Lebara Signup and Porting - Does it Require a Selfie-Video?

Lebara ID Verification - Information Page

Has anyone signed up to Lebara lately?

I noticed on their website, linked above, it mentions there is a ID verification tool that you may have to use. Does anyone know in which circumstances the tool is used? If it is only used for replacing a sim card where you have no access to the original sim card to receive an sms then that is fine, but is it used when you are signing up or porting away from Lebara?

Are there any other odd circumstances where you might be forced to use the app? If you forgot your password and they needed to verify you, then that would be another possible scenario.

Through the tool, you’ll be asked to:

Take and upload a photograph of your identification document (Australian driver’s licence, Passport or Proof of Age Card)
Confirm that the written information collected from your ID is correct.
Take and upload a brief video to establish that you are the owner of the identification provided.

I'm not comfortable with that, especially since no other providers require it for standard services. Can you imagine being unable to port out until you make a video?

    I'm not comfortable with that

    Then go elsewhere

  • No, options are DL, MC or PP

I've ported in and out of Lebara a lot and have never provided anything other than standard details as well as drivers licence & card number on the back.

I'm sure they could ask for a selfie video if they thought you were doing something dodgy.

I think it's where they know/suspect you have more than 4 mobile services in your name.

Somebody encountered that the other day in the yomojo thread:

  • I just signed up for a Lebara SIM as per this deal. I was surprised that I didn’t get asked for any ID at all. I did use my credit card to add $5 activation credit. This comment seems to imply that they use your credit card as a form of ID.
