Motorola Moto G85 (128GB/8GB) $344 + $15 Delivery + Surcharge @ iTech (Price Matched @ JB Hi-Fi)

510

I was in the market for a new cheapish phone due to my crappy Z flip6 shitting itself. I was scouting a store that had this phone on sale to price match at JB at found one. JB Hi Fi were happy to match it + delivery costs bringing it to $352 for me. Using my $30 JB perks voucher brought it down to $322 + Delivery. Bargain for the new model of an OzBargain budget fave.

curved screen is a con. the amount of mispresses / accidental taps due to the curve really gets on my nerves

    • thats "cheeky" :D

    • +8

And it's hard to get a screen protector.
My current phone as a curved screen, never again though…

      • +3

Yup, this is it for me. Had a OnePlus 8 Pro, then (and now) Pixel 6 Pro, so keen to get back away from curved screen and be able to use tempered glass protectors again.

    • +5

putting curved screen on this is a massive downgrade from the G84.

      • if it wasn't for that i think G85 would be awesome

    • Is it just the edges of the screen that is curved?

    • +1

Cases don't fit nice and it's much easier to get cracked, because there's more surface area with concentrated angles to take impacts.

    • +1

I'm glad they went out of fashion, always thought they were an annoying novelty.

  • +2

Nice deal, looks like this model has esim support too which is a decent upgrade from the G84.

Don't have warranty on the Flip 6?

    • +3

On going issue between me, Samsung and Fair Trade Qld… https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/869963#comment-15779518

      • +3

Screw Samsung, I tried all avenues to get my S22 ultra fixed but they just kept running me in circles. Hope you manage to get a better result than me !

        • +3

Ì think I have a slam dunk case here so I'll go through Fair Trade Qld first then legal action following if need be.

          • @Rochie: all flip 6's came with a year of samsung care+ included so why don't you use that?

            • +4

@supergolf10: Because their warranty denial claim is ridiculous, so I want to stand up to them out of principle. Also, I don't feel I should have to pay the $200 odd fee to swap and get a refurb phone, due to a major fault with the device that Samsung should repair.

          • +1

@Rochie: I thought I did too but fair trade NSW were useless tbh. Goodluck !

          • +1

@Rochie: Legal action over a phone?

            • +11

@Murkymerv: It is like a $1500 phone and if people just let them get away with this crap then they will keep screwing people over more and more.

              • +2

@Rochie: Have you emailed Samsung VOC? Message me for details. I got a refund on my fold 3 back in the day through Samsung VOC

                • @misterpotatomato: I've been dealing with Samsung VOC for a week now and re-escalated it after my case manager gave me this outcome. He just came back today and said they have re-assessed and it is the same outcome. I've reported the issue to ACC, Fair Trade Qld, and I am speaking to a lawyer on Friday to get some legal advice on the matter.

My dad had an issue with a 9 year old iPhone 6S plus, Apple just bloody replaced the charging port for him for free, all within 2 hrs in the shopping mall. They probably felt sorry my dad that he was still using an iPhone 6S plus. Hahaha. I can see why Apple can charge nearly $3000 for a phone and $80 for an adapter and charging cable and get away with it and it still get's sold out.

      • +1

I used fair trading NSW to deal with Dreame. They helped me get a resolution where I paid nothing. It was out of warranty but within a reasonable duration. As for my flip4, when my screen started freaking out after a small drop, I was able to get them to replace the screen under warranty without issue as there was no damage on the surface anywhere. I bought through jb so I got them to give it to Samsung

  • +5

Thx OP, I got it for $314. Chat assistant forgot to add the $15 shipping fee lol. Then the $30 perks - done!

  • +3

Still has a microSD slot. Bonus!

    • +4

But loses the headphone jack 😭

    • +2

Gah!!! no 3.5mm jack or FM radio. I guess I will give this G85 to the wife and I will keep using the G84 then.

  • +5

they got rid of the 3.5mm audio jack on this model. Damn. Now I need to look at other options. Still holding onto my Samsung S10 from 2019!

    • +2

      I'm still on my Note 9! :)

      • dam son!

        • I'm sure you're in a similar boat to me though - battery loses charge pretty quickly, apps are starting to slow down and chug a bit.

