Needing to Upgrade Xiaomi Redmi Phone

I'm looking to upgrade my Xiaomi Redmi Note 9 pro phone, it's still going strong but due to the 3G shutdown, I have no choice.
I have looked at so many different Xiaomi phones, but it's all so overwhelming!

So my question is, has anyone bought any of the latest Xiaomi Redmi phones and could you please provide some feedback!
Much appreciated.

I'm not intrested in Samsung, iPhone, Oppo etc … I've been using Xiaomi phones for the last 10 years and I'm very happy with them.

It should continue to work once you activate VoLTE.

Try this. Without B28, it just means the coverage won't be the best.

I’ve been using the same phone for years too! So is it confirmed that the new Redmi Note won’t work? I thought I saw something on Reddit saying it might.

Seems to be quite a few reviews from users who have had the phone series like us and not overly impressed with the new Redmi note 13 pro. I personally don't like the in-screen fingerprint sensor (side button was way better) but they are also talking about poor battery life.

How’s your camera? I love the one on the 9 Pro.

Thinking I might skip the new Redmi this time, they’re way more expensive now and I wouldn't mind a phone without Mi bloatware for a change.

But I have yet to find a good replacement yet. But maybe this one due to the camera reviews although still pricey for my liking https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/866847 ??

    • Telco's database is on the conservative side, not for Pros.

    • The 9 Pro has been and still is the best of the Xiaomi phones that I've had. The camera is fantastic, I wish they made a 9 pro with 5G. I've been looking at the 13, 13T, 13 Pro, 13 Pro plus.

@Neoika Yes try what he has suggested, I did that myself on a Redmi Note 7 and Redmi Note 9 Pro and both now show the enabled button for Use VoLTE.

    Redmi Note 9 Pro After

    • I tried the ## … but it didn't seem to work. Although if I go into SIM card settings, preferred network type … I have 3 options.
      Prefer LTE.
      Prefer 3G.
      2G only.
I have chosen the Prefer LTE, am I to assume that's the same as what you have done?

Some format issue with my comment, another reference

        • Thank you so much. It did work. Now I sit and wait! Hopefully it'll carry me through for the next 6 months! Thanks again :)

      • Comment Updated. It should work for you now.

  • Xiaomi phones for the last 10 years and I'm very happy with them.

So just add several numbers onto your current model?

I had the 9 pro, i now have the 12 pro.

    • That's just it, there are so many different numbers and add to that, pro, plus, note, 4g, 5g, T, plus +. I feel the 9 pro has been the best so far.

    • How does the 12 pro compare to the 9 pro?

So i checked my device, i actually have the note 11 pro 5G. "VEUX G" on the list below. Every few years i just add a few digits to note x pro and find out if it's suitable.

I only buy xiaomi phones that are compatible with xiaomi eu roms. https://xiaomi.eu/community/threads/miui-14-stable-release.6…

Mediatek CPUs are not compatible. My previous phone was joyeuse (redmi note 9). Additionally i run it through a "frequency checker" to make sure the model will work for me. I think it was some 5G and almost all 4G frequencies for my sim.

Frankly, its a perfect upgrade for me.

The 3 things that immediatly stood out.

        1. screen (the jump has been like going from SD to HD movies)
        2. speed (just general games, movies etc)
        3. fast charging (with a compatible everything, the battery level is listed as 2 decimal places, and you can see it going up)

        My only gripes.

        • The camera is a huge improvement, but it always appears out of focus. I've had debates with coworkers, they believe it's operator error.
        • The front facing camera makes my forehead look even bigger.
        • I frequently face criticism for having on beautify. I believe i've turned it off, but still get heckled. I have installed the eu rom, so i dont know if it's the OS, me, or something else.

Would I buy it again? yes,

I have one of these phones, it's still going great too, I enabled the VoWifi and VoLTE and am going to roll the dice and see what happens at the end of October.

