Something to Heat Water to Warm about 40 Degrees Celsius - Kettle Urn Fast etc

Selectable temperature kettles usually seem to only go down to 70

Kmart has a fast water heater that does 25 and 70 so annoying. I think that's probably a bit too cold and hot plus it only has a max 300ml volume.

I've seen a ToDo kettle but it has bad reviews

Yes the hot water tap in my house will do that temperature but it's a crap gas heater and 3-5 minutes of cold water goes down the drain wasted

35-45 would be fine
30-50 would probably work
500ml minimum volume

    Microwave?

Is it true its dangerous to microwave water? I think it can get superheated in layers and explode or something?

      • +1

        WTF?

      • Yes, that is true.

    • -3

Yep its true, dont heat water in a microwave, or at least do so with extreme caution:

That sounds too simple of a solution. lol.

      Needs to spend money.

    • I thought that's how microwaves worked - by heating the water molecules that are inside whatever you put in the microwave.

    Normal kettle
    1/3 fill and boil
    Complete fill with tap water

Adjust ratio next time to tweak resulting temp.

    • I had thought of doing it in a cup but not in the kettle itself

      Its an option, thank you

I use a Joyoung D601 (chinese brand) kettle that does 40 degrees as a minimum temp with a keep warm feature. Bought from Costco for $89.

Great for brewing tea since you can select temps from 40 ~ 90 in 5 degree increments

Boil 400mL of of water to 100 degrees, then add 600mL of 0 degree water to it.

    • Haha

Add ice cubes to boiling water?

      Its an option

I've got a mercator ikuu kettle, looks like it does the 40 degree preset, among other things

    • Thank you.

So you set the temperature entirely in the app? The only thing that worries me is if they stop suppprting the app. Although i suppose kettles dont last that long nowadays anyway.

      • Nah it's got physical temp controls as well

    • Thank you.

yeah thats the one that does 25 and 70

So annoying why skip over 40? Whats 25 for LOL?

    OP …

1.) fast heat up to specific temp?
2.) keep water at that temp constantly over a long period?
3.) you talk about a min (L) volume - but what about a MAX (L) volume?

personally - i'd be looking more at urns rather than kettles … as that is EXACTLY what they were designed to do (may have to look at commercial rather than home).
    but then budget ???

    • Thank you. Do urns go down that low? 🤔 I havent found any so far

I have a Cuckoo brand hot water dispenser that heats at 45 minimum. I’ve had mine for years, think I got it when Costco first opened in Melbourne

Thank you. Is costco like aldi with limited time specials or do they have stuff for long periods like kmart etc?

You could drink water, allow time for your body to regulate it to your body temperature, and then regurgitate. It wouldn't quite be 40 degrees but it would be close. Well, unless you had an extreme fever but then you should really be getting to a hospital.

    • Jug of water in fridge ~ 5C …
    • Put 200mls (just less than 1 cup) in microwave to boil ~ 100C …
    • Mix the 200mls @ 100C and 300mls @ 5C in your 500mls container!

Theoretically you get 500mls @ 43C, but with the time it takes and the thermal loss of a room temp 500ml container, it is probably closer to 40C ;)

    • Haha thank you for running the calculations

      What about superheated explosions though?:

      • Hehe, doubt your water will be pure enough in Australia!

I heat reverse osmosis filtered water to boil in the microwave all the time, never had a container pristine enough for it to not bubble ;)

Optimal growth for legionella is 32°C to 42°C with a maximum growth rate at 37°C.

  • Whats your budget? I picked up something like this from Costco earlier this year - not sure if this is a newer model but we got it for around the $150 mark.

    https://mywaterfilter.com.au/products/philips-compact-water-…

Does water at 24, 40, 70, 80, 90, 100 degrees as needed. Will only boil the water when required so its not constantly using power.

  • Ahh had this when I had my first kid. I got the Xiaomi digital kettle, you can set the temp to 40 deg via the app, and it can also maintain that temp throughout the day/night. Was about $50 when I got it, but there's newer versions now.

Just mix part boiled water and cold water with a thermometer? You get used to the amount required pretty quickly. Like two thirds cold water and add a third boiling water or something like that.

Or if you need to maintain it at 40'C for a ferment or something you could use a cheap Sous Vide clipped onto a pot, or a yoghurt maker or anything controlled by an $30 Inkbird thermostat.
