just get a few redmi routers. they are around $100 and work well together as a mesh. wifi 6 or 7

    • Do you mind sharing link or sending me a DM about which ones you are talking about?

        • You can mesh these?

I have the Google Nest Mesh and I'm moving out and need one for my house, so need something that works well.

          Would you recommend?

          • @itsmoe: I only have one. Would recommend. Haven't installed openwrt because it's quite time consuming for this model. Hopefully you can read some Chinese to follow the setup prompts on your browser

            • @belongsinforums: Nice, I'm a bit of tech guy but not an expert and would rather avoid having to learn a new language lol

Thanks for the share though my dude.

@itsmoe: There's probably tutotrials on YouTube that translate every button every step of the way

$375 for nest wifi pro not long ago on ozb, so yeah not worth it.

I upgraded from these to pro and it's fixed the 'slowness' issue for me

$278.99 via their Mobileciti eBay store with code KICKP10

  • Not bad price. Got these previously and easy setup. Only thing is if having lots of smart devices the 2.4 can be hard to connect. Cannot split them.

  • maybe a stupid question .. but does a mesh wifi increase the radiation in the house ?

      1, 2, 3, 4

Not being condescending or putting you down, but radiation from WiFi is part of the EMF spectrum that is non-ionising, meaning while it can excite atoms at a sufficiently strong level, causing them to heat up as in the case of microwave ovens, it's nowhere near strong enough to directly affect the structure of atoms and in turn things like DNA which I'm assuming is what you're concerned about (things like cancer, infertility etc.). Furthermore, a typical indoor WiFi signal has an RF-EMF level of ~2V/m at 1m away and about ~5V/m at 0.5m away from the router. Both these values are well, well below recommended guidelines for both 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz bands at 61V/m.

In short, you're perfectly safe from any radiation harm whether it's a mesh or a non-mesh router :)

      • thank you .. that was very well explained

  • I think if you're shelling out $300 for a router in 2024, you should be aiming to get something with wifi 6. The TP Link Deco X50 goes on sale for about $260~ for the 3 pack so that seems like better value imo

    • the TP link will also probs receive 0 security updates lol. I'd much rather a "slower" unit link this that is guaranteed to get few years of updates over one that isn't.

      • That's fair, if you're worried about security updates, both are probably not great options. Google router has release notes, but there's no real way of rolling back a dodgy firmware. the TP-Link has release notes, but only of the last 3 firmware revisions, but you can roll back if needed. Both have had firmware releases in the last 12 months so that's something.

  • Do not buy these trash routers.

    • What makes them trash? Genuinely asking as I'm thinking of getting something like this to get better wifi in a granny flat off the main house.

      • The issue is it has to travel from house to Granny flat firstly. So the speed you get at the router is maximum you can get there. But it would improve in the area. With these I found that the "handover" is not the best. Example if they arrive at main house and hooks up to main house router wifi it sometime stick to that and not connecting to Granny flat one when walking to back of house. And very slow if doing so.

      • From my 3 yrs experience, the two points got randomly offline and sometimes no internet at all.
I had to turn it off and on again to get it working.
        Used in a two-story house.
Also the main point only has one lan port & extra points have no lan port.
I’ve switched to two Redmi Ax6000 and it works well (wired access point though)
Go with wifi-6 as much better coverage and signal than wifi5

I had this happen to me too. the points would either go offline or slow down to an absolute crawl and powercycling it fixed it. Real pain the arse.