          • +2

@thisisscotts: yup similar story here. I looked into changing the battery but its quite difficult with my model so back to looking for a new phone.

The issue the new mid range phones are still slower on benchmarks against my 2019 s10!

So, for a new phone I have narrowed my options down to Moto G64, G55, Samsung A25 and Realme 12+. Going to hold until the sale days coming up in the next 2 months and see if I can get them at a good price!

            • +2

@undadog: Funnily enough that's similar to me - really considered a battery replacement, and benchmarks of current phones showed mine was still pretty competitive. But then also considered the options for something new (with Android/security updates) and landed on the G84. As much as I've enjoyed my Note 9, I'm going to try something like the G84 and if I have to replace every 1-2 years then the equivalent per-year cost will be similar.

Black Friday is coming up so maybe you and I will be talking again then :)

              • +2

@thisisscotts: Yea I am hoping for a solid deal on Black Friday/Cyber Monday, Click Frenzy and if all else fails, Boxing day!

            • @undadog: Had a quick look at the specs for the G64,….and gee,….saw a 6000mAh battery in there, impressive.

But will the phone actually last longer sot, or phone is secretely doing more processes and sending

data as many phones do in the background?

              • +1

@ozhunter68: Not sure but personally leaning towards the samsung at this stage as its available in AU. 2nd choice is the Realme.

          • +3

@thisisscotts: My S10 is still performing remarkably well. The battery normally lasts through the day. Performance is fine for me.

    • +2

Me too! Samsung Galaxy S10 gang, rise!

Looking at other phones but no need to change to be honest. Recently got wired headphones and enjoying it MORE than the Bluetooth ones.

Battery, camera, performance… All still top knotch.

    • +4

S8 user here! Anyone beats this?

      • I thought I (S10 gang) was a dinosaur (but zero issues). What's life like with an S8?

        • +1

S8+ user. No issues with 3G shutdown. Still chugging along. Battery life could be longer.

          • @constipated: Have both an S8 and an S8+ still in use and although they support VOLTE, they will not call "000" as they were originally Singapore imports, so both will be killed stone dead when the government force their IMEI's off all networks on 28/10 I picked up two of these from JB Hifi for $380 each, before finding this pricing… considering returning now (still sealed in box so returns not issue).

  • +1

Have had the Motorola Moto G85 for about 45 days now, very happy with it.

  • Great phones for the price point! (Reminds me of early Samsung, the s5 era)

If coming from another android, make sure you apply all suggested changes to app versions via the play store after switching to Motorola, otherwise you may get crashes with their hardware/software.

  • +2

The original G. Get's an update, the new Ozbargain fav phone? I can see now already, $279 deal with 200 votes.

  • +1

How would this compare to a nothing 2a plus or a cmf phone 1?

    • +1

I'd be interested in a comparison too

    • Will a Nothing phone work after the 3g shutdown?

  • $355.50 delivered at Mobile City. Ignore the sticker price and see the discounted price listed just under it, using the code displayed.

    https://www.mobileciti.com.au/motorola-g85-5g-128gb-8gb-urba… (other colours available)

This was $4 cheaper for me than the iTech delivered price, but JB wouldn't match it because of the coupon. But if you're not using a Perk's voucher, then this may be better for you anyway.

    • +1

Yeah, I almost bit the bullet on Mobileciti as I needed a phone asap. Jb price match with the perks voucher sold it for me.

  • +1

has anyone rooted this yet to install Magisk/LSPosed?

    • For what?

      • for anything you want with rooting phones (modifying or changing apps, etc)

        • I don't know what I'm missing out on. Probably blissful ignorance. What am I missing?

  • Do we need to have it delivered by JB ? Can we click n collect to save cost ?

    • +1

yep click and collect is free when I went though checkout. i assume it needs to be in stock at the store

      • thanks

  • How does this perform next to an oppo find x2 pro? I cracked the screen and Oppo is asking for $390 to replace it.

    • +2

Ha, I've got a green line on the screen (appeared out of nowhere) on my oppo find x2 pro. Booked a service with Oppo and they called me back telling don't bother to come as they don't import the replacement screens anymore and don't have anymore in stock.
So yeah, I'm in the same boat as you looking for a replacement phone.

