OnePlus 5 - 3G shutdown

I've got an overseas purchased OnePlus 5 and SIM with Coles (Optus).

Applied the fix to enable VOLTE on phone but not sure it's working as there's no symbols next to the signal strength. (Although I can confirm I can access internet during a call.)

Still getting messages from Coles about the 3G shutdown and that device is affected.

Is anyone else in a similar situation?

  • Device shut down will be done based on tac code, regardless of and updates to the firmware.

That shows my grey import 5G device as not good. So not a correct checking website.

It's very likely that your device, and the OP's device, will continue to still work normally and be able to make or place calls anyway even if the AMTA website says you might have a problem with 3G shutdown.

However, Devices can have working VoLTE (4G) Calling but may not be configured in software to make emergency calls over 4G. The VoLTE connection will drop when making an Emergency Call, even with a sim card inserted. This might be problematic because there is a new legislation introduced earlier this month https://www.legislation.gov.au/F2024L01103/asmade/text/expla… that states

Subsection 6(2) directs ACMA to include requirements for providers to identify mobile phones unable to access Triple Zero, notify the user, provide assistance if necessary to access an alternative mobile phone, and cease providing service to the affected device. Providers will also be required to not provide service to a prospective customer seeking service with an affected mobile phone. This requirement makes clear the responsibility providers have to ensure mobile networks provide access to the emergency call service.

I don't know if telcos will actually abide by this rather draconian rule or whether it is going to be amended (there are lots of people with imported mobile phones in Australia), but the rule will be active in November 2024

The amendments to the Determination to be made under section 6(2) are to be determined and commence in full by 1 November 2024.

The OnePlus 5 does not have VoLTE & VoWiFi enabled from factory - you it needs a bunch of hackery to enable first, eg: https://www.reddit.com/r/oneplus/comments/1aebdxz/unlock_vol…

          • @iDroid: I'm aware of the EngineerMode workarounds, but one thing that we're not sure about is whether this setting / workaround will force the phone to use VoLTE for emergency 000 / 112 calls.

It could work for some OnePlus's but we aren't sure if it's the same across all Androids, since there are many different types of modems and chipsets (Mediatek, Exynos, Kirin, Snapdragon, Unisoc etc)

      • My suggestion is maybe try to change sim card to Vodafone or Telstra network. Vodafone has 3G shutdown already. No problem with my phone for calling and data, not sure about 000.

    • Might be also worth checking via sms:

The Government encourages Australians to text ‘3’ to ‘3498’ to visit www.3gclosure.com.au or reach out directly to their mobile service provider directly for further information and support.

I'm getting the same messages from my POCO X3 PRO/NFC phones. I'm really not sure why as they have all the Optus 4G bands….

  • That grey market OnePlus Nord N10 5G looked like a good cheap way to get into 5G way back when I bought it off Kogan. It looks like it goes out in the rubbish next month. Which is a shame, because its a damn nice phone with a good Qualcomm chip set and a great camera.

I have OnePlus Nord CE3 Lite 5G that I bought online last year from Melbourne warehouse through Kogan website. I have:
    Vodafone sim card
    Boost Mobile (Telstra)
Amaysim (Optus), now can only receive call/sms (didn't recharge), put it in an old phone for receiving call test.

Both Vodafone and Boost Mobile don't give warning when calling other numbers, but Amaysim gives warning about 3G shutdown when calling other numbers from my OnePlus phone.

After sending sms, type 3 to 3498:
    Boost Mobile:
"We were unable to confirm if the device in use for this service number will be supported from 28 October 2024, including emergency 000 calling. Check your device manual or contact the manufacturer to see if your handset is compatible. Please contact your service provider if you require further support."

    Vodafone:
"Thanks for using our 3G device checker. Our records as at 05 Aug 2024 indicate the device in use for your service was CPH2465." (CPH2465 is the phone model for OnePlus Nord CE3 Lite 5G)
"It is time to act. Your mobile phone is currently impacted and may either not be compatible with our 4G/5G network or able to make emergency 000 calls on any 4G/5G network. Please contact us for further information. NOTE: Unless your call is for a legitimate emergency, DO NOT call Triple Zero (000) to test your device."

    Amaysim (Optus):
"Hi there, our records show that as at 09/08/2024, you're using this device: ONEPLUS NORD CE 3 LITE with service number +614xxxxxxxx."
"We've determined that this device will not be impacted when the Optus 3G network is switched off from 28 October 2024. You won't need to do anything. However, we strongly recommend that you regularly update the software on your device for optimal network performance."

Just like you, I have got a OnePlus 5, bought overseas. I am with Vodafone. After Vodafone shut down their 3G network, I couldn't make or receive mobile calls. Of course, all the social media over WiFi weren't affected. I simply moved on to a cheap Motorola.

  • OnePlus 7T Pro McLaren user on Voda and sfsg 🤞

So i keep saying nice things to my device each day 😂 whilst praying to the universe it keeps on kicking

  • Latest update.

One the 29th October, no signal bars on my Coles SIM.
Message on the phone read Coles - Emergency Calls Only.

I made one last try to get my phone set up for VOLTE.

This time I downloaded a different MBN to the one in the instructions to see if it would work.

It did and suddenly I had the VOLTE symbol next to my Signal bars but noticed:
    - no signal bars
    - still saying Coles Emergency calls only
    - Phone clock had changed to UK time
    - Was able to make calls

I decided to change back and install the correct Optus MBN, so now,
    - VOLTE symbol gone
    - Signal bars have returned
    - Pulling down the top screen now shows Coles - Telstra
    - Phone clock back to normal
    - Still able to make calls

I have no idea what voodoo is going on but it's working and I'm just looking for a decent price on a OnePlus 12 just in case.

    • I too have a Oneplus 5. Can you post what set of instructions and source of MBN files you have used?
