Aldi has 173cc, 4-stroke engine Patrol lawn mover for sale from 12th October for $299. I think Aldi sells these during Spring every year, looks a great value for $299.

      • Doesn't void any warranty. Every engine has a rated power curve. Its just with Aldi it's not posted online or anywhere.. Torque vs revs - higher the revs lower the torque.

        Here is an example: https://www.briggsandstratton.com/content/dam/briggsandstrat…

Generally 3600+ revs and the torque starts to diminish. However you look at a Honda engine gxv160 and 3400-3600 is its peak performance.

        Every engine will be different.

  • I always catch and in the green bin as I have couch grass and if you leave the cuttings on top it thatches quicker, then you get more work to scarify

  • What is the normal price?

  • My brother has one of these and one thing nobody seems to mention is that it's self propelled. I've borrowed it a few times and was very happy with it. I'll buy one and if it lasts 5 years I'll be happy with that, any more will be a bonus.

    • I got one last year myself and it still starts first go every time no matter the temperature so I'm happy with that.

It can cut grass that is fairly tall without too much issue but the tiny outlet or whatever they are called will block up quickly.

If you keep your lawn to a fortnight cut or even weekly then this will blitz through it.

The self propelled part also works well.

      • What about spare parts? Have you ever had the need to replace the blades, air filter etc, and how hard/easy was to find those ?

        • Everything is running fine still for me but I'll soon find out when I take it into the local mower place to change the blades.

I used to have an old machine I was gifted that didn't have easy to find parts and the people never had any issues so I'm hoping it will be the same this time around.

I have read that other people in the past had issues finding parts and the number to call wasn't very helpful but that was just online so I can't say for sure how accurate it is.

Often local mower places despise such models being brought in - will be interesting to see how you go. They might have generic blades that will work but sometimes don't want to fit/risk it as technically they're not made for that model and if something happens, especially if they fit them - they could be liable.

The blades fitted were either untempered mild steel or you've been bashing the heck out of them or both. Any decent blade should last for several seasons of domestic usage, basic touch up to butter knife sharpness with a good file or flap wheel on an angle grinder.

  • I bought this last year. Going strong with no issues. Self propelled function is awesome, though i feel a bit lazy after not having to push the mower just steering it. If you have lower back issues is it what you need.

i bought one last year after a few weeks it was on special for $179
doesnt work anymore though, i dont know why
i dont have the receipt so i dont think i can claim warranty

so i just pulled the old victa 1980s era lawnmower out of the garage and started using that again, its not self propelled like the aldi one but it just wont die

How do these old Victa lawnmowers last so long

      • I think every good gardener started with a Victa classic cut lol… They were just a solid engine. Obviously new fancy things are out now which are bigger and better such as the Masport pro power 224cc which is so fast you'd be running after it whilst it cuts shoulder height lawns.

Old Victa 2 stroke lawnmowers are:

    1. Simple, unlike Honda mowers.

    2. Have cast iron barrels, unlike Briggs & Stratton engines.

    3. Supported by a legion of backyarders who fix and sell Victa 2 stroke lawnmowers.

  • Has Bunnings discounted any equivalent mower to this? I saw the battery powered but keen to see if they have any petrol version on sale

  • Aldi is now advertising this Ferrex 173cc, 4-stroke engined petrol lawn mower for $299 on the radio.

They must have plenty of stock, plus it is spring.

  • I've searched all over Kellyville to find this mower, but everywhere seems to be sold out. How is anyone able to buy one? Are you going to the store early, before it opens?

    • I don't think NSW has received their stock yet, check the Aldi website there are numerous stock delays. Qld has not received their stock of this mower yet.

  • It was hot in demand. I was told that it came on Saturday and was sold in the first hour.
