TRS Advice: Apple Receipt for iPhone 16 Pro

Hello all,

My parents are travelling tomorrow. I purchased an iPhone 16 Pro for my dad with my credit card. In the initial section, I filled in my dad's name however for billing details I put in my name as I was paying with my credit card.

Now the receipt has 2 boxes:

In the box that says "Sold to customer": under my name

In the box that says "Ship to customer": under my dad's name (matches passport)

Is this going to be an issue getting the refund?

I know not much can be done now, but wanted some sort of assurance if any.

Thank you!

your name (and only your name) as it appears in your passport if the invoice is $1,000 or more (abf.gov.au)

nope, the officer likely will deny it based on the fact there are two names - especially if it's yours under 'sold to'. Best course of action would probably be to purchase a new unit tomorrow, wherever available and returning the one you've currently got.

    • The sad thing is I could not have put anyone else's name but my name for billing section, as I was the one who paid for it.

However in the starting section, I put my dad's name (hence the "ship to customer" is under my dad's name)….

Sigh…I guess we will wait and see.

      • Granted I haven't done this with Apple, but with literally any other online retailer the billing name/address is completely inconsequential. I very frequently put the shipping address as my business location and just leave the "billing address is the same" box checked and I've never once had an issue. In fact, I just did this last week on a $1800 Lenovo laptop, so I doubt monetary value plays into whether the checks are stringent or not.

I also frequently buy things using my name but use my wife's credit card under her name. Also never been pulled up for this.

      • I usually just fill in garbage names under "name as on card" and it goes through anyway. (But because I do this I struggled to add my card to google wallet until I used my actual name… Took me a week of struggling to figure this out)

I reckon it should be your dad’s name on the invoice since he is travelling.

  • Yes, agree with above poster.

The person who is travelling must have bought the goods and must be travelling. You cannot make a TRS claim for someone else such as partner, relative or friend.

  • Damn no TRS and your dads gunna be stuck with your new phone for his whole trip too

Rules are very specific. Why didn’t your dad buy it and you pay him back ?

  • The billing name is what they are looking for. That's the person who pays for it and why GST is refundable.

Shipping or receiver name is irrelevant as that just determines who picks up. Like an agent or the receptionist.

If it’s a PDF just edit it to reflect his name and print a copy

use https://smallpdf.com/edit-pdf PDF editor, i did with OW to change the dates, had no issue bring it out, and then back in. worst you gunna get is the duty back if they find out.

  • If you purchased it, you need to be travelling to be eligible. Your dad can’t get a tax refund for tax he didn’t pay. And unlike other commenters, I suggest you don’t try and commit fraud.
