10 Days China Tour $888 Per Person Twin Share from Melbourne/Sydney ($550 Single Person Supplement) @ AVG Travels

321

I saw this post (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/866280) that shares a 10-day tour package to China at $888 per person. But it appears that the travel offer is strictly valid for those aged 18 and over.

I found a similiar, if not identical, tour by AVG Travels (https://avgtravels.com/au/10-day-incredible-china) is now also discounted from $999 to $888 and does not specify that the tour is restricted to those above 18-years old. In the fine print, it says "Children over 6 years. Please check with our sales team before you make a booking with your kids." This indicates it does accept kids over 6 years old.

If someone could compare the itineraries between TripADeal and AVG Travels to see what the differences are, that would be very helpful to fellow Ozbargain users.

This package includes return flights from Sydney/Melbourne. Flights from Adelaide, Brisbane and Perth attract a $400 surcharge. According to their date schedule, the $888 price is valid for tours up to Aug 2025, the price in Sep 2025 is $1199.

There are also a 12-day tour including Xi'an (Terracotta Warrior) which costs $1499, a 8-day tour costing $799, a 14-day Silk Road Tour (Xinjiang) costing $3399 and a 13-day tour combining China and Hong Kong ($2499). The China tour listing page is at https://avgtravels.com/au/china/ . I think the Silk Road Tour will be interesting.

Isn't AVG meant to be in the antivirus business?

    • +1

Yeah they test you for Covid 72 hours before departure and if you’re positive then you get quarantine.

  • +2

    Excluded

Compulsory Tipping for driver and tour guide (AU$12 per person/day). This is collected by our tour guide when you arrives in Beijing.

    wat

      • +2

Tipping is common practice on all tours FYI.

      • +4

Still way better than the U.S. tipping culture. (even for a shit service you have to pay)

      • +3

bet you have never been to china lmao

    • +4

And a few "shopping" spots per day

    • +2

Common practice in Australia as well for Chinese operated tours, $5/day for the driver and tour guide.

    • Compulsory Tipping for driver and tour guide (AU$12 per person/day).

How do you pay AUD$12? I wouldn't expect to have coins.

    • +1

Every tour I've been on in Asia has this compulsory tipping. You just need to add this to your total cost of the tour. At least it is disclosed upfront.

    Lol at $888

    • -5

Bro you are not doing the tour at Coogee lol, how much do you want to pay haha

      • +7

Pretty sure he's lolling at the whole 888 = good fortune in eastern culture, not suggesting that the price is outlandish.

      Much auspicious wow

Single person should be $444 ;)

The itinerary is almost a mix of free attractions and shopping stops where you have to listen to sales pitches.
Considering that the ticket includes checked baggage allowance, this could be a deal for international students returning home (if they live in a city along the route and are allowed to skip part of the trip).
But I guess the travel agency wouldn't want a local mixing in with the group.

    • As long as you don't get those chinese tour guide that scold you if you don't purchase

  • -4

Does this include a free EV car with every ticket?

  • +1

Went on a similar package years back (same trip minus shanghai).

All the places we were taken to were hard sales pitches that took way too long, 2 hour sit-down talk about traditional chinese medicine, 2 hour walk through some jade factory, 2 hours at some oyster pearl place.

the Golden Mask Dynasty was sweet, one of the best things i've ever seen.

Just got back from the previous deal tour and happy to answer questions. Just a few pointers that 10 day tour includes travelling within so its like 8 days.

I would also recommend it to anyone that enjoys travelling as guides have their own lines to bypass lines for most of the tourist things like forbidden palace and the great wall which is still faster than the public line. you can also duck off for the optional tours and do your own thing but you just need to make your way back to the hotel (usually via didi and its relatively cheap)

jades mostly a scam, silk is authentic but overpriced, tea is good but different from what you can get here. knockoff market is fun if you want to learn how to lowball and haggle (generally 30% of total price is where you end up) and they can take you away to some place if youre after luxury knock off and still have to ask for the good stuff.

before going to china set up both alipay and wechat. they may occasionally fail so you have to swap and sometimes they accept different merchants. also turn off sms exception or use netbank/netcode because there is no roaming to use your code to verify the purchase even if you tell the banks youre overseas.

