  • These mini pcs look pretty handy and for the price wonder if its more convenient vs having a laptop

Don't know about you, but lugging around a monitor and full sized keyboard is pretty cumbersome

Shame these weren't available in the Lan party days though

    • I've been using an Intel N100 based mini PC (nowhere near the graphical power of this) for my main desktop replacement for well on a year now. It handles my daily email, web browsing, youtube (1440p) watching, music listening and sometimes 24/7 downloading with no hassles - silent fan (except for the few minutes it takes to check a 50GB+ download using quickpar). I have a 16GB model and I installed Windows 11 myself (because I don't trust any desktop or laptop that comes with a pre-installed O/S). The n100 would use less power in a week (being switched on 24/7) than my gaming desktop does in 2 hours.

  • I dislike the power supply with two pins as I find they dont hold firmly on powerboards. Has anyone found a solution to this? Do these units come with AU plugs or USA plugs with an AU adapter?

    • The product page says it is 19V 3.42A so you just need to find one that is the same voltage, same or higher amps, and the same barrel jack size and positive/negative location.

This random power supply from Amazon meets the voltage and amps requirements (19V 4A) but I'm not sure if the barrel jack is the same. It is centre positive.

    • grab a universal to 3 prong socket adapter, and tape it onto the power supply with some heat resistant, fireproof electrical tape. Not the most elegant method but it works.

  • my 4800U 16 gig laptop flies….so this, with 32 Gig will really do well!

    Great deal

  • Hey sorry for the silly question, but where, what are people using this for? Media station? Gaming? General computer…ing?

    • +2

I think general computer for the oldies, family, kids etc or home server.

      • Ahh awesome. Thanks!

    • sigh. what do you currently use your PC for? Well this probably does the same thing, except it can only handle 1080p low to medium settings gaming.
As I posted above I've been using an intel n100 mini PC for probably close to a year as a replacement for my gaming desktop. The mini PC handles youtube (1440p), browsing, email, music and sometimes 24/7 downloading almost silently and uses less power in a week than what my gaming desktop would in 2 hours. I still use the gaming rig when I want to play a demanding game, but most of the time I'm using the mini PC. I have a second mini PC which I have connected to the loungeroom TV and it is used for retro gaming (using the batocera O/S - easily handles upscaled 1080p PS2/Ga,ecube/WiiU) and also as a HTPC (Kodi). It can play Dolby Vision encoded files, but can only send HDR10 to my OLED TV, because no PC solution for DV decoding exists as yet (mainly due to restrictive licencing), it passes Dolby Atmos audio (well all audio actually) to my AVR to decode. I control KODI using my LG TV remove with a HDMI CEC to USB dongle I made.

Thanks for the extra detail. I'm not familiar with the tech or specs so i appreciate your real life experience.

  • for retrogaming using batocera - lots of videos on youtube, such as this one (not mine) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oDZ_jcL4RZQ

Note this is the "U" (Ultra Low Voltage) variant of the Ryzen CPU. Great if you want it for general PC use or as a mini-server but if you want to use it for gaming or something heavier I would spend the extra $$ on an H or HX.
