There is a local and internet based interface

    • +2

      wrong

    • That's not true. There is a web interface or app for this device. Whilst I dont have this device, I wouldn't have scaled up my unifi network without a web interface.

    • +2

Wrong. It’s got a unifi controller web interface built in

    • -7

Can one of you guys shed some light on this/point me in the right direction, i cant find any web interface for my u6 lite access point… happy to learn more

Sorry I was talking about my access point, maybe I didn't make that clear?

      • +5

unifi controller is your webui?? you can run in docker / VM / rasp pi if you don't want to buy a device that runs it.

        • Thanks for actually answering the question, I've never looked into it but sounds interesting, will add a vm and see how it goes.

          • +2

            @wisc: If you're using Proxmox there's a script here: https://tteck.github.io/Proxmox/ - search for 'unifi'

            • @bdl: Thanks my main server is vmware, and i run a test xcp-ng cluster on some pcs as i wanted to test clustering, live migration etc

I really should set up a proxmox lab though… i get its a bare metal hypervisor, but it feels like a level 2 because of the underlying os, so never got around to it… it does seem to be widley used and fantastically supported though.

        • Gave up on self hosted controller from a pi4, then proxmox, for the simplicity of this solution.

          • @tm32: Was it straightforward to migrate from the controller to this? Looking to upgrade my USG3 but don't really want to recreate my entire network.

            • @BaryGusey: @BaryGusey

Looking to upgrade my USG3 but don't really want to recreate my entire network.

Buy the UXG Lite for $149 - it's the direct replacement for the USG3, and it just slots right into your existing Unifi controller.

              https://cplonline.com.au/ubiquiti-uxg-lite-unifi-gateway-lit…

It's fast enough to do full 1Gb routing with all the extras enabled, unlike the USG3…

    • Ubiquiti has a full UI and complete web based interface. This device the UCG Ultra comes with a local controller running on it for the OS and I much rather prefer the web interface for all of the management. I hardly use the app for device management.

However, I do use my app for reviewing security camera footage using the Unifi Protect (Which is also a locally run app on a server).

  • I run the software on Kubernetes cluster which is then accessible via the iPhone or iPad app or alternatively, via a browser, so first statement is wrong.

  • +2

This model (and the rest) has a web interface for the control and network/other services, infact you don't even need to use the app for initial setup if you plug in a cable lan side and open the default gateway ip into a web interface

  • +7

This unit is great, no need for a cloud key as it has unifi OS and controller built in.
    Fast performance too

  • +3

I recently bought the Max version.

One tip: if your Internet is PPPoE (needs a username/password to authenticate), make sure you have an ethernet cable (and if necessary, a USB adapter for it) handy to directly jack into it so you can set it up via the web UI. The Cloud Gateway units require an Internet connection to set up via the app.

    • +3

If I remember correctly, you can complete the initial setup of the gateway using the iOS / Android app (works over bluetooth), so you can set those PPPoE settings

      • +1

They STILL haven't fixed this issue? I recall about 4-5 years ago discovering that if your ISP used a VLAN setting, that you had to use an ethernet cable because the app didn't have VLAN options during setup and you can't do anything else until it's connected to the internet directly (not through an external modem, because the DHCP settings aren't accessible until after setup either).

      • No unfortunately not.

I was initially planning on setting it up that way. So you can add the Gateway manually via bluetooth, but because there's no Internet, the setup couldn't complete therefore you can't even see the PPPoE settings.

  • I’ve got with my U7 pro and can highly recommend it.

    • Same here, but I've had my U7 Pro going "offline" while still providing service, you had the same? Unifi forums have a fair few threads on the issue.

      • I don’t check the UI very often, but I haven’t seen the AP Offline when I’m in there. Everything up to date?

        • Yeah all devices on latest firmware. You would see if the AP is offline as it will give you a large "Device offline" notification at the top inside the app. You can see all the system logs at the top right with the "Clipboard" in the Unifi app.

          • @oodLes: Doesn’t look like my AP is going down. Only thing I can think of is maybe your AP isn’t getting enough power?

  • I always get confused with the Ubiquiti stuff. Is this like a budget version of the UDM?

    • +1

Yes. I believe it is the UDM without the additional protect, access, protect etc for Security Cameras etc. However, also has less management for Ubiquiti Devices (max 30) and max 300 clients.

So its more of the home user that only wants the Ubiquiti Network for a few devices.

