Awesome bargain! $100 for $100. Free card.

  • +2

but why? why not just use your credit card if theres no discount?

i only buy it when its 10% off?

    • +22

Because you can purchase these cards with your AMEX and earn QFF points or AMEX MR points for no transaction fees. Then use these cards to make ATO repayments for very little fees (debit card rates, ~50 cents per transaction). Makes SNIPP and B2BPay and others look expensive.

      • +5

Exactly. Also deft for strata payment, health funds, bills etc.

      • So if I didn't want to use snipp so I can pay rent, I buy a huge stack of these each month and pay rent in lots of $100?

      • -4

So is this better ;or 10% off with purchase fee?

Ahha, no is not. But if you have to pay your bills now you cannot wait for 10% off.

        • I dont likes the fact that you cant think likes a criminal mind mathematician

    • +4

Ato and deft payments. Use your credit card and still make lots of points and pay lower fees. We are ozbargainers, not fools.

      • +1

I just love that the same question and answers on these deals every single time :)

Of course 10% is better but what would you do when there is no discount and u have to pay ATO or deft ?

  • Any idea why i cant check my balance online?

    • +1

      incognito window will do

  • +8

    We need the 10% off!

  • -3

Already bought $20k+ worth last week at 7.5% off.

I have tax bill to pay every year but I always put it on a payment plan for 0% interest 😀 works out approx 3% annualized return by keeping money in the bank for longer

    • how do you negotiate with ATO?

      • Ring them

        • Thanks for replying mate. Is that hard to negotiate?

          • +1

@Tomorrow: Haven’t tried it myself but have heard from multiple people first hand that they’re actually pretty open to it.

Have also read in a few groups that they’re getting a bit more rigid in recent times due to a lot of people taking advantage of it.

Can’t hurt to give them a ring and try your luck

      • I can set up payment plan online in mygov

        • zero interest?

          • @Tomorrow: Yep. Well, I am charged interest which is credited back, so effectively 0%

      • On the portal just select to setup a payment plan

    • But you can also still pay with these…. And then you earn points

      • That is true! But I would have to outlay funds upfront for what would be 1% value in rewards point

        • You just have to pay a day before is due….

          • @fozzie: They would have to outlay funds to buy the giftcards now. That means no bank interest.

            • @caperite: Well if pay by Amex they give you another 60 days free too….

              • -3

@fozzie: Delaying payment is still much better than buying gift cards WRT ROI

  • Re:

'Great for those that have ATO tax bills to pay and are seeking points for ATO spend.'

So, you get 'FlyBuys' points when you buy these cards, then you can use the cards to pay your ATO debt. Is that right? Or is there some way to get Qantas Frequent Flyer points when buying or spending these cards?

Does the ATO apply a surcharge for paying with a credit card, like most such mobs do? If so, even if that surcharge was only 1%, wouldn't you still be better of just doing a direct bank transfer to pay an ATO debt?

    • I don't think you get Flybuys with this.

50 cent surcharge charged by the ATO on the $250 prepaid master card.
No Flybuy points, only what your credit card provider offers you for spend on your card (e.g. Amex or Qantas points).

      • -1

'… only what your credit card provider offers you for spend on your card (e.g. Amex or Qantas points).'

Oh, so you buy these 'gift' MasterCard cards with your usual credit card, and get whatever points your usual credit card gives you for standard purchases. Do credit card companies even give points for the purchase of 'gift' MasterCard cards though? I thought that when they canned the whole 'points for paying off ATO debts' thing about 7 or 8 years ago, they would have circumvented this cunning route. Maybe not? If not, this is great news; but it would be good if you could buy $1000 (or $5000) Coles 'gift' MasterCard cards … it's going to be a bit tedious playing this game with $250 cards.

  • Waiting for the 10% off

    • Aren’t we all

    • Same :( any idea about if or when the next 10% deal might drop?

  • Is there an expiry with these cards?

    • +1

      • +2

By law it has to be at least 3 years.

