Please Help! Miele Dishwasher Is Not Working

I have a Mielle dishwasher G4101U model.
Stopping at the beginning of the cycle, approximately after 15 minutes.
Pump wheel is not obstructed.
Non return valve is clean.
It is able to drain water.
It is stopping and flashing lights after one large bowl of water is drained.

Any ideas on what to try next? I'm off to bunnings to get dishwasher cleaner or anything else anyone recommends while I'm there.

Thank you.

Your phone autocorrected Miele dishwasher forums to ozbargain

  • “It’s able to drain water”, this doesn’t mean it could drain at the rate the machine needs during the cycle. You can test if this is the issue by removing the drain pipe and put it in a bucket or something and run 1 cycle.

    • Thanks for this I have done this, and it drained an entire full bowl. Maybe 2 L in size?
      Anything further ?

  • flashing lights

What is the colour or sequence of lights? This could be the error code in disguise.

Is the water in the unit warm/hot after the 15 minutes of run time?

Have you tried the shortest wash cycle?

It's a 10yo+ unit so it might be more economical to replace it with a new unit than throw expensive labour and parts at it.

    • Its yellow across all three options mentioned earlier. I will need to check the water temp after 15min running.
Yes, i have tried using shortest wash cycle and changing to another one. No change.
Yes, if I cant fix it will look into buying a new one.

  • which lights are flashing?

  • Try a different cycle eg use the pots and pans one, or whatever. At least you then know if its particular cycle or its something physical (ie for whatever reason it cant get past that specific point).

Probably something physical eg a sensor or thermal fuse. eg: the dishwasher gets to a point and then a sensor should tell it what to do next. But the sensor isnt working so it doesnt go onto the next phase (or for a thermal fuse, overheats and stops). However from the sounds of it you can manually skip the step and get to the drainage phase?

does the dishwasher turn off when it stops (no power) or just stops and sits there with lights on etc, but no action? Seems to be the latter - do the lights display an error code (numbers usually, or letters sometimes)?

when it stops, check the door hasnt become unlatched - push the door in again (if the latch is broken sometimes it becomes slightly open over time as a result of the washing cycle)

  • I've tried few different cycles. Same issue at the beginning of each cycle. The dishwasher drains some water then stops and have all 3x lights blinking amber.

    The blinking lights are:

    Wash/Rinse
    Drying
    End

The last time this happened on my Miele, it was because there was a little sliver of bone that made it past the metal grate.
It was hard to spot, but when I took apart the entire base, and removed the impeller at the bottom, I found it.
That little obstruction was enough for the machine to trigger an error and shit itself.
Was a real hassle because the machine would work until it came to draining the first load of water, then would stop working.
I had to hand scoop the water out by hand each time, and eventually figured it out.

  • Is it the circulation pump not starting?

Try turning the motor to see if it is jammed. (after remove back panel)
If it starts when you turn it, it may just need a new starter capacitor.

    Cool story

  • I had a similar problems years ago, i cant remember exactly what the symptoms were but something similar to this i think, the problem was a faulty sensor which had to be replaced by the technician, apparently it was a common problem, the dishwasher was just out of warranty but he still did it for free, havent had a problem since

earliest available technician appointment is end of next week or week after

I would suggest handwashing your dishes until then

I would suggest getting takeaway or going out for meals until then.

  • The dishwasher tablet inside hasnt even been used this whole time, even after many wash cycle attempt.

    • That could mean the water isn't getting up to required temperature due faulty heating element. Run a test again and check the water temp before it drains.

  • just a bit more information: the dishwasher starts the cycle normally. After 6 minutes, the 3x amber lights start flashing and the machine drains water.

    • And the temperature of the water before it drains is……..?

I'd say it due to years of exposure to dihydrogen monoxide.

    Use the sink?

  • my miele did the same thing, went through all the filters and pumps etc, there was coffee grounds clogging up the join where the dishwasher drain hose connected to the u bend of the sink waste.

    • Thanks, we have cleaned that too and still not working unfortunately.

  • Wondering is Meile a good DW or just a another German brand to harp upon with least reliability?

Now generic brand are exceeding 10 yrs benchmark without any dramas at 30% of the cost of new Miele.

    • I think they used to be really good - we had one and our family too that just kept going for almost 20 years. We got a new one recently and the build quality is no where near what it was, and it's also not as quiet. Next time we're just getting a cheap generic brand and be done with it.

  • How old is your unit? Get the control board checked.

  • I think you have a blocked/broken circulation pump

  • Appliance tech here. Mieles flashing lights don’t represent a fault code, you need to enter service mode to get the fault code.

As it’s occurring some minutes into the cycle I’m going to assume it’s a heating issue or diverter issue.

If it’s a heater issue you’d be looking at a new heater relay or heater pressure switch.

If it’s a diverter issue you’d be looking at a new wash motor.

    What is your model number?