    • I'm interested in going on the tripadeal china tour and had a couple of questions!

      1. Was the flights to/from direct? I read somewhere that some people had plenty of layovers which were tough.
      2. Did you have stay at the shopping/factory tour location or could you wait in the bus/walk around and was it high pressure sales?
      3. How long were the buses between locations?

      Thanks!

      • +1

Yep ours was direct to China but we had to do a flight from Shanghai to Beijing after arriving there which was kinda rough.

We had to stay at the place since the bus stops there. Yeah fairly high pressure in the sense that if they see you’re interested in something they’ll approach you or try to upsell you something else. If you aren’t interested they won’t approach. The knock off luxury ones will get very angry if you don’t buy so there’s an expectation that you should get something but even their high end ones aren’t worth getting. You’re better off going to guanzhou as they specialise it there and actually make oems

Somewhat long. Most trips is around the 1.5/2hr mark and they do pit stops or make extra ones if people need to go toilet. There were a few 20-30mins drive and one 3.5 getting from Shanghai to Wuxi

What was the accomodation like and how much free time did you get? I would like to be able to head out and do my own exploring of certain places and find my own food/drink in less "touristy" venues.

      • +2

They say it’s 4 stars but better to lower your expectations. One or two of them are genuinely four star experience. Others not so much but they do have nice scenery. Most of the free time is when they do optional tours. I think there’s a few at night and like one or two during the day.

I was able to get lost in the Hutong and explore it quite a lot and speak to local so definitely sometimes. You might have to compromise on sleep since the major cities are open til late. Just remember that it’s very hot and humid there. Average was about 30c with 70-80 humidity

My colleague just returned from a TripADeal holiday to China and she would recommend the tour to others. She said the hotels are stellar. They are not located within the city centres, but in the outskirsts but she took a lot of Didi trips, which are very cheap. The buffet breakfasts are good, with combinations of Chinese and western food. There are 4 shopping stops (Opal Store, Eastern Medicine, Silk Factory and Tea Shop) like what fratzhaus in the old post had described, and each stop lasted about an hour or more. She did not buy anything from those stopping stops. There are many sightseeing stops so it is not like these shopping stops take up a substantial portion of the tour. There are days when she did not join the itinerary for that day. She was told to stay in the hotel but she did not care and went out on her own. In Shanghai, there are people who went to Disneyland on their own. She did not join all the optional tours but for those that she joined, she said they are good. Overall, she definitely feels this tour is value for money. None of the travellers in her group speaks Chinese and a translation app to help with communication with the shops, hotel, will be useful.

  • i would reconsider traveling to China given the fact increasing incidents of violence to foreign visitor especially from West and Japan.

There are tons of videos on Youtube by visitors from Western countries who share their travel experience to China and they find the country an extremely safe place.

You're absolutely right, the dead Japanese kid neither got chance to complaint or post footage in Youtube. How lucky you are.

AVG pops up on my FB a week ago and I ignored it at first.
But since we do want to travel, so was starting to do my research, and then found them on Courier/SundayMail today! A good full page on 28! Who are these people?
I will read in more detail later.

As for TAD, I had looked at them in the past and here is what I think:
    - They go to everywhere around the world, but there seems to be a difference with China tours
    - Most tours have the "Arrive early" or "Leave later", but not China, maybe because it is heavily subsidised
    - The Tours are short and rushed, hundreds km a day, but you achieve more attractions that way.
    - The hotels are very good, clean, modern.
    - Usually Sydney and Melbourne doesnt have to pay Airport Surcharge. Brisbane pays between AUD$100-300 from memory.
    - They do have dedicated shopping which can be educational. Even expensive Europe Tour took us to crystal and pottery factory in the middle of nowhere for 2-hrs!
    - Personally I think TAD would suit first-timer, young/fit working people who are time-poor. For us Seniors, we prefer slow-paced longer stay.

Yeah, I did see that AVG only accepts Adults, which is good. That way they have a target market.

Had read lots of posts on FB on TAD, and nearly everyone loves it. Those who dont probably have never been. So I'll be interested to hear feedback about AVG in this thread.
