@sav11: Just get Stremio
@G-rig: I have Stremio with Torrentio and Real Debrid already.
Some niche content, particularly some Australian stuff, and some old content are not available on RD. It buffers and can be a bit slow to load. I know it's cheap but still users in other households all have to pay. Some of my users are remote and are tech luddites, they can't set Stremio up. Plex plays from all my streaming services, media and TV tuner in one place. Plex is my DVR; I can pause, rewind and fast forward free to air TV and set recordings which automatically remove the ads. Plex has a massive array of free TV channels without ads, some of them are good. Also Plexamp for music.
Although I use RD/Stremio I still prefer to maintain my own collection of content. Some of it I can't find anywhere anymore. You never know when RD may be shutdown. Some people got rid of their own content when Netflix first came here and had everything on it in one place for a reasonable price. Obviously that changed a lot and many of those people started downloading again.
I like RD and will continue to pay for it, but I won't be shutting down my Plex server any time soon. If I had to choose only one Plex would very easily be the winner for me, others prefer RD and that's fine.
It buffers and can be a bit slow to load. I know it's cheap but still users in other households all have to pay
Check the settings, there are a couple of tweaks you need to do. Also you'd probably want internet speed of 50/20 or better. With a setting changed it works brilliantly on Google TV, phone and PC. Great with all the cataloging and services. I don't think one can complain about the 5-10s to start a stream given what is doing.
Yes it's best for single device, not exactly worth setting up and paying for multiple devices (although still a lot cheaper than Netflix. Heaven forbid families may have to watch something together (not directed at you, in general). I'm sure they would for a latest release that is on at the cinemas.
@sav11: Thanks for the detail. Makes about of sense. Did you have any trouble using Synology DDNS when streaming from outside home?
I have moved from plex to streamio and real dbrid.
Same here.
The latter is and unbeatable combo. You won't need to steam old DVD and BR rips. Works very well on Google TV & phone. Still costs quite a lot to set up a Nas, those housings aren't cheap.
Not to mention power of having the nas consistently running and upkeep of failing hdd.
yeah it's just easier pluggin in a HDD (powered or portable) into the back of the telly.
Shame the Google TV don't have expandable memory or USB.
Easier just streaming these days bro.
+1 Plex is so antiquated in comparison to torrentio + stremio + real debrid. Easily worth the $4 a month.
Plex just plays media… why are you comparing it to software that downloads stuff? You can use plex with any automated downloaders.
In the end its doing the same result except streamio real debrid is easier. I no longer need to store the media. Everything is there instantly. But does cost monthly. $24 6 months.
@Jklaro: Easier then what?
Its like saying a Toyota Corolla is faster, faster then what?
@samfisher5986: Easier then plex.
@Jklaro: Plex doesn't download any content.
I think you misunderstand what it is.
@samfisher5986: Lol i know it doesnt download but plex plays the movies from the same place streamio get the movies.
I fully understand the difference but streamio is easier for playing movies that i cant get anywhere else.
In the end i use plex for movies i cant get on any streaming app now i use streamio.
@Jklaro: Plex plays movies located on your home server.
I think you don't understand.
There's also plenty of alternatives to streamio, automation etc.
@samfisher5986: Bro i been using plex up until a month ago. I stopped using it and now use streamio with real bebrid.
Ok if i want to watch avatar and i dont have it but all i have is plex and streamio.
Streamio: search avatar watch done.
Plex: go on pc go go to web page search and dl to nas. Wait 20 mins turn on plex watch done.
@Jklaro: Obviously streaming is more instant yes.. but they aren't comparable.
Plus Plex is about quality, you won't be streaming proper 4k with streamio, not even proper 1080p
@samfisher5986: Im not sure about proper but when you click what you want to watch it shows a list of torrents that you want to watch.
50GB+ files. I havnt checked but looks proper with dolby vision and atmos.
I just checked avatar and that 100GB file.
Have you even used real debrid?
@Jklaro: I was more talking about the free options with streamio
@samfisher5986: Thats what im talking about. When i select avatar it pops up with a 100GB file to stream.
