TRS - Tourist Refund Scheme - JB Receipt

Hi, I bought a mobile as a gift to take overseas.

I wanted to claim tax refund on it when travelling. However, I realized I will need a receipt with my name on it. I contacted JB Hi-Fi, they refused to issue a receipt as it's been 7 days. Also, they are not accepting return as box has been opened!

I need help, what are my options here. Any tips please

Thanks

I bought a mobile as a gift to take overseas.

You opened the gift for someone else…?

      • +7

        I didn't assume, it was a question.

      • +1

could be a gift for him/herself.

To use in another country and leave there?

    • +3

bahaha they couldn't even keep their story straight when lying to strangers

      • -4

Really ? You just assumed it

        • In what world would I assume someone would open a gift for someone else? That defies logic.

          • -5

@ThithLord: Where did i say i opened it? Try reading it again

And Yes that someone could be on a visit here and going back ? No?

            • +3

@Alee91: Your post is far too ambiguous with your language for you to be indignant with how it's being interpreted.

            • +2

@Alee91: You said “they are not accepting return as box has been opened” so yes, you explicitly stated you opened it.

              • -6

@jaejae69: Not really, it could be opened by the person who I gifted ? There can be any scenarios which you might not be able to think of.

Appreciate the guys who have answered my queries, instead of asking for color of the phone or gift occasion like other Sherlocks

@Alee91: So you want to claim TRS on an item that is not yours anymore?

    • For my family member, they are on tourist visa here, going back

      • +6

Are you going with them? The receipt needs to have the name of the person travelling overseas. It will need your family member's name.

        • +3

          good point.
morale of the story here, please be as clear as possible when asking questions, include the phone model and the price :D
ah the Lord above has said the same

          • @CyberMurning: All i wanted to know was if there is another way to prove it to border force and more importantly whether JB hifi can legally refuse to issue a receipt?

        • Yes @CodeXD, i am travelling with them

  • +2

I will need a receipt with my name on it.

    only if over $1000

    • It is over $1000

  • +6

just use the phone and be happy.
    egg has been broken

    • +1

Either that or have to take it all the way to the Prime Minister

  • Gumtree. Sell cheaper, buy again and request to include your name this time.

Get creative with MS Publisher, Make up you own receipt.

      Forging a tax receipt, genius

      • +3

its ozb rules, save $100 now and worry the consequences later
        /s

    • Well as per the JB rep they used to write a name by pen on it , but they have stopped doing it

      • By pen… did it have to be witnessed or what? What’s stopping you from doing it by pen..

        • Yes thats what i am told, however they dont do it anymore as border forces is now more strict on trs, bcz of people using as a loophole

        • I can either do nothing and pray that they dont say anything or

get it hand written, get noticed and pray that they accept it

    • I would have done the same. Especially if I had the pdf receipt. It would look even nicer.

    Thanks all,

So basically all i want to know is:

    1) is there a work around here so i can still get tax refund?

    2) Can JB Hifi refuse to issue a receipt?

    • +9

      1) no

      2) yes

box is opened. Been over 7 days so JB refuse receipt.

It's done. Move on. Go fight the real battles.

    • Thanks :) looks like i will just try if they accept then good enough!

  • +1

I didn't even know of the name on the receipt requirement.

    • It is if total on recepit is more than $1000

  • TRS website didnt say that the buyer's identify has to printed on the receipt. Cant it be written?

The whole reason why it is required, is to identify who is making that refund. As long the name and passport number on the receipt matches the person claiming and flying overseas, it should be fine.

    • You have a valid point but
As per JB rep, they used to do hand written but they have stopped it as it was being rejected by border force. It is probably anyone can write anything.

Now i can take the risk of hand written and getting noticed or just to try pure luck maybe they dont even ask

      • +1

You dont really have a choice at this stage. Your worst outcome is claim $0. So no harm trying.

      • I had a hand written JB receipt approved by TRS last month. It did have a JB stamp on it with the specific shop details.

        • @star-ggg that sounds great! Can you guide me more about it, did they write information on top of original receipt? Would it possible to share the format so i can guide the local store rep about it?

          • +1

            @Alee91:

did they write information on top of original receipt?

            No, it's a new receipt.

They wrote what I told them to write- my name, mobile phone model, price and GST component. The ABN was pre-printed on the receipt.

I knew what I needed for TRS and made sure I didn't leave the store till I had it.

Mods - can we get a Forum Category purely for TRS questions ??

    • +2

      Probably need a Megathread situation

    • Yes!
      I’m sick of it 😂
Costs ~$60m in tax dollars to run/operate it (pre Covid figures) 40% of the use/ refund amount by Aus citizens
Estimated leakage of up to $500m (this figure is a few years old) over the course of the scheme

      • +1

Yep. Too many loopholes on this scheme. Person that invented must be either naive or dumb

Can you buy another phone and keep that box sealed at home, use that receipt and return sealed phone to JB on your return ?

    • Interesting

    • Just checked the receipt, it does have IMEI mentioned, just wondering if they do something about it in the backend

  • Assuming you rang and got some robot on the phone, I recommend going in to JB and asking, you never know they may be able to do this easily…

  • My local JB has a huge sign at the counter stating if you want to do TRS please make it clear when purchasing so your details can be printed on the invoice.

  • +1

Consider adding a credit card receipt/bill to match.

  • +2

Start your TRS claim electronically to generate a QR code. They will "zap" your QR code & probably take a cursory look at your receipt. They seemed more intent on having a valid Australian bank account to deposit the refund. Good luck
