Apple iMac 24" M1 8-Core CPU, 7-Core GPU, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD $999.97 (RRP $1999) Delivered @ Costco

900

Like a bit of a mirror of this unsatisfying deal (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/850850) it looks like Costco is clearing their iMacs out at a cheap price.

Is it a current RRP? Or it was released many years ago?

    • +4

current macs have M3 cpu i think, so this must be from 2021 lineup

    • +1

      It was released April 2021.

  • +4

I think youd buy this mainly for the display which is usually top quality

    • +1

      But there is no input?

    • +1

yeah, would be a better deal if they'd remove all the computer parts and just put an hdmi port in there hehe

      • +2

The older imacs actually has an input you can use as a regular monitor, every generation seems to be going backwards for connectivity

        • Found a 27inch one on the side of the road as hard rubbish last week.
Finally turned it on yesterday and it loads half way and turns off.
I might try and see if i can at least use it as a monitor because i didnt even think of that.

        • that feature powered the entire system to allow the display as external

    • +10

My wife had one I can vouch for the quality of the display but 24” is just a little small these days. Bring back the 27”!

      • -5

They have - Studio Display 27.

      • +1

Yea, age is also playing an important role!

  • +2

Good deal even considering it has only 8GB. the LCD alone would be worth near this price.

    • -3

Is it possible to take out the computing part and put it in a case so it functions as a mac mini, and have the monitor operate separately for display purposes only?

      • +2

        Why bother, honestly lol.

    • +8

24" LCD for $1000 in 2024 worth???? You can get 4K/3440x1440p OLEDs for less now…..

      • -1

This is 4.5k though, and even it is 4k not all are created equal. Did you check the price of 5k monitors regardless of brands?

        • LG C4 42" for $1500 or on sale for ~ $1270 https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/867498

          • -4

@lovebargain87: Still 4k. closest model with LG would be the UltraFine series.

            https://www.wireless1.com.au/lg-27md5kl-b-27in-5k-ips-monito…

4k on 42" is not that impressive tbh.

            • -3

@OzHan: No one cares about a 24 inch 5K monitor

              • @sallan75: I mean, clearly there’s a niche for this since these products exist. Most people don't and shouldn’t care

              • +2

@sallan75: Lol, until you've used one.

Mac screens are glorious. I just moved from a 27" iMac retina to a mac mini and got a Dell ultra (allegedly) sharp (allegedly) somethingerather that was ozbargains "favourite monitor" for it. The thing may as well be a CRT compared to my old iMac.

                • -5

@nzcoops: Yeah I bet you can't stop looking at the logo. People need to lay off the Apple koolaid

                  • @sallan75: Fair enough.
On the other hand, seems you can't get enough of the Hatorade!

                    • -3

@nzcoops: Mate I have an iPhone and multiple iPads. I come across Apple products all the time due to my job. I don't hate Apple, their products are decent. But people are paying a premium, so they should be good. I have known many people who had a $500 laptop, then pay 4 times or more for a Mac and start acting like they are comparing similar products.

                      • -1

@sallan75: That's cool, it's now clear you don't have sufficient experience to truly comment here. You can't compare a phone and iPad, and randomly seeing macs at work, to using a 27" retina for 8h a day for months or years on end.

Try it as your daily driver for a solid few months, and then switch to a more expensive Dell monitor with credentials as long as your arm, and I guarantee you'll think it's buffering the whole time.

                    • @nzcoops: As Major Payne would say, Apple fans are 'Sensitive'.

                • @nzcoops: Similar experience, even my new M series MacBook Pro 14” connected to a pro dell 4K screen after swapping from an Intel 5k iMac and the difference is night and day. Say what you want about Apple but their 5k iMac screens are amazing

  • -4

10th gen i5 is only 6 core. Why does the description say 8 core?

  • Good price but not sure about the 8GB RAM. Even my iPhone has 8GB and other mobile phones like samsung etc have even more. My laptop has 16 and it struggles a lot when I have too many docs and webpages open , it is pc and I know MacOS with M1 does better utilisation etc. but still low.

    • Even the base model iMac is M3 now. This is way out of date unless you are only doing low level computing tasks.

      • is the 8Gb upgradeable?

        • +3

not easily.. Think I seen videos where people de solder and re solder on board.
          Which is beyond most people

My current 2017 iMac still works well with a external SSD for speed upgrade and I put 24gig RAM in via DIY at the back
Really over everything soldered in place with no upgrade for failures or future.

          • @davemc: Intriguing. Could I please bother you for the DIY instructions, or a kit list?

            • +2

@JarrodRebecchie: search up rewa on youtube. Same process but instead of iphones u do it to a mac. Not really diy able unless you have a ball soldering machine and what not.