      • +2

Since they closed down the Melbourne service centre, everything went downhill. They were great beforehand, the same screen repair was only $260.

      • Stat warranty. Ask them for a replacement or refund.

        • Warranty is for 2 years, bought the phone 3 years ago

  • +3

Amaysim have the Samsung A35 5G for $329 with a 32gb sim. Phone is unlocked and will cancel the sim after the month is up. got it for my dad who is upgrading from a 3G phone.

    https://www.amaysim.com.au/devices/phones/samsung/samsung-ga…

    • Looks like a good plan too.

    • Great price. Just tried to get a price beat with in but they said that they can't since the phone needs n active service, which goes against their policy n the cheapest they can go is 524

    • Good specs/price for the Samsung A35, nice bright super Amoled screen, but no eSim though.

    • As it saus on the amaysim site though, you have to complete at least one recharge, so that's 2x monthly charges on top of the phone cost.

      • The total cost is $329 as per the contract. Don't have to recharge.

  • +1

I've got to toss up a replacement for my Mi9T, which still works fine mind you!!

Because Telstra decided not to support it for some reason

    • Is it already blocked or you are expecting to be blocked come 28 October?

      • Not blocked yet I've tried the fix but the volte icon still doesn't show up

        • Did you try the methods discussed in other posts. Turn the wifi off after applying those settings n you will see the Volte on the status bar..
I tried applying settings last night on my wife's redmi note 10 on Miui 14 and after rebooting there was no voice warning as well as message.
Not sure if it will work or not but after disabling you can see the Volte icon with 4G+ on the status bar.

          • @koolchamp81: I tried the dialing method, but I'll have to take another look at the threads to see if any other things have come up.

I still haven't seen the icon after toggling both volte and the wifi ones on

            • @HolyFosh: @HolyFosh : I have the same / very similar situation. I also have a Mi9T (Australian stock bought from JB HiFi back in 2020), and I have the same issue. I'm on Belong (Telstra network), and also don't get the VoLTE or VoWIFI icons on the Telstra network, even after doing the dialer codes (have tried many times, last tried a month ago). I will try again, but don't hold out much hope. It's a fine phone still, perfectly adequate for my purposes, although the battery life is slowly getting shorter as the battery gets older. At this late stage for the 3G shutdown, I don't see much option other than getting a new phone, which feels very wasteful.

              • +2

@nickj: It's so dumb, what you describe is my situation exactly!

And I still get a full day out of it myself easily. I wasn't planning on having to buy a new phone for at least another 18 months

Plus I paid 450 for mine in 2019, to get something comparable now it seems like I'll be paying 700~

                • @HolyFosh: Cries in Sony xperia 10V. Its a fantastic modern 5G VoLTE capable phone with the correct bands and from a major manufacturer, with an easy 2 days of useable battery life in a nice slim waterproof form factor. No other phone has all these features I need. But Telstra doesn't like it so its going in the bin apparently. So now I need to settle for a phone that doesn't have all these features I already had.

  • +2

They also have edge 50 fusion on sale, you may be able to price match at jbhifi

  • This is a decent price, but the camera seems a step down from the G84.

    • Yep. You can get a g84 at less price with more storage

      • +2

Where. I can't find any on sale right now

    • can you clarify why it is a step down? the back camera looks very similar to me. The front camera seems to be better at least

      • +1

        Smaller sensor

  • +1

I got this for my wife - $314 from JB. It's a great phone for the money - and even comes with a 33W charger. Most of the main brands have done away with those.

    Recommended.

  • Mother in law is getting the messages that her phone won't work with the 3g shutdown. How does this compare to her poco x3 pro? The Poco has been a great device and supports volte so her having to fork out for another phone that might be slower/worse won't be fun.

EDIT: scratch that, she's with kogan. Kogan uses vodafone as their carrier, and they haven't had 3 G since January 2024. Looks like she's good to keep her phone :)

    • Is the phone still working on Voda network ?
      TIA

      • It's still working, but she did receive a message that they were going to block her phone. We just gave in and got her an Oppo A79 from JB HiFi so that she wouldn't need to stress about it any further.

  • Does this phone work on the 4g bands that telstra use?
I realise its 5g phone but just wondered about the 4g on telstra when your out of 5g range