  • Is it good for paying HECS? Asking for friend

    • +1

      Yes

  • What do you do with the minimal leftover amounts? Most websites seem to only be able to charge the full amount so I always end up having a few dollars left.

    • +1

      @hippo2s
Spend it as a "split" payment for supermarkets/fuel etc…

Lots of businesses take split payments only thing I find they want another card rather than cash.

    • Can use it to pay tax online.

    • +2

you can buy the Amazon giftcards. They accept any weird amount.

  • For a large ATO bill, can you use multiple of these cards to pay? Just in separate transactions?

    • +1

      Correct.

    • +1

Yes just multiple transactions. I just processed 10 x $250 cards through the ATO Portal.

      • There's more to it than just multiple transactions. Got this on my 2nd transaction:

Transaction failed, please contact customer service.

Does anyone know what needs to be different?

        • Nope no more too it. This morning I purchased 10 cards and used all 10 cards.

I logged in the ATO portal and paid through there.

          How are you doing it?

          • @rockgod: My mistake, just realised the original comment was about making multiple transactions on ATO, not on Giftcards.

The error I'm getting is from Giftcards.

        • I had the same error on my ANZ credit card, it turns out the card was locked, had to call ANZ customer service to unlock the card and wait a day to purchase again

  • Yep, i've been using this service all year to make ATO and deft payments.
Still disappointing compared to the discounted cards of last year; but better than paying full CC fees

  • Can anyone confirm if I can use these to tick off the $3K spend in 3 months that a bunch of CC companies do to give you the frequent flyer bonus?

I am thinking of signing up for NAB QFF card. Buying $3k of these cards to pay my $3K ATO bill and getting 90K QFF bonus on the NAB card.

    • Yes these count towards your CC spend.

    • +1

Reading the terms and conditions, these gift cards are treated as a "cash advance" and don't count towards the spend (and attract immediate interest).

However, the reality is they see a Coles transaction and think it's groceries and it works.

Summary - no you can't…but yes you can.

    • Hey @curtturt

Did you end up doing this? I also just opened a NAB signature rewards card. However I keep getting "Transaction failed, please contact customer service." when trying to pay with my NAB card?

      Did you experience similar?

      • I am getting the same transaction failed notification

      • Got one card purchased with a fresh browser and tried again and failed.

      • Did you manage to find a workaround? I'm in the same boat (NAB signature card) with error message.

I've previously bought through this website with other CC no issues.

  • +2

Can confirm these work with the ATO. Purchased $20k of them back in July and used them all to pay my tax. Can use 10x per day.

    • Same. I’ve put through about $25k in gift cards in lots of 10x $250 each day.
wish they would just let us do an uncapped amount. We’re just adding traffic and load to their system

  • Hi all my math isnt my strongest point.

Just wondering for those using these cards to pay the ATO, have you done your calculations on whether paying the Visa – Domestic Debit
0.40% fee is worth it, to get the points (the closest thing is a supermarket gift card), and the time value of money being interest free for set number of days?

If my $2000 debt to be paid on this, is it worth it?

    • Depends on what you use the points for.

    • +1

      For $2000 debt
ATO charges $4 fees for using the gift cards.
Could purchase $2k of gift cards in 1 day.
Amex offer ~50 days interest free of debt, but even if you ignored that, $2k lost interest @ 5.5% (evening ignoring tax payable) @ 1 day is 30 cents.
      Total cost $4.30
Points gained…. 6000 AMEX MR rewards or ~2000 qantas points (value ~$26 assuming you just sold them at 1.3 cents and didnt use them).
So yep, worth it, even for that small amount owing to ATO.

      • +1

Basically cost is -0.4%, and value of points could be +1.3% up to 5% for business/first class flight redemption.

  • I'm not sure if this question has been asked elsewhere before but does anyone know if these prepaid mastercards can be used in-store at Coles to buy other gift cards (e.g. can I use this to pay for Apple/Myer/JB gift cards at the self-checkouts)?

    • +1

The terms and conditions of this offer says Can only be used for Online purchases only. In other words, the only type of transactions the gift card supports is card-not-present transactions (i.e. online transactions, mail order / telephone order - MOTO - transactions).

