As much as I hope for those prices again. I don't think we will see them again

      • +2

Yeah, that price range for XX80 series is ancient history now :(

      • I think we will. Silicon is not gold, and countries like the US and China are beginning to see domestic chip production as a national security requirement.

        • +10

Its also relevant at a time where a country, that shall not be named (Voldemort style), killed kids by exploding pagers just last week.

          • -5

@ThePasserby: Who uses pagers in 2024? lol. I remember those things from the 90s.

            • -6

@Mondorock: The country that shall not be named should poison the water supply. Or maybe one of the new biowepons that happen to be found in asian markets (apparently).

Might get a few terrerwrists if they are lucky so it's completely justified.

              • +1

@greatlamp: Imagine being such a smooth brain schmuck that you think blowing up women and children to claim land that isn't yours is justified.

                • -2

@DeToxin: Read my comment in the context it was made and who I was responding to. I shouldn't need to add a "/s" to the end of my comment to prevent people like you taking it out of context

                  • +2

@greatlamp: You do realise sarcasm is the first thing to disappear in text based language right?

And a "joke" that poorly thought through isn't funny in the first place.

I read the comment about pagers and it does nothing to make your response seem like sarcasm. You just sound like any other Isra3li supporter

                    • -2

@DeToxin: I understand this is a sensitive topic, however you are telling me these appear to be serious statements?

Or maybe one of the new biowepons that happen to be found in asian markets (apparently).

                      Might get a few terrerwrists

    • I remember my Asus RTX 3080 OC White for $1,699 when it launched here in Australia in Jan 2021. Good luck ever seeing that again for that type of card.

      • +5

Also got my FTW3 3080 for $1500 in Dec 2020. The GPU market has been obliterated by AI demand and a lack of competition from AMD, pretty sad really

        • +2

          And an overbooked TSMC.
When AI gets you the most money, of course NVIDIA will prioritise producing more AI cards than gaming GPUs.

          • +1

@FujinShu: Nvidia are making 50%+ profit on 40series, wasn't any better for us when they used Samsung for 30series.

        • +1

Ordered my FTW3 on launch day for $1259. Took 6 weeks to actually get it though.

        • Lack of competition? You could have gotten a 6950 XT for that money, which is faster in raster

      • +3

Good luck ever seeing that much in my bank account again.

        • -2

Thanks Ever Given and covid, you pricks.

This is a broadly irrelevant price, though. The 30-series was already announced (on the 1st of September 2020, the deal was from the 11th of September 2020), with availability for the 3080 just several days later on the 17th of September (though many did not get their hands on one until significantly later, but that's another issue). Also, the 2080 Super was a horrendously bad card (it was around a similar performance tier to the 1080 Ti), whereas the 4080 Super is significantly faster than the 3090 / 3090 Ti.

I'm not defending higher and higher prices, but the reality is that people keep buying just to be able to play whatever the latest game is on maximum settings, despite it sometimes hardly looking much better in real-world gaming (i.e. not screenshots and zooming in on random parts of gameplay footage). You can still get an excellent gaming experience from cards that are several generations old.

I have a 3080 in my main computer, and recently dusted off an old 1070 to build my kid a gaming PC - I tested it out and could still play the latest games, including Black Myth Wukong on Medium settings at 1440p. Does it look as great as it does when I watch gameplay footage from a 4090? Obviously not. But is it still a fantastic experience with great visuals in a really detailed and well-designed world? Obviously yes.

This is to say nothing about the fact that all of the most popular games (Fortnite, CS:GO, Warzone, Apex Legends, Valorant…etc.) are all perfectly fine to run on something similar to a 1070. You can get a great experience with a $200 GPU. You don't need to go out and spend huge amounts of money just to chase the hype.

I think the Outlaws promo may have ended yesterday?

  • +9

Granted the 5080 could be still months away, no official launch dates and "rumors" are only suggesting its being pushed to Q1/Q2 next year. Not to mention that the original launch price of the 4080 was $2,219, and it is expected to be even higher with an increased MSRP.

    • +2

Yeah but this is not enough of a price drop to deter me from the 5080. Even if 5080 is 2.1k again I'd still prefer that. if it's above 2.3k I'll stick to my 3070 a little more

      • +9

Knowing Nvidia they will try and push a 10-20% MSRP increase haha

        • At the least nvidia will push a price increase equivalent to the performance increase, that is for sure.
Maybe we will see 5070 at 4080 performance levels with a US$150 price increase for the jump in memory capacity to 16GB+.

          • +6

@reactor-au: Nvidia now can virtually increase the MSRP on the 5080 and 5090 to whatever the hell they want. There will be a performance increase sure as the 5080 is expected to outperform the 4090 but I think its going to be out of proportion.

AMD has publicly stated they will no longer compete in the high end market segment of GPUs, leaving Nvidia as the monopoly.

            • +1

@AircraftFreight: yeah its really been a shit show since the crypto boom days, now we wait for the Ryzen era of GPUs (maybe Intel will surprise us).

        • +1

Yep as AMD going AWOL at top end GPUs and per PS5 pro $$ lift, it’s all going up….

      • +4

I am guessing 5080 will be released around $2.5K and 5090 around $3.5K, so looks like you'll hang around with your 3070 a bit longer.

        • Wondering how much 9090 Ti MSRP when its launched?

        • Any guesses for a 5070?

