This means your phone will no longer work.

We value our customers and understand how important it is for all our customers to stay connected. To help with the upgrade of your phone ahead of the switch off, we are giving you 100GB of data* to use until 31st May 2025, on us.

This one-time bonus has just been applied to your current plan. To access it, you’ll need to move to a new 4G/5G compatible device. Examples of compatible devices can be found here."

I still prefer the $200 off code

    • I got both. Just didn't use the new phone yet. Waiting to see if I'll really be impacted or not.

A discount on a new headset is fitting , but gifting extra data does not help pay for a phone last time I checked.

Wait for the next delay to the 3G shutoff. There are major problems with switching off 3G and very few people if any understand what will be cut off if they go ahead and do it. It is very high risk and the consequences could be dire. Literally life+death. Emergency numbers rely on 2/3G regardless of the phone being used and lots of phones that rely of VoLTE connection will also stop working with no 3G. In addition, most phones purchased overseas as opposed to Australian-market phones will also be locked out from working if 3G is shut down, even if they support 4/5G and VoLTE. This is very much wanted by the telcos because they then get to sell a whole stack of new phones, but at the cost of pissing off one helluva lot of customers, when their relatively very new phones are suddenly dead in Australia.

If it goes ahead, Australia will only be the third country in the world to kill off both 2G and 3G and be by far the biggest. There is no precedent set yet to know just what's going to be crippled. Australia is the guinea pig. I suspect if the shutoff actually happens, it will very quickly be reversed when the lawsuits start for people who couldn't call an ambulance for a heart attack or stroke victim.

What I didn't realise is there are multiple incompatible implementations of VoLTE. According to Australia to Block Internationally Purchased 4G/5G Phones. Apparently Telstra have a carrier specific implementation, that requires effort & skill to make work, so it may mean purchasing a new phone when changing network.

It reminds me of checking if phone supports Band 28, but this is way worse as there isn't a way to determine if 000 will work. Add to this that Telcos benefit from selling phones on contract and they have little incentive to be proactive.

    • @legoman there are lots of countries that have switched off 3G. USA did it in 2022.

      • The last time I was in USA, they were all still about CDMA and I was considered very cutting edge for having a GSM phone! It was a mission and a half finding a phone shop that could offer me anything for a GSM phone.

      • Can you name one?

        • One what? Country that has killed off 3G? Well, @costas60 says USA is one, but I don't really understand the relevance to this news to be honest. I was clearly talking about the cessation of both 2G AND 3G together at the same time. As opposed to 2G OR 3G in proper boolean-speak. I'm sure lots of people can state many countries they've visited that have switched off either 2G or 3G entirely, but NOT both together.

To be fair, 99% of people would struggle to determine whether or not 2G signals had in fact been switched off or not, because without specialised equipment, it would probably require a very old phone now to test it, and I seriously doubt there are many people left with such devices still in a working condition. Modern phones won't even report that they're using a 2G signal on their notification bar because it's so old, it's deemed obsolete and not worth indicating to an audience that probably wouldn't even understand what it meant anyway. The only other way of effectively testing it would be to call the emergency number of the country to experience it falling back to a 2G signal, but I wouldn't recommend doing that.

However they still have 2G Networks active so emergency phone calls fall back to 2G.

Australia will have No 2G or 3G so phones will have to work on 4G or 5G to call 000 - they may still default to 2G/3G to call emergency

Also this could be a big deal for International visitors as their phones are expecting 2G/3G for emergency calls

Are we going to expect International Visitors to buy new phones to work in Australia??

Is this because so many people are complaining about 3G being shut down?

Nobody knows for 100% sure because there are no universal standards for VoLTE adoption. The phone manufacturers and telcos have just made up their own protocols for making VoLTE work. Some even require an app to be manually downloaded to the phone to create the codec to make VoLTE work. Because there's no standard, it's impossible to predict which phones will continue to work and which ones won't.

The worst case is that no-one will be able to connect to 000 or 112 because these calls are routed via 2/3G
All people with phones purchased overseas will cease working even if they say they support 4/5G because the foreign VoLTE protocols are incompatible with Australian telcos
All tourist visitors to Australia expecting to use their personal phones will find they are only able to be used on wifi, because nothing requiring phone network data will work
Even brand new phones using the very latest generation software will be instantly crippled if they weren't bought from a telco like Telstra, Vodaphone or Optus in Australia.

The Aussie telcos are pushing for the switch off obviously because it will severely narrow the options and funnel all phone purchasers to them exclusively, because anything else is not guaranteed to work.

I have xiaomi mi mix 3 5g. Bought in Australia.

Last week I used the sim with this phone for 1 day and today I got sms and email that my phone won't work properly when 3g will shut off.

I think my phone will work. This phone never got any android OS updates(android 9). Maybe that's why it won't work officially but I have bootloader unlocked and custom rom (android 14) installed.

It have volte (which may or may not work) and vo5g. Wo I am guessing it will work after 3g turn off. And I am also hoping to get 200 dollar code :).

        • This whirlpool thread might help you enable VoLTE.

          • +2

@mathew42: It is not just volte. All phone nee to make E000 calls to all carriers via VOLTE.
Xiaomi has sent email saying that their phones from the will not work.

            • +1

@costas60: Xiaomi has sent email? To whom?

              • +1

@djoz: Several people look at whirlpool forums. People sent them an email and they replied that their phones will not work after the shutdown. These are more than a year old the new ones might be ok

      • There are so many incorrect and alarmist statements in there, that I don't know where to start.

        • I'm curious to know which statements you consider incorrect.
At the moment it appears like a potential mess.

I'm not disputing it is a mess.

Yeah, because the thing that people that have been happy on 3G need is more data!

    • Exactly. Give away as much as you want because they'll never be able to use it anyway. May as well give away a million GB of data to grab the headlines, because no-one will ever be able to physically use it anyway. I get 80GB to use for an entire year and I can barely ever get through more than 10% of it.

      • I can use a few hundred GB in a month, so I’ll be happy with free data.

        • The only way I could do that would be to tether my phone to my computer and then run bittorrent through it unthrottled while the phone sits under a bowl of ice to keep it cool!

  • This one-time bonus has just been applied to your current plan. To access it, you’ll need to move to a new 4G/5G compatible device.

How? I already see the Bonus data applied to my account. How would they prevent me from using it with my current device? As per existing order of preference, Bonus Data gets used first, then Plan data, and then Data Bank.

So what I am using now is really the Bonus Free Data itself (without changing my phone yet)
