Don't bother.go hard 5D or go home.
Most, if not all, users are clueless and can take better pictures with a phone than a real camera.
^^ yup dont buy 1xxxD series. Get yourself a 5Dmark3 or 4 secondhand, learn how to use it.
otherwise go for mirrorless - resell value also good!!
Twice the weight, 3 times the price.
1500D is under 500 grams which matters when you're walking around with camera.
My first DSLR was a 1000D back in the day. These days I don't think I'd recommend a DSLR to most people unless they had a specific need for a camera bag of lenses. The Vlogging market has lead to some truly awesome mirrorless cameras that are a lot more convenient to use. As they say, the best camera is the one you have on you. My 7D has been collecting dust for years even though it takes objectively better photos than my phone, it's not worth the hassle most of the time
Mirrorless with view finder isn't cheap …. bought a canon r10 with 18-45 lens and it was double this price of this 1500D deal and R10 is an entry level in canon mirrorless. If going mirrorless need view finder for the sunny days when back screen can't be viewed.
My first DSLR was a canon D60 :)
Thats Nikon. I used to own one too. Lol
Unless they meant 60d
My first DSLR was a canon D60, then 300D, nikon D40, canon 40D, 7D, 6D, Sony nex 3, rx100iii, canon m100
These are great if you are just starting off. Cheap EF/EF-S lenses , battery lasts a quiet long on 1 charge.
But there will be a lot of shortcomings for example Auto focus points.
Mirrorless cameras generally have more AF points and superior video capability as well.
Watch a few videos and make a decision what do you like the most.
Any decent smartphone released in the last 3 years could probably do better than this piece of crap. Probably more fun too.
That's a bit harsh. A smartphone won't come close in terms of measures of image quality. A smartphone will win on ease of use and digital processing.
Disagree. You'd need a better lens to improve on a good smart phone camera. Some smart phones can shoot RAW, and some can shoot in high resolution (single shot without excessive processing, or multi-shot HDR). This camera would require a bit of time in front of the computer working on the RAW file to achieve the same dynamic range as a decent smart phone camera. Even then, likely it will not, unless you are doing complicated bracketing with a tripod.
Smartphones looks an absolute mess when you pixel peep. Even my 1st generation Nikon D70 6MP camera with its kit lense can beat that
This is what people were saying 10 years go. Times have changed. I recommend experimenting with what can be done nowadays.
@ForkSnorter: Sure they have changed. But what @Thrawn said is correct. I suggest you experiment, or just look at folks who have. Phone sensors are a scam to real image quality compared to proper cameras.
Tony Northrup video from 10 days ago
@Flyerone: I know this is not a photo comparison, but it gives you an idea what "proper cameras" are up against nowadays:
Shot On iPhone 15 Pro Max by Me. No gimbal, no extra lens, no filter
By the way, this guy doesn't work for Apple. He just reviews and evaluates tech.
@ForkSnorter: Phone camera certainly improved over the last 10 years, so does digital cameras.
To be honest my budget Nikon DSLR from 2006 with 6MP still shoots better portrait than a 3 years old phone, this Canon probably does better than my Nikon. On the other hand, if you are shooting travel photo wanting a flat image (almost everything near to far in focus), grab a phone instead, best if have good light.
Coming back to this deal, not sure it is a good idea to spend this kind of money on a DSLR several generations behind. Maybe can consider used? Anyway, carefully consider what you want to capture/create and get the right tool.
I agree. At present, most of the mobile phone cameras can't beat DSLR camera quality, hopefully it may change in the next few years as technology develops more and more.
Smart phones are about convenience and taking the effort out of taking good photos so they rely heavily on software processing rather than optics. HDR on smart phones is mostly software trickery rather than true exposure stacking. A smartphone camera with a 1/ 2/3" sensor can never replicate the fidelity or the low light performance of an APS-C sensor that's 4-5x the size. That's just the laws of physics at play.
Try zooming in on a 48MP photo from a phone vs. a 24MP image from a basic DSLR (provided you get the focusing etc. right) and you'll see a very noticeable difference. It might not make a difference if all you're doing is viewing photos on a phone screen, but for almost any other use case, DSLR or larger sensor cameras will always yield better results (even on fully automatic mode).
Phone probably have better chance to beat 6MP or maybe 12MP DSLR, depending on what type of photo you wish to compare.
By the way, recently shot a few videos at school event and shared with parents, people were asking why my videos were so much better than others, guess I might had unfair advantage with FF mirrorless and good lens…
great starter if you want to get into the hobby. just remember it will be a money pit. you will upgrade your lenses, then your body eventually. also remember you have to lug this around when you want to use it.
i have an iPhone 15 pro max, and waiting to get my iPhone 16 pro max. i take most of my pictures with my phone as it has come a long way from where it use to be. plus its super convenient and always with me.
i don't use my dslr nearly as much as i use to unless i am specifically doing certain shots like portraits with a 50mm, action shots, and distance shots. i then prefer to bring out the big boy.
i have a 1dxm2 with L-series lenses. i love taking action shots and hearing my machine gun go off, lol.
Few Canon cameras on sale on Amazon, the R100 is advertised at $736 whilst at JB - $969

Would that be the better buy in this price point?
I was looking for an affordable camera to create content for a website and social so may not need the bells and whistles but re-sell value may be better with the mirrorless and 4K video of this?
For someone that wants to get into photography as a hobby then mirrorless is great for one reason - you can pick up nice old manual canon fd prime lenses (other brands will work too) off ebay for $50-$100 and use a cheap adapter to fit them to most mirrorless brands - I did this with a sony e-mount camera and learned a lot. I have a lovely Canon fd 200mm F2.8 prime lens that is older than me and still takes decent photos (though it is kind of limited in usefulness).
The Canon mirrorless cameras should also be able to use any Canon EF lens with an adapter, and again you'll find some bargains on ebay.
Those older lenses aren't as good as the more recent Canon mirrorless or Sony E-mount GM lenses, but it makes the hobby a bit less of a money pit, especially for lenses that you'll only rarely use.
I guess if you absolutely positively need to go canon and traditional slr format it’s an acceptable price. Could be worse.
Amazon camel history for last 12 months shows it’s been cheaper quite regularly and hovers more like around 699 as an ‘everyday’ price as in indicator if you got a good deal or no (prob because they are just forever price matching a camera shop - which in this instance is prob George’s)
