28 Degrees Card Alternative - but with an in-App OTP

I have a 28 Degrees card which I am considering cancelling as they have introduced a monthly fee.

I would like to replace the card with a credit card that offers an in-app OTP. I travel overseas often and I like that 28 degrees has an option to send an OTP to their mobile app (instead of an SMS) when I make a purchase.

Does any credit card often this?

The other thing I would like is complimentary travel insurance (this is a bonus which I'd love!).

I know some people have gone with Bendigo Bank, but I don't know if they offer either of both of these features. I also heard that Wise or Revolut use the interbank rate, which means the exchange rate might be a bit higher but I am not sure if this is true.

I want to ask if any cards offer an in-app OTP and complimentary travel insurance and a very low monthly/annual fee.

    Bendigo doesn't

If you needed an international debit back up the Macquarie 2FA is done in app via their own separate authenticator app

If you really need in app OTP then the $8/mth may be worth it to you. I don't worry too much because my telco can receive SMS while roaming without a roaming pack so I can still receive tokens.

Looks like latitude is bribing new applicants with $200 to try and sign up with their card, lol

  • Bendigo Bank solves this problem by not needing 2FA for Internet Banking, They also offer travel insurance and 0% International Transaction Fee.

Why is this important? Incoming SMS is usually free even with prepaid services.

The issue is I don't receive SMS in many countries I travel to.

        Why not?

    • SMS is not secure.

        Congratulations!
        You've won a $1,000

    • Sometimes I make purchases and the credit card sends me a OTP to verify it was me who made the purchase.

I cannot verify the purchase if I am overseas and I don't receive the SMS.

Do you know if it is possible to request that Bendigo Bank not send OTP via SMS as I would like to disable this function if possible?

Bendigo Bank, but I don't know if they offer either of both of these features.

Why not call them and ask ?

  • I also heard that Wise or Revolut use the interbank rate, which means the exchange rate might be a bit higher but I am not sure if this is true.

No it means they give you the Mastercard or Visa rate, which is basically what you'll see when you google.
It's pretty much the best rate you can get. Other banks and cards will add fees and exchange rates on top of this, but Wise and Revolut give you the baseline rate with no fee or commissions.

I have been using Bankwest Zero Platinum for many years, with no international fees. But they've just removed the travel insurance perk so I'll probably move to Bendigo.

    in-app OTP

Citibank used to do this. Most annoying feature in the world.
Just spend up overseas without some stupid 2FA code on every purchase, and dispute any dodgy charges when you return. Security and liability is one of the features of credit cards.

But in that vein, a handy feature might be mobile notifications with each purchase. At least you'll know when the card has been used unexpectedly.

And of course, Revolut lets you create many credit cards within a few seconds, letting you use different cards for different purchases. If one is compromised, simply kill it and create another.

  • As many others have said, Bendigo Ready is the credit card you want.

The app has biometric verification and I see on their website they've reinstated the Symantec VIP security token app for use too.

Note that there is a huge backlog of applications with Bendigo atm due to so many people jumping ship from 28 degrees. I put in an application at the end of last month and it still hasn't been processed… I just get an SMS every week saying I've progressed in the queue.

Why are people jumping ship from 28 degrees?
