  • Some people have huge connectivity issues with these. Fwiw my redmi is perfect

    • Firmware was released to fix this issue, I believe some had problems with 2.4ghz but again this has now been fixed.

      • What version of OpenWRT does the latest firmware run on? I have a Flint 2 sitting in the top of my wardrobe, because their "fix" was to go back to a really old version of OpenWRT.
For other reasons I needed to be on a newer version, and couldn't due to the WiFi issues.

        • they have a beta firmware running on OpenWRT 24, which has been solid for me for the last 2 months. But I also didn't have any wifi issues at all since their stable firmware 4.6.2 was release. Somehow this thing has stronger wifi than the Mercusys MR90X (same filogic chip) I'm running in parallel (which has also been rock solid since I bought it)

    • That was nearly a year ago. Old News. It was fixed with a Firmware update.

I would go for the Mercusys AX6000 on Amazon for $144 the wifi is so good I don't need my mesh anymore. Edit the price is back up to $158 but still worth it!.

    • I have a fully wired network at home so the 2*2.5Gbps ports on the MT6000 are more appealing to me.

    • Similar hardware, but still missing a few of the niceties like the extra 2.5gbit port, extra flash+memory and the USB port.

Same time last year I might have had JTAG in that list, but you only require UART to unbrick even the worst of bricks on Mediatek now.

    • I'm moving house soon. My office room will be about 12 to 15 metres away from my router in the garage. Do you think this would be okay? I also have a wifi extender I guess I could use..

I have one of these my only regret is I didn't buy one sooner. Had no problems whatsoever, better connectivity in problem areas & I use a tethered phone without issues.

Had one of these and it has been rock solid for me. I've got 42 wireless devices connected to it every single minute (smart home devices) and never had any issues. The phone tethering function save my bacon when my Internet was out for a week when I changed ISP.

    • The phone tethering function save my bacon when my Internet was out for a week when I changed ISP.

That's an interesting and useful feature. I wonder if there are other routers from the main manufacturers that have this.

Thanks, I ordered and got an email saying it won't post until October 8 due to the holiday and that I have to deal with paying any customs fees, FYI for anyone ordering.

  • Hmm, pickup one to replace my trusty old trusty old Netgear D6400 or hold out until a reasonable WiFi7 router becomes available?

    • +1

Flint 3 (or whatever they call it) is anticipated for next year, it is supposed to have wifi 7.

      • Well I guess it'll hold me over till then and can pass this on to the parents

I bought one some months ago and am very happy. For me, wifi transmission distance is most important and I can connect at 50 to 70 metres through a couple of external walls. Never any issues. It survived a fair number of unplanned power outages. Numerous smart devices connected. All good.

Only drawback is the limited number of 2.5Gig LAN ports.

I bought this during the last sale and have mixed results when compared to the Asus RT-AC86U it replaced. 2.4GHz performance is rock solid and stable but 5GHz is significantly worse in terms of reach. The new router is in exactly the same spot and using the same channels as before but 2 of my PCs at the far end of the apartment just won't connect.

    • Interesting. I bought one of these to replace my Asus RT-AC88U which had excellent Wi-Fi. This one has phenomenal Wi-Fi. I have an old house with solid brick walls and not open space design like today's new homes. I tested the 5GHz Wi-Fi outside in my back yard with both my Wi-Fi 6 phone and laptop and it reached about 50 metres or more going through 2 solid brick walls. No complaints at all.

      • Yes I have read quite a few good reviews saying the 5ghz is great and it was the 2.4ghz that sucks (but now fixed with new firmware). I was hoping it might be a temporary interference issue but it has been a month and my PCs are still stuck with 2.4ghz. My PCs are less than 15m away with 2 brick walls in between.

I did switch to a vanilla openwrt firmware so not sure if that could be the cause

  • I've been considering this as upgrade from ASUS RT-AX3000 as it's not getting the best performance out of my HFC 1000/50 plan.
Thinking it will be an upgrade for overall power and performance?
Hopefully my wired network may improve too?

Depends on what you mean by "not getting the best performance". Unless you are trying to run everything over a VPN or something, there shouldn't be a huge difference.

2.5 gig ports might help if you have devices that also support 2.5 or 10.

buy now or wait for Black Friday sales?

  • I have one of these, it's very good. Good features like Adguard and Wireguard baked in, good specs and good wifi signal.

  • bought this on regular price about 2 weeks ago and have been itching to setup wireguard and/or tailscale. auspost somehow lost it and its now bouncing between chullora and sydney sorting facilities from sunshine (i live in vic, btw) (sunshine vic -> sydney -> chullora -> sydney south west -> sydney-> ssw -> syd -> ssw -> syd -> ssw -> chullora-> still waiting). i bought this primarily because of beryl ax travel router that i found so useful whilst abroad, being able to combine wired, wireless either for load balancing or failover. found out that flint2 is basically a beefier model with 2 2.5g ports. hopefully my unit arrives soon. dealing with support can be hit and miss. they can handle most technical questions but almost useless for shipping/logistics.

God help you if it's being shipped by Aramex, they are a useless shower of bastards and will probably end up losing it :-(

      • +2

i had my fair share of aramex deliveries and have sworn to stay away from retailers who use them. thankfully, i have received this package today after a lengthy call with auspost yesterday. auspost basically kept delivering to the return address in nsw instead of the delivery address in vic. i had to ask them to intercept and blot out the barcode for nsw so it doesnt go to the return address. frustrating but im happy now that it arrived. i now have the whole weekend to play around with the features

I want to add my experience with this modem as well.
I had major issues where my NBN connection would just drop out for no reason every 5-12 mins and stay off the modem would not connect back to the NBN. After trouble shooting with the ISP they had no more ideas for me so I contacted GL.net
Their support was great but they couldn't figure it out either. So after 2 weeks i went to return the modem.

GL said to return the modem and get a refund. But because it was going to go back defective i thought i might flash new firmware onto it.
After the flash same issue but when i used the button at the back of the modem to factory reset it again. It started working for a few hours before dying.
Then i turned off the hardware acceleration on the router and it all just started working again.

It has been stable for over 2 weeks and have no seen any issues since flashing a firmware with a V6 kernel.
I wouldn't recommend the router who isn't a tech person but once its working it's a pretty good piece of hardware.

  • How does it compares to a mesh system for wifi range in a double story house. I am currently using a tenda wifi system which works fine. I am worried about wifi signal at ground floor. Router is going to sit on first floor and my house has a concrete ceiling . House is not big so distance is not a problem.
    Thanks

    • The Flint 2 isn't a mesh router so if you buy it and the wifi throughout the house is subpar there isn't anything you can do about it so I would personally look elsewhere.

      Maybe this instead?

If you have your heart set on the Flint 2 I'd purchase it from Amazon or somewhere else you can easily return it if you find it doesn't meet your needs.
