  I was using this at Bunnings and the staff insisted that their terminal doesn't accept it, even after I've told them I've used it at many merchants! Bunnings ought to train their staff better!

  Has anyone managed to use these for direct debit payments? Tried adding the card for Optus but the monthly direct debit was rejected.

    Can you make a payment directly into your account? Then it will be in credit and they will not do the next direct debit. That is how I do it with several utilities.

      It's for a gym membership and unfortunately there's no manual payment option.

    This is against the Cardholder Agreement. Under section 9, the agreement says:

    You may not make preauthorised recurring or instalment payments from your Card Account.

    This is also against Visa scheme rules. Under section 7.3.11.2 (pages 543-544), the rules say:

    Account Verification Processing – Issuer Requirements

    An Issuer must do all of the following:

    …

    • Respond with descriptive response codes to indicate:

    – 00 – Approval (when the Account has balance greater than zero)
    – 85 – No reason to decline (when the Issuer has not checked the Account balance)
    – For non-approvals, a decline code indicating the primary reason for decline
    – For a Non-Reloadable Prepaid Card, an Issuer must decline an Account Verification request for a Recurring Transaction with response code 57 (Transaction not permitted).

    The gift cards in this deal are classified by Visa as a Non-Reloadable Prepaid Card, and your attempts to set up direct debit payments for Optus and a gym membership fall under Account Verification request for a Recurring Transaction. Therefore, the gift card operator is required to reject any attempts to set up direct debit payments on these gift cards.