You cannot add this gift card to a mobile wallet nor request a physical gift card to use in-person at a merchant.

      • Oh I see, my mistake!

Would you happen to know what terms apply to the physical version of the mastercard gift cards sold at Coles? I've seen them on sale before but not sure how they're actually meant to be used.

        • +2

The physical Coles Mastercard gift cards can be used for both card-present transactions (where you swipe the physical gift card on an EFTPOS terminal in-person at a merchant) and card-not-present transactions.

You should be fine using a Coles Mastercard gift card to purchase most gift cards sold in-store at Coles (including Apple, Myer and Ultimate gift cards). However, if a staff member notices you trying to use a Coles Mastercard gift card as a payment method, they could always stop you (if they care to), because Coles states on their gift card terms and conditions that gift cards cannot be used to purchase other gift cards at Coles.

    great

  • I have successfully claimed 9/10 cards of $250 each. However, the card number 10th got error

"The card 510982******2825 has been declined
There was an unexpected processing error. Check your account statement to confirm whether the payment was successful before you try to make your payment again."

I checked the balance and noticed that the balance is still $250, but unable to process.

Is there any one having the same issue ?

    • +1

It happened to me on my 5th or so this monring. It turned out I entered wrong info either CVV or expiration date as it worked the second time.

Then my 10th didn't work so I guess the 10 card limit includes denied transactions. Will try tomorrow.

  • Do you get flybuys on the purchase?

  • +1

Hi Ozb brains trust. Anyone know why I get error "Please contact customer support", when trying to purchase 10x $250 gift card???

    • Getting the same now

    • Try buying 5 cards instead of 10. and just buy another 5 after that. Seems to fix it for me. Unclear if its the bank or Coles doing this.

  • Bought one today. Tried to use to pay ATO today - "Payment declined. Contact your card issuer". Might it be because I listed a mailing address when I bought the card? Spent half an hour on the giftcard customer service lines. They said the card does not hold address information, so some merchants will not accept it. Used it to pay an eToll bill instead. Glad I didn't buy more than one. Was I just unlucky having it declined by the ATO?

    • I bought and paid the ATO today with no issues. Did you make sure you were inputting the correct details on the ATO website, not only the card details but the payment amount as its is either $99.80 if using a $100 card or $249.50 if using a $250 card.

      • Thanks for the encouragement. Tried again, made sure the addresses matched and it was all A-Ok for the ATO payments.

    • works fine for ATO but I get "payment declined" after 4 or 5 cards in a row. It works again after waiting a few hours.

  • +1

Just a warning with these type of cards: If you are not planning on using the total balance immediately, don't count on the website to be able to check your balance for a long time (even when the cards are still valid, as in not expired).
I still have some physical cards from a year or so ago, that still have small balances left, but the website errors out and does not let me check any of those cards anymore.
Split payment with paypal did go through, but I have no way of checking the actual balance anymore.
I kept track of most of my spend via a spreadsheet, so have pretty good idea of leftover balance.

    • Incognito browser

      • No that's also not working for these old cards

        • Have you tried calling the phone number on the card? It always worked for me when the website is down.

  • Not just ATO or Deft, I just used these cards to pay my water bill through BPoint. $1.27 surcharge on $248.72. Sure I guessed wrong on $248.725 (99.49%), left my card with 1c credit but I'll be able to use it for free trials later on.

  • The cards have previously worked with DEFT strata payments, however today I noticed the decline message showing in transaction after using it for same as previous DEFT payments :

Declined - DEFT TOKENIZE , 00000000 St. Louis

Does anyone else have similar issues?

    • Did you enter the amount as $250 by any chance? You’ll need to deduct the fees.

      • Mine worked until the 5th card then this error started appearing. Have put down the value sans fee (ie. $249.01 for 0.4%)

        • Unless you were using card besides the one on this deal, the fee is 0.2% with these cards so $249.50..
And yes you can only pay 5 times within 12 hrs period for some annoying reason.

Edit: sorry I thought it was ATO payment. Never mind