I have a UDM and have 10 Devices with 55 clients and don't use the other stuff. But I like that the UDM can be mounted in a rack and has 8 ports. I use all 8 plus another Mini Flex 5 just in the house.

      • Thanks. I have a UDM in the office with only two wireless APs and it works quite well. Sounds like you might have the UDM Pro if it's rackmounted? Mine is the little cylinder thing.

        • Yeah, sorry I do have the UDM Pro.

I love the topology that is available and the remote monitoring.

Thinking about getting this unit for my Mobile Starlink configuration.

  • for home I'm running one of these and a Unifi Express to do the wifi, with a few other unifi u6's over mesh/poe
If you are on less than gigabit NBN this will be fine for IPS/IDS.
Its been a great upgrade from the U3P/cloud key.

    • Mine is struggling to get the full gigabit connection with IPS/IDS, highest level blocking, geoblocking, QoS (whatever ubiquiti call it). Will get the max as soon as it drops below $300.

    • Wait does this unit not support wifi itself?

      • +1

The Ubiquiti Cloud Gateway Ultra doesn't have built-in Wi-Fi and you need to purchase a separate access point for Wi-Fi.

The Ubiquiti UniFi Express has built-in Wi-Fi.

        • +3

Just note the UniFi Express as a router is quite limited in features in comparison to the UCG Ultra or the UCG Max.

I got an Express for my parents place and whilst it works fine for their basic usage, it doesnt have IPS/IDS or built in speed testing.

  • Would get this if it supported Protect. I have just about had it with my Google Nest cameras and looking for something that doesn’t need a subscription, and isn’t reliant on Google.

  • I'll wait for an upgraded proper 2.5Gbps model before upgrading my trusty USG-3P

    • +1

Lookup the Ubiquiti Cloud Gateway Max.

      • Oh cheers, didn't know this existed already, looks like proper 2.5Gbit indeed
That said at its current price I don't mind to keep waiting a bit longer hehe, after all my next upgrade would involve at least a U7 Pro, a gateway and a 2.5gig POE+ switch.

Might be a weird question but can you keep your existing controller or are you forced to use whatever's running on the Cloud Gateway?

  • We're running the controller on an old hp server here, works but I do worry about it failing one day. was thinking of migrating it to a virtual on a newer hyper v server. Would getting something like this be better?

nvm, says it only does upto 300 clients, no good for us then.

  • https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/256563567503 168.29 with Coupon KICKP10 with Ebay Plus at Wireless 1.

  • Just a heads up a new version of this is recently released called cloud gateway max, that has 2.5GBE. Perhaps why this one is on promo

    • +3

Not everyone has the need for 2.5GBE though specially on a home network setup. This one is good with 1GBps ids/ips

    • Not a new version, but different options aimed at slightly different audiences. My boss got the light version, I waited & got this one, while I know others want the Max.

      • +1 . The Max is not a new version, just a different model. The UniFi Ultra series is their budget-friendly lineup of products released this year. So far, it includes this UCG-Ultra gateway, the USW-Ultra switch, the UK-Ultra access point, and the UA-Ultra access reader. I'm sure more products will follow. They also offer a "Lite" lineup below the Ultra, with the "Max", "Pro", and "Enterprise" series above it.

  • -1

What's with the surcharge? They want us to pay cash so they can dodge the tax man?

    • +1

Many online computer retailers do it because of the % fees. Depending on the value, I will do a bank transfer instead to avoid the fee or find another supplier.

It isn't new, been happening for years.

  • +1

I picked one of these up a few months ago and love it. Adopted my existing AP pro and ditched the ISP supplied router.

This unit recognised the NBN connection and was up and running in a few moments. Locking down apps at certain times works a treat. The kids never knew what hit them! hahaha

  • I’ve been using one of these with a couple of U7 Pros. It’s a solid option if you’re ok with a 1Gb network; otherwise, check out the UCG Max. The usual price is $199 at least that is what I paid a few months ago when the demand was high and this was hard to buy. So $185 is not a fantastic deal, but cheaper is always better…

    • Does this serve as a modem as well? I don't see an RJ11 on it, but maybe an adapter is all I need? Would love to replace my old Technocolor+ASUS Router combo

Edit: Doesn't look it can be used as a modem

  • Should I upgrade my EdgeRouter X with this? I already have a UCKG+gen2.
