Smart Switches in Apartment without Breaking The Bank

One week into investigating the project - I want to add smart switches to the home and know that we don't have a neutral wire at most switch points. Has anyone had any experience with this situation? Running assumption is that maybe zigbee relays inside ceiling fixtures.
Getting an electrician to bring a neutral wire by opening up the walls will certainly be expensive, and at that point, I may abandon the project altogether.
Any good non-neutral switches available here? My experience with non-neutral switches overseas a few years back hasn't been great (dim glow, laggy etc)
Curious to hear what others here have been able to do!

Are they using the same circuit as your lights ?

Shelly makes a line of relays that I believe have the required approval for use in Australia (subject to installation by electrician of course). The Shelly 1L doesn't require a neutral wire. These are wifi, not zigbee.
I like zigbee for being a mesh network, but I would be worried about using cheap aliexpress zigbee relays (of which there are many) inside the walls. There may well be proper branded zigbee products with all the certificates but I'm only familiar with the Shelly products.
    Good luck with your project!

Consider that smart lighting facilitates a paradigm shift where lights get operated by automations, sensors and voice. I'm glad I didn't purchase switches for my lights because I neither need nor use them.

    • crazy different way to think about this. I'll take it into consideration!

Why not just use Zigbee bulbs? Dimming is a big part of smart lighting, and variable colour-temp can be nice too.
