You can also get MiFare Ultralight EV1 cards on AliExpress, and use these in place of the (frankly expensive) MYO cards. I've used this listing twice and they work beautifully, but need a few extra steps to work with the YOTO.

Use NFC Tools on Android to format as 48b instead of 128b using the following custom command (has to be the first thing flashed on the card) A2:03:E1:10:06:00,A2:04:03:04:D8:00,A2:05:00:00:FE:00 Source

Create a playlist, link with an official MYO card, insert into the Yoto to download the playlist, then clone to your other card using NFC tools. Source

A bit of stuffing around, but brings the price down dramatically (up to $5AUD per MYO card in the Yoto store down to about $1.25 AUD per card).

      • Can you reuse them then or do you just update that playlist

        • you can update the playlist on a "real" MYO, then copy to a card using NFC tools. As many times as you like.

Only need that command the first time

          • @WHAMBAM88: thanks, got mine over the weekend and been using the MYO card that came with it.

Waiting for the Aliexpress order to arrive this week.

So you can't link the card directly in the Yoto, it has to be cloned?

            • @impoze: Thats right. I couldn't get the Yoto App to write directly to the 3rd party cards

Cloning from one of their official MYO cards works well, and plays in the device.

Work noting that I have been putting the (official) MYO card into the Yoto player to download the playlist too, and just using 3rd party cards for playback later

              • @WHAMBAM88: yeah, I'll probably stick with your tried method then.

              • @WHAMBAM88: also couldn't get the Yoto to write directly to the card or download the playlist but cloning & playback works just fine like you.

I received my cards and they were already formatted as 48b, just had to format them and they were ready to be cloned.

      • So I did exactly this.

And it worked for all 9 cards (stuffed the first) for the first dumb recording I made.
After that I added some actual content from Youtube2mp3 to another playlist.

Configured it to the original card, copied 1 of the 9 working cards.
And whenever I try to put it in I just get a cloud now.

I've tried multiple devices but I can't seem to get them to work anymore.
It feels like the blanks have been 'soft locked' server-side or something weird.

        • did you have it plugged in and let it complete downloading from the original card before trying to play from cloned card?

      • Received my second set and they were already formatted as 128b.

Tried the hex code but they still stayed as 128b.

Does even reading them lock them from being reformatted to 48b?

Highly recommended if you are trying to avoid screen time, have had the mini for about a year (had to buy from the UK at that time) and about 20MYO cards.

Lots of guides out there on how to make the MYO looks very professional.

Also use Borrowbox to get certain audiobooks that's not on YouTube/Spotify. My library has audiobooks by mem fox, Julia donaldson, peppa, pig the pug series etc.

    • You rip the audio from borrowbox? Or play via separate device via bluetooth

      • +2

You can download the mp3 if you open Borrowbox via desktop

  • we have had a yoto mini for a few years now and its been a great success.
whilst ive made a few MYO cards, you can also just upload your mp3s and queue the playing from your phone (avoiding having to buy more or reuse the myo cards).
ive used borrowbox as well as a youtube downloaded to create content.

theres also a range of podcasts you can use with the yoto (for free). highly recommend silly stories for kids.

    • So it has local storage too or in cloud?

      • 32gb

  • We have the mini at home. My 2 year old loves it, my 5 year old not so much. I also recommend buying a pack of MYO cards then putting on songs or audiobooks for your kids.

I think the yoto is a competitor to the Tonie in the audioplayer-for-kids space, though I think the Yoto is better as you're not stuck buying a bunch of unwieldy figurines, but YMMV.

  • Try a lot of different books with the MYO cards too! My 3 year old doesn't love some of them, but is obsessed with others.

I found it cheaper to stack the referral code along with taking up a trial membership which gave me free shipping and a bit of a discount too, from their page, but I didn't check the Prime offer.

  • i bought - but did notice it may be oos?

  • any alternatives for the case? the adventure jacket for $49.99 is almost half the price of the unit

—- found them on aliexpress for around $8 USD

Have been using it over the last few days and kids have picked it up easily.
Currently building out my own playlists for when the MYO cards arrive from aliexpress.

The MYO Studio extension is a massive timesaver.
