OMG been waiting forever and I was minutes away from buying it just now but got distracted!

    SAVER!

    thanks mate!

  • -7

inb4 the Jellyfin fans try to tell everyone how much better Jellyfin is despite the fact the clients suck on most systems.

    • +3

Jellyfin user here, exactly the reason I have been waiting on a sale for Plex. Clients on iPhone/Apple TV especially SUCK…

Sever is very good though. If only they could charge a small amount for the clients and get some paid help…

      • -1

Infuse looks good. But the actual intergration with Plex/Jellyfin is very shit unless you have a tiny library.

        • yeah honestly totally will keep using jellyfin mostly at home and buying Plex for remote access and reliable streaming mainly…

        • Are you using library mode or direct mode?

          • @askbargain: I've used Infuse for years now and it's still a bit jank to use - playback is great though.
Biggest problem is the cache resetting every time I open the damn app, but that's Apple TV's fault I guess

            I've tried both modes/

            • +1

@theguyrules: Annoying AF isnt it? Not even a space issue either.

            • @theguyrules: I had that issue initially but solved it by disabling library mode. Infuse works flawlessly when it’s not handing the database - just have it handle the playback.

      • +3

It's great on Android (through Findroid), hopefully things improve on the iOS side. Is it possible to install Kodi on Apple TV? I find the Jellyfin Kodi Sync works really well.

        • The casting support on the android app is horrific. Constantly disconnects, controls disappear, can't reconnect until you force close the app which kills playback. Often just plays one episode and stops. There was a server bug that would delete transcoded files before the client finished playing.

          Drives me batty.

          • @Planky: I keep waiting for Findroid to add casting. Hopefully not too far away.

As a side note, I always had a horrible time with Jellyfin when using my Synology NAS to run it. Once I moved it over to a Beelink N100 mini PC it has been flawless. I realise now that running software on a NAS is the wrong thing to do.

            • @greater mimic: Ill check out findroid if/when it gets casting.

Never had an issue with the jellyfin server side of things; up until recently I've had it running on a home built nas (intel xeon with a nvidia quadro for transcoding). Now its on a dedicated box (ryzen 5 5600 + intel arc a750) as I wanted to put a proper HBA card in the NAS but with only one pci-e slot the gpu had to go.

              • @Planky: I'm only direct playing 1080 media to a select few users so it's not even transcoding. My use case would probably be a lot lighter than yours but fortunately it works well for me. Hope you're able to very everything working.

                • @greater mimic: The pc app direct plays no problem but the web player and casting almost always transcodes for one reason or another. Majority of my library is 1080p but the various formats and resolutions, audio streams don't help.

Transcoding is just an easy out lol

              • @Planky: Check out Streamyfin! Great alternative but still in its early stages - made by someone on Reddit.

      • Tbh Plex has it's moments as well, they're both equal in terms of clients imo. Always get the best experience on desktop client.

    • I'm an Emby convert and I own Lifetime passes for both.

    • +1
      • That is extremely funny. What genius thought that was a good feature to make opt-out?

  • +3

Noob question, what does plextv is?? Sorry not a tech savie

    • +12

      Sorry not a tech savie

Not really for you then. It's a selfhosted Netflix replacement. You need to know where to aquaire your own media.

      • +1

I think PlexTV also includes their own TV channels, and free movie/tv library. The Cops TV channel is good background noise!

e: But you're right — it is 99% of the time for self hosted content

        • +5

Yeah, but this deal is for Plex Pass . You don't need Plex Pass for that.

          • +2

@PainToad: You are right, my mistake. This would be for the hardware acceleration and skip intro button then ha!

          • @PainToad: What about if you want to watch the live tv channels via the app? Isn’t the app only for paid subscribers? I use them when I’m bored on my phone

      • +3

You need to know where to aquaire your own media.

Imagining you said that like a dandy US Southerner.

    • +1

I have movies/tv shows on DVDs, I want to watch my DVDs without putting them in the DVD player all the time and from any device/location.

I need a server or a computer that's on all the time to be able to stream it. It's kind of like having your own Netflix catalogue, except you own all the media.

Other people get movies/tv shows from other places that aren't legal and run large 'Netflix' sized catalogues. Not me though! 🤓

      • Thanks

        • +2

You don't need a Plex Pass to do that though, it's for a few added features that the majority of people don't need

      • -3

except you own all the media.

        Sure you do… 🤣🤣🤣

      • What a Saint lmao

    • +2

Basically it's software that allows your illegally downloaded media tv shows/movies (nobody here does that stuff…) and legit media you recorded to be hosted and appear on your tv via an app/pc in a nice format similar to Netflix.

If you're asking the question its very likely you don't need it.

