Recommend Me a Cruise

Hi, I'd like to get recommendations for a cruise.

I've never been on one before. I'd be going with my mum and dad, and I don't have kids or partner. I'm not really into drinking / partying and would like a relaxing chill time. I think I'd be happy to spend $200pp per night or more, if it's worthwhile or a bargain.

I would probably start with a short 3 night cruise to somewhere close (or nowhere) to check that you enjoy cruising.

Then I would look at a south pacific cruise for ~7 nights. Also research the destination islands to check they are what you are after, but be aware itineraries can and do change due to weather, etc.

There are heaps of cruising channels on YouTube you can check out.

    • I wouldn't recommend this, for some people one of the worst reasons to go on a cruise is to go nowhere and be stuck on a ship with nothing to do.

Best you go somewhere with multiple stops so you get a good mix of cruise life.

  • I have been on a few cruises. Love it as a family holiday. There's something for everyone, of all ages.

Almost impossible to recommend a specific cruise, but here are some things to consider:

Which cruise company? P&O is more of a cheaper/party-style cruise. Carnival is quite family-focused. Royal Carribean and Princess are slightly more upmarket. Most others will be out of your price range

Where? Most cruises from Aus go to South Pacific, NZ or around Aus coast. Melbourne is basically dead as a cruise port. Main cruise start/end points are Syd & Bris

How long? I think about a week is a good time. djkelly69's answer is also a very good idea.

Room type? Makes a huge difference to price. Cheapest rooms are interior. On inside of ship, no windows. Wifey and my folks are not fans, but kids and I don't mind. Followed by oceanview (has a window). Followed by balcony. Forget the suites.

Cost? VERY (VERY) broadly speaking, a decent deal on an interior room might be ~$120-150pp/night. Oceanview will be ~50% more. Balcony will be about 100% more. I assume you won't want to share a room with your folks? Rooms are (mostly) based off 2 people. You travelling solo will make your ticket pretty much twice as expensive. There are some rooms for 3 people. Will be much cheaper all up, but you'd have to share a room with your folks…

Happy to answer any other Qs you might have.

If it’s your first. Don’t start on p&o/carnival
    Do. Royal/princess

  • If wanting yo travel this Summer and happy to do local, best bang for buck atm in the over 45/55 category is Holland America Westerdam Australia-NZ cruises and Cunard South Pacific or Australia to Singapore. Both are currently coming in under $200 a night for a variety of categories up to and inc balcony.

Just be aware of inclusions/exclusions, on board currency (almost always USD), and that you're unlikely to get into desired excursions now.

  • Disney Cruise. It is coming to Melb and Sydney