@samfisher5986: @samfisher5986 You don't know what you are talking about. Stremio with torrentio has access to the same files you get on any pirating site, you don't download anything locally, it is indexed on real debrid servers and streamed from there. It has anything from 4k to the lowest quality and everything in between. Stremio WITHOUT torrentio is a completely different thing.
@sm3004: Yes but torrentio is not going to be giving you high quality files with instant streaming as its only as fast as a torrent will go.
The whole concept is silly anyway as you will still be stuck with what is currently available which might be great for the latest episodes of something but problematic for a large majority of older content.
plex plays the movies from the same place streamio get the movies.
Lol you have zero idea what you're talking about. Typical clueless stremio user.
@PainToad: Ok. I have used both and i chose to stick with streamio real debrid. Im not clueless i dl my shit from torrent site and streamio dls from torrent site. Same shit to me except i dont need to store the dl.
@Jklaro: Plex doesn't download anything from a torrent site. So it's not correct to say "plex plays the movies from the same place". Plex plays anything from anywhere.
Lots of people here don't use torrents at all. They use UseNet. Or private torrent trackers that wouldn't allow streamio use.
@PainToad: Well same place meaning avatar is a 101GB file on streamio and i have also downloaded a 100GB file that i have on my nas. The only difference is now i can turn off my nas and play the file straight from streamio rather then my nas.
@Jklaro: I tried and went back to Plex, Radarr and Sonarr make it easy.
@Jessie Ryder: Why didnt you like it?
@Jklaro: I didn't like that you had to search for what you wanted to watch every time.
There was a website where you could load playlists based on your viewing preferences, I think I had the list loaded for all Marvel movies. But it just seemed annoying, maybe it's better now or I was using it incorrectly?
Stremio unfortunately doesn't work with Apple TVs.
I know I know, Nvidia Shield or CCWGTV work, but they aren't as nice IMO.
I use RD with Radarr which isn't quite as fast but works with PlexI have Chromecast set up on multiple TV's and Stremio also works great on my Quest 3. Reason #12350978 why I do not like or use Apple products. A good friend of mine is totally locked in to Apple ecosystem and even he bought a Chromecast because Stremio is just so much more convenient than Plex. Funnily, he was the one who recommended Stremio to me.
@sm3004: I have a Chromecast which I take away with me on holidays and use for Stremio - but for now, downloading from RD is working fine for me at home.
One day I might set up the Chromecast permanetly on the TV. Who knows.Stremio is fantastic though. It's what I only dreamed of a few years ago.
You can get Stremio to work on Apple TV. It’s not easy, but possible.
If you want it free you need to sideload StreamerApp every week. If not you can pay a singing service and it will last a year.
@Diplomats: Oh I hadn't seen that. Neat thanks.
It's coming to IOS though, sideload only though I believe there's an external player workaround or you can do this
- Setup Real Debrid WebDAV in infuse
- Open browser, Setup stremio-web / debrid media manager.
- Search and download from these sites (from step 2).
- Infuse will have 2 folders (RD links, RD torrents)
- Open "RD torrents" folder and your content is ready to play.
Not as streamlined as just using the stremio app though, im excited about the apple version coming out!
@kitiara666: Yeah I had the WebDAV version setup but never really used it
My issue with stremio is that the buffering takes quite some time.
There is no profiles so I can't ensure my son will only see a list of kids stuff.Plex app is available on all smart TV usually which isn't the case for the stremio app.
If they fix this, I would say stremio is pretty solid.
Yer i hate thinking of some movie then turning on pc dl it store it then watch it once and store it forever.
I have zero buffering issues, literally any file I have ever played loads in less than 5 seconds, but I am also on a 1Gbps connection. Plex has worse buffering as in: I need to find and download the file first which takes waaaay longer than hitting play on Stremio. Keep using Plex if it suits you better, I just provided my opinion as a former 10+ year Plex user who has completely switched to Stremio+Torrentio+Real Debrid. I do not miss the days of having to manage a library and having enough storage available.
You clearly don't know about automating any of it.
Also your zero buffering is a huge lie if using torrents.