      • I think you mean Jack Sparrow videos and Linux ISOs

  • +1

I have all my DVDs ripped and in Plex. I also have all my CDs ripped and use PlexAmp like a self hosted Spotify.

I was cut when they removed photo syncing with no announcement or anything, just silently broke it.

I do worry about the long term of Plex with all the extra streaming channels and stuff, like one day they will pivot to something else or go out of business.
But I've enjoyed many years of my lifetime pass so I guess I can't complain.

    • +1

They've just announced beta release of Plex Photos (standalone app) as they're planning to remove photos and music for standard Plex completely it seems.

      • Ooo. I haven’t read about Plex photos yet, I’ve had a lifetime for years now, good tip thanks! Where do I find info about this?

  • Noob question. I currently use plex but the vids constantly buffer when I watch on home WiFi to a point where I've stopped using it.

Will paid plex improve or fix this or is it totally unrelated issue?

    • +2

If it's a network issue, no.

If it's a CPU transcoding issue and your server can do hardware accelerated transcoding, possibly.

    • Either you're transcoding and it isn't working well or your WiFi is poo.

Plex Pass may fix the first one by enabling you to hardware transcode.

    • +1

Check your server settings and the load it's under.

    • +1

Subtitles can be an issues. Look into updating your codecs on the server as it can be this too.

    • +2

I had this issue too. Try converting your MP4 files to MKV format and upload in media server. That worked for me and no more buffering

    • +1

There are quite a few encoding types which Plex doesn't support. You can't tell from the file type (eg MP4, MKV)

Whenever we try to play a file Plex doesn't support, it automatically converts the file on the fly, while we're watching it.

This can cause buffering- sometimes just a little, sometimes a crazy amount.

The common wisdom is to "acquire files in the supported formats", OR "convert your videos beforehand" (which can be done in Plex server).

But in my experience, neither are great. Instead, I found that using the "force direct play" option in Plex client was a life saver. This option tells Plex "even if you aren't quite sure that you support this file encoding, just play it anyway". This works perfectly for every file I've tried . Removed all buffering, and now streaming at source quality (not a converted version with lower quality). YMMV

      • I don't seem to have that option under Advanced? Do you have the paid plex?

        • +1

No I don't. It should be on any plex client. But I can't remember what menu it was on, you'll have hunt for it

    • Plex Pass will give you the ability to do hardware transcoding (otherwise it's just software transcoding).

You'll need hardware that can take advantage of hardware transcoding too, for example, if you have an Intel CPU which has integrated graphics (iGPU), check that CPU spec to see if it has 'QuickSync' functionality (go to Intel's specs site).
QuickSync can take advantage of that hardware transcoding.

Now with regards to your issue, if it's a network/wifi issue then Plex Pass won't help.
If your issue turns out to the a transcoding issue (i.e. software transcoding is too slow) and you have the right hardware then Plex Pass could help.
If you don't have the right hardware then it's still not going to help much.

There some other features to Plex Pass (that isn't related to your issue) but this is one of the main reasons.

  • have a google chrome 4k do dongle, lack of USB on it means movies are a on PC, need a server to store the movies on and a client from the google TV store, would plex solve my problems but at $120 for plex an android media player with USB would be cheaper. what people running for free with a chrome google tv client ?

    • If you want a simple solution, install Kodi on you Google TV and share the media on your PC via a samba share.

      • Agree, Kodi is good on Google TV, some good add-ons as well for the fta catch-up apps to bypass ads(and I prefer the list type gui). There's also a good add-on for sports.

Would you say a USB 3 HDD into the back of a router and samba share would cut it performance wise? I assume this wouldn't have hardware transcoding even with plexpass (but still fine and watchable it better using PC when you want to)?

        • thks will give kodi a go, router has usb 3 … $0 investment if it works, also have a n100 mini PC if i want to set up a server but router also means low power and i will see how it goes.

          • @garage sale: Yeah I wouldn't mind testing it either.. Nice not to have a pc running to watch movies, and every time i look at setting up a nas it's at least $800 ha.

    • Install Jellyfin server and use Kodi to play the movies on your Smart TV. Configure it not to trancode the videos.

    • +1

Just use the free version of PLEX, which you can install on google TV

  • -1

is there any way to set up plex to get the equivalent of Stremio/real debrid to use on Apple TV?

    • Yea there are paid servers but it'll cost you more than stremio.

    • plex_debrid used to be such thing. But not sure if it still works - the guy who was maintaining it gave up few months ago.

  • whats the lowest this has ever gotten? Am I actually getting a deal or has it been cheaper? I'm considering buying but also ok with not using plex on my mobile/tablet as it works fine through the google tv

      • +1

The last 25% was 2018 it seems?