    Poco X6 pro

    • That's on the list, although that's more suited for a gamer, which I'm not.

      • Not really. I upgraded my poco F3 to this and I don't game

I would only buy a model that is currently being sold in retail stores.
Nothing else is guaranteed to work following 3G shutdown.

Even for devices that might still work following end of October 2024.
It appears that if they're not E000 compatible (and the way I read the legislation, that means able to connect to Optus,Voda and (not or) Telstra VoLTE networks), they must be kicked off the network by the carrier by 1 November 2025 at the latest.

Cause apparently no connectivity (and therefore 100% inability to make an E000 call) is a better outcome than only being able to make an E000 call on one or more networks in Australia.

    • That's interesting. A phone with no sim card can still call 000. I'm wondering then, if what you're saying, that means that the old Nokia's and brick phones won't be able to call 000 at all. I can't remember what happened when they turned CDMA off. Telstra just sent me a new phone and locked me into a new 24 month contract.

      • It's a weird scenario that we find ourselves in.
Devices that are hardware capable, but software is restricting their connectivity.
Previously it's always been a hardware incompatibility.
Yet for some reason hardware incompatibility (ie no 850MHz 3G) hasn't historically been a reason to force disconnect users from all other networks despite having the exact same impact!

    • It appears that if they're not E000 compatible (and the way I read the legislation, that means able to connect to Optus,Voda and (not or) Telstra VoLTE networks), they must be kicked off the network by the carrier by 1 November 2025 at the latest.

I'm not saying you're wrong (or right) but i think we've had this issue before with acma ticked mobiles (and the arguments i had with people on Whirlpool many years ago).

If we implement this ban, then tourists etc would have issues when they visit australia.

I understand you raising the point, but imo it's unlikely to happen.

      • Have a read of https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/865003 (excludes short term roamers).

        • Ill take my chances

          • @Davo1111: I'm recommending that if OP is spending money on an upgrade, that they should not take chances.

Different story if you're already invested.

            • @ESEMCE: Fair enough. Op has been given the citations. They can make a choice

I wonder how theyll deal with virtual numbers etc. even things like that replaceable parts phone.

My bet is that “if” they enforce this rule, someone will die and they'll revert.

  • I'm seeing reports that Optus canned service today for devices deemed E000 non-compliant…

    • Yes, read this on the other threads on OzB forums and seems quite concerning for me.

      • I am using a Xiaomi phone. 4G VoLTE capable (using force-enable VoLTE using the USSD method).
      • My phone works perfectly with VoLTE on all Optus and Vodafone MVNOs but not on Telstra (I have tried Boost).
      • My phone does not have B28 (700 MHz)

What are the chances my device will get blocked?

      • +1

        Very high.
If you are getting warning messages, then probably 100%.

        • Yes. I am prepared for it. However, imagine the thousands of customers who would not be aware of this. I know Australia carriers always have a rider that they can deny service to "unsupported devices" but it has never been enforced so aggressively ever.

We're looking at a significant number of people getting cut off from networks come October 2024. Probably the telcos are doing it in batches to gauge the actual impact. I think they may still have an idea on this total impact as they themselves send the warning texts.

  • 27 days to go! Still hanging on. I have a back up phone should the Redmi get the guillotine, and if that doesn't work, then I'll gladly go without one for a little while! Freeedom!

I'm a happy owner of the redmi 13 pro, it's my first Xiaomi but a huge upgrade from my oneplus. Fantastic phone for sub 500 AUD.

I have no problem with battery life but even if I did, the fast charge is so astonishingly quick it's never going to be an issue.

I no longer get the 3g messages btw

    • Thanks, I appreciate the feedback!

    • Where did you purchase yours from, please? And did you get a Global version? Many thanks

      • Global version from Amazon Germany, but I was travelling in Europe at the time, prices seem similar on Amazon Australia. Really great phone for the price.

        • Thanks again! I'm sold!!! I have Xiaomi for a number of years and they are a top quality phone.