            • +2

@JarrodRebecchie: it's more a proof of concept type scenario than a realistic diy project

            • +1

@JarrodRebecchie: dosdude1 on YouTube has some great videos too upgrading soldered Mac RAM and SSDs. He's also famous for creating patches allowing newer MacOS installation on unsupported systems.

It requires specialised equipment and some firmware hacks but if you can solder SMD parts it's not impossible.

      • +1

M1 was a huge leap and is still very capable. M2 and M3 were not as large a leap in performance. This machine will run out of software updates quicker than an M3 iMac.

        • i'm willing to bet apple will pull all stops to support all the m series. they'll fall behind for new features as distinct from updates broadly

    • I had the macbook air m1 8gb, and it's enough for everyday things. Just can't open too many tabs, but otherwise it's amazing

    • I'd bet your iPhone cost more than $1k.

    • Chrome with many tabs chugs on my 64gb M1 with plenty of free memory.

      • +1

Don't use Chrome. Nobody should use Chrome. There are plenty of other far better less system resource hungry browsers that don't support Google's monopolistic behaviour. It chugs because it's collecting telemetry on you.

  • +6

As an Apple user, I can say categorically that the cost to Apple for putting in 16GB would have been maybe $10-20 extra. But the real cost to Apple is that not many people would have paid the outrageous price to upspec their machines and they would have lasted longer before needing upgrades. Same goes for SSD. I think the only time Apple changes memory/SSD size is when the manufacturers stop making such low spec memory in bulk.

MacOS is quite efficient in the way it uses memory. 8GB will be fine with fast SSDs to page data to drive, but 16GB is more freeing. My prediction is that new M4s will come with 12GB.

    • +2

I have 16GB on my M2, even then I find it a bit insufficient at times. Had to reboot the machine to free up the resources to make it feel more responsive again.

But Its still a good deal at sub $1k price.

      • -4

        rebooting is pure placebo lol

    • +6

Yes, it's called price anchoring. Apple had been known for this since Steve Jobs days, with the 16gb storage iphones

Here's Linus making a video about it recently.

      https://youtu.be/cLGcGnGJvL0?si=RoP0pUcCM7aDs3-4

  • I have 3 of these for work (one with 16gb ram). Low stress usage needs however 2 years old and still fly on everything.
I think this is a bargain.

Someone pointed out about no inputs. Can confirm these CANNOT be used as display only.

  • They selling S/H for more I be tempted although new M4 iMacs rumoured next month
It getting old tech now and 8 gig RAM is so yesterday :)

    • +1

Except the M4 iMacs would cost twice as much and It will be starting at 8GB as well.

      • Rumour 16gb will be starting point for M4..
Yes Double the price or probably more with Apple prices.

  • +1

Aside from video editing, is there any reason to get a newer m series CPU device? In a MacBook, it'll affect battery life, but isn't the m1 is enough for basically everything?

  • -2

You probably better off buying a Mac Mini and using a screen of your choice. M2 chip released in 2023 and you are not tied to an "all in one" solution (i.e no upgradability).

    $899 @ The Goodguys

    https://www.thegoodguys.com.au/apple-mac-mini-m2-256gb-ssd-m…

    • with Mac Mini you have no upgradability either. you will need to purchase keyboard, mouse, speakers, mic, webcam and cables. trust me many iMac target users don't want that.

      • -2

Of course you have upgradability. You can swap screens and all of those things you have listed without changing the most expensive component.

        • +2

The only thing you can replace is the screen. When we say upgradability, most people mean CPU, RAM, Storage.

          • @OzHan: Being able to replace the screen without needing to buy another processor (or vice versa) when one of them fails or is not fit for purpose anymore is a reasonably big deal, given they are the 2 most expensive components.

            • @atwilliams: As an iMac 27' user I can assure you the ability to replace the screen when something fails is not on top of their minds.

    • +1

If you're happy with a 24" display, you're much better off buying this.

$100 isn't going far on a monitor, keyboard and mouse.

      • $100 won't even get you a Magic mouse.

  • +1

anyone know if it comes with a mouse and keyboard, or it's just the system + power cable

update, hit expand on description section and see this:

Colour-matched Magic Mouse, with Magic Keyboard with Touch ID

  • +1

Looks like out of stock now and blue has gone up.

  • -6

    Thanks, bought 3

    • -1

      Sell on ebay for profit

      • +1

        Postage kills it. I tried.

  • +3

It’s not a bad price but keep in mind you will only have 3-4 years of software updates per Apple policy of seven years of updates.

  • Very old

  • +1

3 year old monitor, this is normal price after years deprecation value, not sure why the hype.

  • +1

when are they finally going to update the 27 inch model? because its been years and still nothing.