          • @Duplicity: At least $1300, maybe $1500 if we're unlucky, and slightly faster than 4080

      • What’s your price for a 4080 S before you’d pull the trigger, outta interest? In same boat….

    • I wonder how many sold for RRP. I bought mine at release for $1800.

  • Is a 750W PSU really enough for this?

    • +4

      Yes

    • Depends on the rest of your system
Peak power of these cards is around 350w
So youd be pushing your luck with some cpus like the 7950x and 14900k (250-300w), but 7800x3Ds consume less than 100w so theyd be fine.
You could power limit your cpu too but if youre dropping $1500 on a gpu upgrade to a system with specs like that, you can probably afford a 1000w psu at that point.
In normal gaming, cpus usually consume less power so you might even be fine with a 14900k unless you load up blender and furmark at the same time or something like that, but doing that could actually trip the psu

    • +1

      I have a 4080 super and running i7 9700k with corsair rm650i psu with no issues 🙂

      • How is the 4080 Super with your i7 9700K? I have the same CPU with a 3080

        • +1

Runs well, i know the cpu is slightly a bottle neck.
I upgraded from a 1080ti so it was a big jump in performance. I did look at second hand 3080s but wasn't worth it.

  • ITX?

Seems 585mm width killed most of the cases.

  • GeForce Now

  • +13

4080 supers also available for $1499:

    Inno3d from centrecom: https://www.centrecom.com.au/inno3d-geforce-rtx-4080-super-x…
PNY from ebay (with ebay plus coupon: PLUSM17): https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/126420270755

    • +1

Which would you pick? Mind you I have to try figure out which of these will accept a decent waterblock

edit: decent Bykski block for just over $200 for the Zotac but I think I'm just gonna wait till 5000 series and see which way I want to go

  • 307mm will easily fit inside a Deepcool CH160 itx case with 3 mm or so to spare.

  • can someone with more than 2.4 braincell let me know what i should buy. im looking at 3080tis for around 700 or 3090s for anywhere under 1k. should i just go for a 40 series card around the same pricing?

    • ive got a 12900ks 64gb ddr5 system for reference.

      • What is the resolution/hz of your monitor? E.g 1440p 144hz or 1080p 60hz

        • 1440p 144hz currently but im also looking at getting a 45-49 4k ultrawide. so want to futureproof myself there also.

          • @bob98: If you value higher frame rate I’d wait for the 5000 series cards to release. This card will do 4K60 but I would stick with the 1440p 144hz for now.

          • @bob98: Hope you're not joking about running 4K at 144Hz, because with some high demanding games now e.g. Black Myth Wukong, even RTX4090 is struggling. Not sure if the upcoming RTX5090 can even achieve that result consistently.

      • If you are looking for higher VRAM options 7800XT and 4070Ti SUPER are probably the cheapest modern options for 16GB of VRAM.

  • Will it play GTA6

    • +2

No you'll need to wait for GTA7

  • +4

@maverickjohn we’re on the same SFF xx80 card journey…. Damn this is tempting - but if 5080 has 10% extra over a 4090 for probs about $1k less early next year, think I’ll still hold, if I can. See what the next month or so brings with prime day and Black Friday. If $1300 or less (doubt it though) for a 4080…. I might just bite

    • +3

Touche brother I'll do the same

      • Could buy now and get 5 mths worth of good gaming in, but my backlog to play isn’t super demanding…. Still, might get $1000 resale on it = just $100/mth? Haha

        • +2

Lol nahhh I think the 3070 is holding off ok for now and I still game on my PS5 mostly.
Once I have a decent 4k card on my PC I'll probably retire from console gaming. I already have 4 controllers for my PC as well so it will be an easy transition

  • +2

    This or 5000 series?

    • Still rocking the GTX 1070 and still asking this question..

      • I upgraded earlier this year… couldn’t wait.

Came from a 1070 to a 4080 Super and haven’t looked back. Glorious graphic details, RT and ability to play in 4K.

At the going rate would of had to wait a year for the 50 series, if I had waited.

Right now I would be 50/50 HODL if the price was right. Paid $1699 for my card.

        • Yeah I'm ok to wait a bit more and theoretically 4XXX prices should keep dropping. If not 5000 series I'll try to get a 4080 super I guess

          • @Duplicity: There's not really much room to drop, I'd be surprised if it's below $1250, 1300 when 5080 drops

      • Depends on what exactly you're looking for.

1070 still a great card capable of great visuals. I put my old 1070 in my kid's gaming PC and managed to play a lot of the latest games with the quality settings dialed down a bit. Still looks fantastic.

Obviously if you mostly play competitive games (e.g. CS:GO, Fortnite, Warzone, Apex Legends…etc.) the 1070 is still perfectly fine and you'd probably get a better experience by upgrading your monitor or peripherals first.

    • Is there a game/games you can't play right now because of hardware constraints? If not, why not wait. I'm going to buy the best midrange PC when Monster Hunter Wilds comes out because I don't meet minimum/recommended specs. But for my current games of Fallout 4, Valorant and Deadlock, I'm totally fine.

  • Been pretty disappointment by my Asus RTX4070TI 12GB purchased my $1400 12 months ago. Got screwed on the VRAM and MemoryBus. Even if I sold it now and shilled out for a 4080 I would be another $600 out of pocket

  • 16gb of vram…. all that power they they stiff you on Vram…. talk about a chock point.
