Upload Speed Is Stuck at 0.5Mbps on nbn FTTP with TPG

Long story, longer…

Been trying to help an elderly woman with her NBN. She's with iinet/TPG. Recently, she's been unable to sync Google Drive, which she uses. I try a remote and find the connection is unusable. Sent a ping to iinet.net.au from her home & had 100% packet loss. Ookla speedtest showed less than .5 up, yet 20-25 down. Wrote on her behalf for a new modem, as hers was many years old. Hooked it up and no difference at all? Well, the PC connects in 0-1ms, but when I did a tracert to the tpg server, each hop was over 3000!

NBN FTTP. It was always slow, but nothing like this now. This was at 2pm, WA time today, so not a busy time by any means.

Looked up outages in her area for TPG/NBN, and nothing showing.

What are your thoughts? Is this an NBN issue or TPG?

Help appreciated!

Thanks everyone. :)

PS: if she shifts ISP, what's the cheapest deal for a mobile broadband, no contract while she waits the 5- 10 days? She's panicking as all of her bills are paid online and she can't stay connected.

  • She doesn't have a landline connected somewhere does she? Being elderly etc

    • Connection is FTTP

  • No, the landline is provided via the modem. It's just odd and I really thought that the decade-old, surge-smacked modem was the culprit.

    Post the tracert.

Sent a ping to iinet.net.au from her home & had 100% packet loss

This is meaningless, as it looks like iinet block ping.

    • Can't post it here. I copy/pasted to an email I sent to iinet/tpg support though.

I was there with her for hours. I don't mind, she's declining in ability & I'm now just trying to get her going again.

However, I connected to the wifi with my newish laptop and it was the same. Def the connection, just trying to determine who to chase: NBN or TPG?

You don't need to wait 5-10 days.

Signup to Launtel on a new NTD port. It can be up and running in 10 minutes. There is a week free trial. If Launtel gives you full upload speed you know the problem is TPG. If Launtel gives you the same upload speed talk to Launtel support.

    • In WA, Future Broadband is cheapest, with great support.

      I'll look at Launtel tonight.

What's their support? AU or offshore?

Launtel is in Tasmania and they charge by the day. I think Future BB allow you to choose a new NTD port too but no free trial.

What's their support? AU or offshore?

        Why would that matter ?

  • Looking at replies, need to specify Perth.

  • What would your initial reaction be to nearly dead upload?

Misconfigured upload on the backend by TPG.

Hook up a laptop direct to NTD, configure it and test to rule out the router being stupid

Following this thread because I'm having similar issues - also with TPG. Can download/stream anything I want at any time but my uploads are trash. I can barely join team meetings without it dropping out a couple of times.

  • Is this an NBN issue or TPG?

Most likely an NBN issue but you need to go through TPG, you can't contact NBN directly.

  • Are you sure there isn't something running in the background uploading?

e.g. f she's trying to upload 1TB of photos to Google Drive or OneDrive at 5 Mbps (the standard upload speed for NBN25), it would take around 20 days, and that's assuming the computer is left on 24/7, using all the bandwidth.

  • I don't have FTTP but there was issue with my NBN connection where iinet and NBN were bouncing the responsibility of issue between each other, saying it's the other's problem.

In the end, I simply focused on iinet and said it's their responsibility to resolve the problem as my contract is with them.

Perhaps contact TPG and explain the situation to them. In my example above, iinet said everything was fine on their end and tests, but later found the issue to resolve.

  • I have had similar issues with TPG this week… I rebooted my router and jumped straight back up to 100mb

  • End of the story: the issue is sorted. I believe that someone at TPG FINALLY checked her connection based on the email I sent through and fixed it on their end. She reports everything is now running well as it was a few months ago.
