Virgin Australia Lounge Access - A Cheap Way to Access?

Hi all, got some travel coming up and was keen to know if anyone knows of a cheaper way to access the Virgin Australia Lounge?

If important I'm a domestic traveller in Sydney.

    Cheaper than what?

Cheaper than bidding for an upgrade to business class (hundreds)

do they not have single entry passes once you get there?

        • +1

          They do, at $65/pass

As @Nillionaire and @kerfuffle have already pointed out, you can purchase a single-entry pass for $65, but there are some conditions:

        • You can only use this pass to access the lounge up to two hours before departure.

        • You cannot bring in any guests using the pass.

        • You may not be able to purchase a pass during peak periods or high utilisation of the lounge.

Honestly, I would never ever pay $65 of my own money for one-time entry to a Virgin Australia domestic lounge. I do not think the food, booze, tea and space (or if you go to the SYD lounge at the wrong time, the lack of space) is worth that much.

and for up to two hour…. yeah, nah!!!

i fly regularly for business, been a platinum member for a while now, most of the time ill ask randoms if they want to come into the lounge, it really makes their day.

In my opinion the lounge is not worth it in sydney & melbourne. adelaide is okay nice and new but most of the time i end up just going and buying food external to the lounge and bringing it inside.

oh prepare for disappointment when you come to perth.

The big mining companies negotiated access for everyone so it can be worse than outside.

      • Perth business (qantas) wasn’t too bad in my experience
Qantas club lounge I’ve only been in briefly

@Davo1111: Apparently(during covid) they saved our economy, and simultaneously provided the raw materials the Chinese needed to make warships and weapons, so we could justify AUKUS. Genius.

Oh BTW, have you noticed how Gina and Clive never say a word about the 'so called' overt Chinese threat to the entire western world.

      • Don't know about negotiated access. Most just fly enough to have status.

Same as if you catch a flight to Perth from Sydney or Melbourne. Half the flight comes out of the lounge.

I've always wondered if Perth would have the highest air miles per capita in the world. Both FIFO and being a long way from anywhere.

        • Don't know about negotiated access

I know for a fact RTIO have negotiated access. I was a scumbag contractor and got access in the morning. (T2 Perth)

Imagine a stranger asking you to accompany them into the forbidden VIP lounge. Doesn't it come of as a proposition?

Doesn't it come of as a proposition?

Probably only if you call it the ‘forbidden VIP lounge’

Yeah sometimes it can be a bit awkward just got to pick the right target audience, the males are always happy to accept the offer, no questions asked, females ask several questions, most will just decline, they probably think i'm trying to do some sort of scam LOL. So i usually just ask males.

Know anyone with an Amex Platinum that might want to add you as an additional card holder?

    • technically additional cards don't have it but I don't think they can tell?

      • +1

Wife is an additional card holder and definitely never had an issue (as long as card and flyer match).

        • i keep getting emails saying get an additional card an we will give you more free points, so i looked into it, but then it says its got to be a family or someone living under the same address…. well damn, there gos that options. solo for life!

      • +1

Additional cards do have it as there is no database for checking the card numbers. Therefore, access is based upon the presence of the card itself regardless of whether it’s the original card holder.

        • yeah - but let's keep this on the down low to not ruin it.

      • Nope but they've never asked whether if I was the primary card holder

  • $379 for a Lounge Membership if you’re a Virgin Business Flyer member (free to join with ABN)

  • I walked in with a group after a last minute flight delay and the whole line dispersed some towards the lounge. Pretty sure they knew we didn’t have passes. Had a 4month old at the time and it was his first flight, it was a lovely experience to be able to take him to the lounge which we would never bother with usually for a domestic flight. The funny thing is, me and my husband didn’t say anything to each other, we just saw what was happening and intuitively saw our opportunity and just strolled on in as a family. Got a nod from the person at the door and we were in. From memory it might not have even been our flight that was delayed.

So look for delayed flights and carry a cute smiley baby around maybe (pretty sure this won’t work 90% of the time)

EDIT: scratch the baby part. Was just having a look and now it states “Where children are permitted access, the children must be aged between 2 and 17 years.” Seems strange to me. My kid was so much more annoying to others aged 2-4 than they ever were as a baby. I guess it’s as you wouldn’t have paid for a ticket for them in most circumstances.

Get the Amex Platinum (the referral bonus will cancel out the annual fee). Add additional card holders as needed and you’ve got unlimited access for free!

The Amex Velocity personal credit cards have been taken down due to a pending benefits refresh so keep an eye out for that as they may offer unlimited lounge access (however unlikely) at an even lower annual fee.

Virgin Australia Lounge Access - A Cheap Way to Access?

What are you after out of the lounge visit? The Virgin lounge is overloaded these days, crap food, good coffee, and some booze on offer.

If you're going to pay $65 each, just spend that out in the airport on a meal and some drinks.

    • "What are you after out of the lounge visit? "

Clearly there's a hot waiter / waitress working there.

Clearly not been before then!! They are far from hot.

Depending on how often you will use it, look at the HSBC Star Alliance card. Choosing Air Canada or Singapore Air for your Gold status will also give you access to the Virgin lounges when flying inc a guest.

  • honestly, the food and drinks in these lunges aint worth it if you have to buy a one off access. but if you sign up to like a amex credit card you could get get a deal thats like 80000 velocity points, 2 lounge passes and a return flight to any city, but it does come with a yearly fee of around $300 so you do kinda pay for those flights. take a look at that if you want some easy free points otherwise dont waste money on a one off pass. it aint that good, like i said food and drinks are a hit or miss depending on the time of day, and 9 times out of 10 the lounge is packed with tradies flying around for work so its always packed and hard to find a spot to sit and chill. and when its full its loud.

There is no cheap way to get in, unless a platinum or gold member invites you in.
Best to pay the single pass or bid for business class, which can be very cheap on certain routes at different times of the day, such as MEL-SYD.

  • Buy a (Sir) Richard Branson mask, and practise being awkward and giggly.

  • What is so exciting about these lounges that people would pay 65bux for hour or 3 that you cant get elsewhere in the airport

    • Social media glory, via FIGJAM bragging rights?

  • virgin lounges make the qantas club look like a homeless shelter with their DIY toasties on never ending repeat

  • HSBC Star Alliance credit card. $0 annual fee first year. Spend $4000 on the card within 90 days and you'll get Star Alliance gold. Link it with Krisflyer, MileagePlus or Aeroplan and you'll get access to the Velocity lounges.
