Home Gym Equipment

Can anyone suggest a good home gym equipment for beginners?

I was looking at this from Rebel Sport and wondering if this is good enough.

Don't forget to check Scumtree and Fartbook Marketplace as well. A lot of this kind of kit was bought during Covid and is now sitting around unused.

    • lol literally in this boat - but it's mainly unused because I moved house before I opened it and no longer have room.. Been wondering what to do with it. I think it might honestly go up somewhere for free even - as it's incredibly heavy to shift.

    • Thanks. Will check.

For a beginner, get a set of adjustable dumbells, a flat/incline/decline bench and a set of resistance bands with ankle straps. You'll get stronger and fitter than someone using one of those machines which are actually very limited in what exercises you can do.

    • Best advice

    • Yep, adjustable dumbbells are a great investment and save a lot of space. I went a while with just those and added a bench later down the track, definitely a very valuable addition.

  • What are you wanting to achieve? Fitter/lose weight? If so, maybe some cardio equipment is best for you. E.g. assault bike.
If building muscle, as the other poster has said, an incline/FID bench, dumbbells etc. Then option up to a half or full rack and barbell.

    1. Have you been to gym before/ got an idea of how to not wreck yourself?

    2. What’s your budget ?

I personally am not a fan of all in one machines like the example provided , as correctly pointed out, the options are quite limited if you have a long term goal of actual results.

    • Been to the gym before but got no time anymore. Anywhere below 2k.

      • 2k is heaps mate

Power rack with high Lo pulley, pull up bar and dip bar

        Weight pairs 20kg, 15, 10, 5.

        Barbell

        Bench

Adjustable dbs (either pairs 24, or pairs 40)

Maybe 2, 1 x 1 heavy duty gym Matts to help pad your floor for deadlifts.

        • Thank you. Will take note of this.

get an old front loader washing machine. push that around your back yard, try lifting it, shuffle walk it.

moving one of those machines around for an hour will develop upper body strength in no time

    • … also pulling it.

This is real practical advice and free.

If you want to stack exercise with adding value, move 10 tonnes of mulch in your driveway and spread it in your backyard, using a fork and say Gorilla Cart. Done this 3 or 4 times, so this is not just theoretical advice.

PS: you must be following Bryan Johnson's routines (i.e. sled pull). :) /s

      • Did something similar over the weekend, that is seriously hard yakka.

  • I dont know how they sell new fitness/gym gear anymore.. There must be 100x new stuff sitting round in peoples sheds being used to hang clothes on

  • I got one of these as it was an Amazon Choice product. It has a $60 coupon on it at the moment. It's excellent. At the work gym they use the Iron Edge benches. The padding is thick on this one. Highly recommend.

I looked at the dumbells in Kmart & Big W. All the hexagon ones the handles are too thick. I opted for the Hexagon dumbells at Rebel Sport. Just wait until they have another 40% off sale. To start I bought a 3kg, 5kg and 6kg. I thought next time they have a sale I'll get the next ones up.

I was watching Dr. Mike on YouTube. He's like don't start a home gym with all the fancy equipment. Start with a bench and some dumbells and go from there. That's what I did.

I also bought gym matts from Bunnings. Those cheap Eva matts look tacky. Two fit well under the bench. Probably need 4 to setup better. Protect your floor in case you accidently drop a weight
