Only a single m.2 slot ? Hmm tempted to upgrade my plex server from a 6700k but don’t wanna deal with usb hard drives

I am in the exact same predicament

      • me three

    • i'm in similar position with a SFF PC and 5 HDDs… i'm considering JBOD 5 bay enclosures but unsure of overall reliability and spin up/sleep nusances for a plex server…

      • I have been using a laptop and external drives for years now for my Emby server. Until recently i was using an 8TB WD drive for the server library and a portable drive for usenet stuff.

Recently i bought a 4 bay JBOD enclosure and expanded the library to 28TB. The only real annoyance is it might take 15-30 seconds for the drive to wake sometimes.

    • I have been wanting all SSD servers for years, and apart from my PBS server I'm finally there.

I've got about 4TB usable only and it's enough now.

I offload all media storage to idrive via rclone with a generous (400gb) cache on the ssds.

I have a second PBS server hosted with servarica for sweet FA with 2TB of storage which is plenty after compression and skipping various cache drives for a few different things.

Worth a look into, honestly for the cost of the 10TB plan it was hardly worth me replacing failing hard disks. This way if something shits itself I just grab another server, connect to my PBS server via tailscale (on the host) and pull all my backups.

Or in a pinch I could just pay someone for a server, I figure by the time this hardware shits itself it'll be viable to just grab a server somewhere.

Check out KS-A here, once available I'm grabbing 1 or 2 and going serverless.

  • Would this be a good PC to chuck behind a TV, and use as a streaming device for GeForce now or would is struggle to push 144hz through to tv?

    • +1

      It's only HDMI 1.4, so 120hz at 1080p.

Personally I'd go with a proper streaming box, it'll use less power as well.

Intel kept the same basic GPU from 7th to 10th generation, 11th it starts to become somewhat useful.

I would think so. I have a Dell Micro with 8500t and UHD630 and it decodes 4k60hz in 1-2ms for Nvidia Gamestream (now moonlight/sunshine). More versatile than streaming sticks for gaming too. Only reason against one is windows is more annoying to get straight into watching/gaming than a streaming ui with a remote.

Bugger looks like the CPU i3–10100 Lacks hardware acceleration for AV1 decoding.

    • +5

Yep, as far as Intel CPUs go, you'll only get hardware AV1 decode on an 11th gen or newer chip (UHD 700 graphics or newer).

    Can this run Minecraft

  • Our shop has a really old computer. I want to update to this one. Can this use as a comptuer?
The old one is still ok to use and brand is Lenovo Thinkcenter.

Current desktop is windows 7 system.

    CPU i5 660 @3.33HZ
    RMA 4GB
    500GB
    NO WIFI

Except the storage, this one is much better.

This is a perfect little computer for just being a PC, it’ll be much faster than your current one. Comes with windows 11 preinstalled. I only use it as a server as it’s perfect size to have multiple.

      • Thanks for your reply. How about the product quality? I mean is it reliable compare to thinkcenter?
        Thanks again for your reply.

Lots of people anecdotally bag Acer on build quality (esp on laptops), but as someone whose worked as a tech for decades I've only ever seen people who are unusually rough on tech have major issues with them.
This seems a bit amusing to me as I've sat on my nitro 5 multiple times and am quite clumsy… and it's fine. Am the sort to try not to scratch it or intentionally chuck it about though ( and those are the things I suspect people who have issues do - fail to take intentional care where they can).
Anecdotal "Acer is bad mmk" people seem to apply this notebook "evidence" of crap build quality over to other product lines… and I see no call for that either.
Tech sites for the most part have no major issues with Acer. And their "bang for buck" is fantastic.
Especially as this has windows 11 license and all, this'll look after you for years.

(I've still got 20 year old Acer screens that work fine. And haven't even been stored kindly between uses etc)

@captain womble: I agrew, nothing particularly bad about Acer, they do make decent stuff at good value. Disclaimer I have an Acer Veriton SFF (with a 4th gen Intel CPU) so that's at least 9 years old and it's still working…I ordered one of this to replace it.

Not sure what to do with the current one that has been stable as f. NAS server maybe. So my experience has been great with Acer.

  • Nice. The CPU seems to be faster or on par with i5-9500T that comes with the typical micro PC deals.
Is the storage SATA or m.2?

  • Tried to pay with debit card twice and despite entering the correct OTP code the card response was card expired. Pretty sure both times I entered the correct future MM/YY.

Something could be broken with the cart.

    Chose Direct Deposit instead.

  • Hello dose anyone know if this is sata or nvme ssd and if the stand is included thanks

  • @TomJerry - how do you plan to add HDD storage? i'm in similar position with a SFF PC and 5 HDDs… i'm considering JBOD 5 bay enclosures but unsure of overall reliability and spin up/sleep nusances for a plex server…

    • I’ve got a NAS that houses all my HDDs, the SFF PCs just mount the drives over the network. These only have gigabit Ethernet, but you can get 2.5gbe usb adapters (although I’ve never used one, so can’t say how good they are)

  • Have one from a previous deal. While it wouldn't be a dealbreaker for me the Windows install starting showing up as unlicenced after about a week. Didn't matter to me as I was planning to turn into a linux server.

Oh and the CMOS battery was under the CPU heatsink so basically its a removal and repaste if you get a dodgy battery as I did.

  • Got mine just now.

Some additional info on the config.

Unit is good, clean, aside from a single scratch about 5cm long on the under side of case.

SSD is a Samsung 860 EVO. Great. Only 646 power on counts Great. But 20,000 hours on time. MTBF is 1.5 million hrs so, great.

Unit came with a 2nd DP out in the optional port. So capable (I guess) of running 3 monitors. (2 DP+1HDMI)

    2x SODIMM 8GB, whew.

Fan and heatsinks looks prestine. I would say basically new!

Thermal paste looks new (not dried out).

    No stand.

A+ overall if I had to rate it.

Looks very clean and new except the on-hours for the SSD 20,000hrs (swapped in 2nd hand I guess) + single scratch on under side.

    Very very happy.

    Thanks Op and Metrocom

    • Any guesses on will Windows start up ok if I directly swapped the SSD from an old Veriton with gen 4 series CPU and stuck it in here? ;)

  • Anyone know what the power LED light up in red with a pattern 3 short 2 long mean?
