Would take up this deal - but realise I can reuse my old colormunk smile with DisplayCal software.

    • I wonder how accurate my old Huey is these days…

Keep in mind this is intended for LCD displays and SDR profiles only, but it should be easy enough to get around the one monitor restriction.

  • Awesome deal for professional photographers

Have done a quick research and decided to pass on this one. Will wait for a Calibrite deal instead,

    Quoted from Reddit

Recommended Colorimeter: X-Rite i1Display Pro, which can be found in the following retail variants:
ColorMunki Display (discontinued, equivalent to X-Rite i1Display Studio)
X-Rite i1Display Studio/Pro/Pro Plus (discontinued, equivalent to Calibrite models)
    Calibrite ColorChecker Display/Display Pro/Display Plus
All of them use the same hardware and work with DisplayCAL, with the Pro being a bit faster and the Plus additionally being accurate up to 2000 nits instead of 1000. Proprietary software generally only supports the Pro, and in some cases also the Plus variant.
As they remain accurate over many years, buying one used is fine.
The SpyderX is also good, but objectively worse. Only recommended if it can be found significantly cheaper.

    • Only recommended if it can be found significantly cheaper.

      it IS significantly cheaper.

accurate at 2000 nits? Who on earth is doing professional color grading at brightness like that? srgb is more than enough for most people

I grabbed one of these to calibrate two identical monitors. Even after calibration, they still look significantly different.

Probably a pebcak but still annoying/not straightforward haha

    • which software? Noticed DisplayCal asks to calibrate WB balance and brightness before attempting colour calibration.

      • I just used the datacolour one. I didn't realise you could use third party ones.

        • yeah, OEM software aren't as good as DisplayCal as I found out recently. Also depends on the age of your monitors, technically with age they deteriorate, hence why calibration software normally requires recalibration on monthly basis.

That said, can see why colour grading professionals pay for self-calibrating monitors and expensive eizo monitors. For everyday social media and posting, i'll stick to 99-100% sRGB.

  • how does this compare to the X2 Ultra ?

  • Can these be used for OLED TV?

    • Yeah wondering if it can do hdr and to what brightness.

  • I've got an old Spyder 4 Pro (something like that). Haven't tried it in a while but just thinking aloud surely the hardware device itself is still fine for the purpose, just needs to have the software run ok?

    • I remember hearing that they degrade over time. A quick google tells me that older devices (apart from some of the Xrite models) used an organic filter that degraded so they arent accurate after about 3 years (some more info here)

How far out the accuracy is I have no idea, probably still better than no calibration but probably not something you could rely on professionally. Use DisplayCal instead of what ever software came with it.

    • only a fool would buy at full retail price