@samfisher5986: You have no clue what you're talking about yet again. You have never even used stremio yet make all these BS claims. I tested it last night on various files, it takes 6 seconds at most for any stream to start. Stick with your old crappy method, i could not care less if i tried. The fact you think I need to wait for the whole torrent to download to start watching it shows me how ignorant and clueless you are.
@sm3004: I feel bad for Samfisher, he's already clarified that Plex and Streamio+RD are in two completely different categories of use.
Plex isn't meant to be used in the manner you're suggesting.
Its the job of the server manager to already have acquired what they want to watch, as well as choosing what formats and containers they want the videos to consist of, depending on the existing client devices.
Also, from a troubleshooting perspective, the information that you've provided as a "former 10+ year user" is quite underwhelming considering the use cases applied in your tests were highly isolated towards the hardware and circumstances of yourself and not something that would be generalised.
You have no clue what you're talking about yet again.
You, like most Stremio users, have zero idea and are clearly not techincal. Stremio is simple for people who don't have the knowledge to set up something better. There's nothing wrong with that. Just stop with the BS.
Finally! Been holding and paying the yearly pass like a muppet lol.
Finally a good deal!Hi all, slowly setting up a home theatre, dont have any stored movies yet(just netflix atm) but have heard Plex.
can someone shed light to this noob? Please! Most amazing app. Not only can you play your library but it brings essentially every streaming service app under the one roof.
Also things like being able to see Academy award nominations/winners, Cannes, Emmys.
It’s a one stop shop.
Anyone managed to access plex remotely whose on starlink? Since using starlink I can’t figure out bypassing CGNAT
You could try Tailscale?
Username checks out!
Cheers Guy, i’ll have a lookNo problem. Its super easy to use, I am a big fan.
Previously it has been possible to use a VPN to make the regional price cheaper on top of the discount.
I was wondering when I saw this deal if this trick still worked or got patched?
Does anyone else has an issue of shows not showing up on plex?
Sometimes it gets finicky with file names, if you add or remove spaces, change from S01 to Season 1 or vice versa etc. it may fix it.
I love my Plex - content is often faster than Netflix, even when viewing outside the household.
Do note: You get a fantastic service even using the free version, I personally only purchased Pro to support the company. So try out the free version to see if it's for you first.
Love Plex!
Was a MediaPortal/Moving Pictures user for many years, but recently moved over to Plex…. no regrets!
Thank goodness! I have been waiting for some time and been very tempted to buy it at full price for the ability to watch stuff on my phone.

I'm going off memory in part so if I have anything wrong hopefully someone else will jump in and correct me.
If you just create individual watch profiles for all the users, and get them to login with your account (which has Plex Pass) no-one will have to pay anything other than you buying the Plex Pass. They login with your account (and can stay logged in so only need to do this once per device), then select their own watch profile. You can PIN protect watch profiles.
If they know how, someone with the Plex Pass account password can log on via the website and change server settings, see all watch profiles data, invite new users to access server's media library and so on. They can't do it using other clients, only if they log on to the website in a browser.
If you have users that you don't want to give your account password to, their accounts will have some limitations. The biggest one being if they want to stream using the Android or IOS apps they'll need to purchase the Pro (or whatever it's called) version of the app. It's a one time payment, not a subscription like Plex Pass, and the Android one was $5 last I knew. That's the only limitation that's a big deal, everything else is small nice to have's, the biggest one I can think of is the skip intro feature.
Basically you'll use your account to buy Plex Pass and setup the server. The server and your account will have full features forever. There's no limitations on how many logins/household IP's/concurrent streams etc (unless you deliberately set it on your server). If someone is using a different, non Plex Pass account to access your media library, they'll have some minor limitations.
It's easy and doesn't take long to set up the server, and once done it does work simply but with a lot more features than DS Video.
Alternatives I know of (disregarding Kodi which is all client side and IMO clunky) are Emby (paid) and Jellyfin (free). Some people swear by one or the other or Plex. I haven't tried the others but I gather Plex is better for non-tech simple users.
Edit: added some info I left out.
