      • mine tracked this morning as well :)

Afaik, these are the lightest Samsonite's suitcases. the only downside is the single bar handle.

    • Yeah the single handlebar can be a bit annoying but if you're unsure you could go into a Myer or local store which has stock to try it out.

      • Or try the new version C-Lite which is made in Europe.

        • The C-Lite are significantly heavier at 2.1kg for the 55cm, these Lite-Shock are 1.7kg.

    • That seems like such a strange design choice! I'm guessing when it's full it's hard to maneuver?

  • +1

Thanks OP, got the 81cm with 7%shopback cashback

  • saw the big 50% off but it's actually not

  • Saw 10% cashback on luggage category got me excited, but the actual cashback app shows a lower cashback %..

    • Yeah because the 10% Cashback for TopCashback only went for a couple of hours. I’m assuming it’s the same for cashrewards

  • Where does it say 10 year warranty? I couldn't find it in the listing.

I had the similar one bought in Singapore from FB market place but zip got a problem and don't know how to claim.

    • The warranty is on the Samsonite website for the product.

It’s a global warranty and usually they have a warranty certificate in the luggage itself when you buy it.

      • +1

I have seen the warranty card but you need to have a shop stamp with the date on the card. Would amazon stamp the card or can you claim the warranty with the Amazon eReceipt?

        • +1

Not sure to be honest. I have a warranty card where a date wasn’t stamped I believe but I still need to contact them so not sure how that will go. I have heard they have honoured out of warranty repairs before though so worth a shot if you have one.

    • -4

No - you can’t be bringing the item back into Aus

      • +1

of course you can, upto $900 per person. you pay GST beyond that

          • +2

@Modesty: you need to go to ABF office (for Melbourne, it locates on T3 near departure gate) and let them inspect the claimed item. They will stamp on receipt which you will show it to TRS. This applies to any checked-in item that you want to claim.

            • @SickMyDuck: i did mine last month in melbourne. it's at T1, arrival area right at the end

              • @jmel: sorry my bad. It's T1 arrival gate. not T3.

I have the Firelite version, 55cm and 81cm. Similar same material Curv, but not the same. Single bar handle and not double wheel. Had done like 10 oversea trips and they survived so far with no damage. Down side to it is the single bar handle doesn't give sturdy feel compared to the new C-lite. I have no issue with wheeling them on any type of flooring.

    • I also have two firelites (55 cm and 69 cm versions). Sadly both of them are on the last legs. The issue with the 55 is the external rubber seal is crumbling and shedding bits of rubber every time the zip is used. The 69 cm the soft touch material on the handle is getting sticky and deteriorating. Have a feeling they were designed to last 10 years on the dot and not much longer.

Missus has 81 cm cosmolite and it’s still going good, but we haven’t taken it since covid.

  • +1

I ordered a set and had the 55 cm already delivered. However, it’s slightly larger (both in width and height) than my two older Antler hard-shell carry-ons. I could easily fit the smaller Antler into most overhead bins on its side, but the larger one was tricky. Given this Samsonite is even wider and taller, I’m afraid this won’t fit on its side into most bins. A little disappointed about that. But these are so much lighter, and they roll very smooth!

    • Will it fit in the bins on its other axis?

      • +2

It should, as its right at or just below the carry on Luggage Size allowed by most airlines including Qantas. And my larger Antler, which is only marginally smaller, fits when laid flat wheels towards the back.

  • Is it extendable (if needed)?

  • Thanks just bought 2 with shopback!

    • Did it tracked yet?

  • +1

Thanks OP. I fly out Monday for a family holiday and managed to get a local Strand Bags price match with a preferred colour variation.

  • Nice luggage - but hard to justify when the hi-fi a few months ago was about $300 less for the 81cm