Anyway I needed this to allows my son to have his own library without me having to put the pin in every time.

        • Last 25% off was 28/12/2023

  • Best and affordable server for this - anyone can recommmend ?

    • +2

For Jellyfin I use a Beelink N100 mini PC, I think the EQ12. Works great and should be the same with Plex.

    • +2

One of those n100 mini PC's that go on sale should work decent

    • +2

Look for N95/N100 minis. Both have transcoding support for it.

    • Thanks everyone !

    • +2

I use the optiplex 7050 with an i5 7500t that can be gotten for around $130. I think it's more powerful than the n100? Or around the same

  • Purchased this many years ago, didn't use much at the beginning but currently have multiple PleX set-ups with Synology, including Plexamp, which has been a great replacement for YT Music (as Google will eventually cancel my Indian premium subscription).

    • Does Google Home or Amazon Alexa have integration with Plex or Plexamp as a music service?

      • +1

Not Google, unless you set-up home assistant AFAIK. I haven't done that yet. I've had Google ecosystem for many years but I feel it's getting dumber and less useful, often irritating.

Alwo, Plexamp has a very annoying thing that you can't stream downloaded files from your device. You can still stream from the server, but if you've downloaded an album to your phone to be able to listen to offline, you can't stream that album from the phone to your Google Nest (for example).

  • I use Infuse for streaming my own self hosted media and it works really well. What’s the benefit of Plex and what features does it provide that might differ from Infuse? Are they completely different or have I got the wrong end of the stick?

  • +1

I don’t have any music streaming services, so Plexamp is great for easy mobile access to your whole library, especially good for CarPlay as well.

  • Is Plex like Kodi but without the inbuilt piracy? I'm just curious as I've looked at there website and all I see is a app that organises media. Which many free apps do.

Like, what's this do that's so awesome?

    • Great client apps, easy to use, popular. Most paid featured get moved to free over time, think of the pro like a paid supporter pack for early access to new features.

    • Kodi inbuilt piracy…

Do you have any links to read?

  • Given Synology's recent termination of Video Station, I'm looking for a new way to organise my media collection built up over the last couple of decades and serve it to various Apple TVs in the house, and occasional streaming to mobile phones/laptops/etc (ie transcoding). Bonus points if the client apps are all free (and even better if they offer a download feature). Is Plex the right way to go for this one off lifetime fee?

(main requirement is that it tracks viewing history, preferably by user, and is super easy to use for my extremely non tech savvy family members)

    • Plex is a good fit for that. I run it on my DS918+.

The client apps are free to use with your Plex Pass account. Other accounts can buy the Android app for $5 one time payment (at least that's what it used to cost), not sure about Apple. The apps do have a download feature.

Might not be super easy for extremely non tech savvy's but easy enough, you'll be able to teach them quickly. And it is the easiest to use of this type of service AFAIK. It does track viewing history by user.

      • Forgot to mention it's heaps better than Video Station.

  • +2

I have moved from plex to streamio and real dbrid.

    • +1

      Same here.

    • The latter is and unbeatable combo. You won't need to steam old DVD and BR rips. Works very well on Google TV & phone. Still costs quite a lot to set up a Nas, those housings aren't cheap.

      • Not to mention power of having the nas consistently running and upkeep of failing hdd.

        • yeah it's just easier pluggin in a HDD (powered or portable) into the back of the telly.
Shame the Google TV don't have expandable memory or USB.
Easier just streaming these days bro.

    • +3

+1 Plex is so antiquated in comparison to torrentio + stremio + real debrid. Easily worth the $4 a month.

      • +1

Plex just plays media… why are you comparing it to software that downloads stuff? You can use plex with any automated downloaders.

        • In the end its doing the same result except streamio real debrid is easier. I no longer need to store the media. Everything is there instantly. But does cost monthly. $24 6 months.

      • Stremio unfortunately doesn't work with Apple TVs.
I know I know, Nvidia Shield or CCWGTV work, but they aren't as nice IMO.
I use RD with Radarr which isn't quite as fast but works with Plex

    • My issue with stremio is that the buffering takes quite some time.
There is no profiles so I can't ensure my son will only see a list of kids stuff.

Plex app is available on all smart TV usually which isn't the case for the stremio app.

If they fix this, I would say stremio is pretty solid.

      • Yer i hate thinking of some movie then turning on pc dl it store it then watch it once and store it forever.

  • Finally! Been holding and paying the yearly pass like a muppet lol.
    Finally a good deal!

  • Hi all, slowly setting up a home theatre, dont have any stored movies yet(just netflix atm) but have heard Plex.
can someone shed light to this noob? Please!
