Seems like a pretty good price for a reasonable router that will neither blow you away with performance or awful appearance.

  • Should I go for this, + NBNco modem or a VDSL modem router combo? Currently using a 5 year old Asus RT-AC66U B1…

I think one piece of gear is a lot neater than a telco and bridges modem and quality router.

I've moved somewhere with fttb so picked up an Asus DSL-AX82U AX5400 from eBay. Turns out it's an Optus branded one so seeing if I should/can flash it with asusrwt or Merlin fw.

      • To give the alternative, I prefer two routers; using ISP’s modem/router/AP as a ‘DMZ’ where untrusted guests, work laptops etc can connect, then a personal router to connect personal kit.

        • That's fun but it's a lot of extra gear and faff for home. usually you turn the wifi off for the bridged modem/router and all the rsp settings are done in your actual router.

I wouldn't mind if there was a good xaDSL only modem for cheap, but most cost almost as much anyway and nothing special.

    • Purchase a router like this RT-AX59U if you have an nbn box (FTTP, FTTC, HFC, Fixed Wireless).

VDSL modem/router all-in-one are designed for nbn FTTB and FTTN.

      • Hey mate doesn't seem like any better all in one than the DSL-AX82U AX5400 for $350-400 in your opinion?

        • +1

Yeah the Asus DSL-AX82U is the best VDSL modem/router all-in-one.

@Twix: Thanks, that what i figured as well.

  • I'm currently using a RT-AX1800S and am getting some loss when gaming. I'm not sure if it's because of my router or my ISP. Any comment on when I'd need something like this (more cores and RAM) compared to a AX1800S? I have ~10 devices connected.

    • Packet loss? Who is your provider?

      • Yea packet loss. I'm with OCCOM / Opticomm in a relatively new apartment.

        • +1

I doubt the problem is with the RT-AX1800S. Give Launtel or Leaptel a go. Get the ISP to disable CG-NAT if you host games.

  • Wouldn't the nest pro 6e at $141 at Bunnings be a better option?

    • linkage? i am not seeing it

      that's a pretty good price for a 6e router

another other is the tenda ax5700 but i think it might need heatsink mod because they seem to fail after a while - probably heat related

I bought this last week and first impression is good. The discreet case and internal antennas blend in to open areas. I think its called wife approval factor? I've got it in the TV stand as an aimesh node to extend wifi in the living area and to hard wire the apple tv, homepod, etc. back to the main router. It only has 3 ethernet ports which may be limiting for some. Can't comment on gaming performance.

    • saw the 3 ethernet ports , some specs quotes 8 but it’s 3 if you look at the actual unit picture.

  • I'm useless at technology and I am looking for some help. I recently upgraded to FTTP but I am still using my old belong 4353 modem. Internet tends to cut out sometimes and I have to restart the modem. If I buy this can I just throw out the belong modem and use this? Or any recommendations on what I should buy. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Yeah ditch the Belong router. Plugin the Asus router to the nbn NTD box and configure the Asus WAN connection type to your ISP.

Is a single router enough to cover your home in Wi-Fi?

      • My house is one storey 3 bedroom. It's not too large. Is it difficult to configure the WAN type

        • It's easy enough. Who is your provider?

          • @Twix: "more" is my provider

            • +1

@melbstheburn: Download the Asus router app on your phone.
Advanced, WAN, WAN connection, change it to PPPoE.
Type in your More username and password and apply.

  • I'm not too familiar with using a BYO modem for my own internet. I currently have HFC connection with Origin Internet and currently using their NetComm NF18MESH Home Gateway modem. Would the RT-AX59U be a better option? TIA

but where are all the antennas?

  • What are the pros and cons of using this (or any other router) vs a wifi extender, purely to extend the wifi range in your house?

    • i have the asus 56u and wasn’t getting coverage to the lounge room with my old tplink 3000, the asus has better coverage and saved me doing mesh or extender. problem with extenders is reduced bandwidth , with mesh it uses bandwidth, if you have 2.4 and 5 ghz you can at least select which frequency to use to link the units. might see if jb price match as i think this new unit be better for my 5 ghz devices … have some ax devices.

      • Yeah Asus are great I prefer the interface too, and if you like to tinker you can change the firmware as well. It's good to stick to such brand and just add another device to create a mesh if need be. The ones with the antennas do an apartment very well, with full signal pretty much.

  • might ring jb see if they one in stock at my local …pity officworks don’t have them.
