Streaming Game from PC to TV

What is the latest suggested solution for streaming games from PC to TV?

This is my current environment:
- Wifi6 mesh (with ethernet port)
- TV (60hz 4k HDR) with Chromecast with Google TV 4K
- PC with 7800X3D and 4080

I know in the past people used to recommend nVidia Shield. I wonder, is it still the best recommendation for this?

I have installed Moonlight on the Chromecast but the performance is not that great.

Should I try using those cheap Kamrui PCs?

I have a 3080 and use Sunshine (https://app.lizardbyte.dev/Sunshine/?lng=en-US) on the host PC and just use the Moonlight app on an old Nvidia Shield I had (also works fine directly on my cheap no name brand Android TV) Both are plugged in via ethernet and have no issues. 4K 60fps without any issue and like 10ms latency according to the Moonlight overlay. I also use a Dualsense controller with VirtualHere over bluetooth and have no issues with fast paced games where you notice any sort of latency.

If you can directly use ethernet on both ends to rule out Wifi being the issue, that would be a good place to start, as wifi will add some latency, but shouldn't be too bad.

When you say performance is not great, what are we talking about here, like super bad latency? What does the stats overlay say when enabled in moonlight settings?

    • sorry, probably i wasnt clear…

the performance issue I observed was the Moonlight app itself running really slow and Chromecast with Google TV is starting to show its age.

i was indeed thinking of buying nvidia Shield as I think it is still the best Android tv box at the moment.

    • I've ran mine at 720p over 4G to my tablet with an Xbox controller connected. My PC is connected to 5ghz channel on wifi 5 and I have no issues. Also run 4k games to my 2017 shield in lounge room and no input lag. I use my shield every day and still runs awesome, only annoyance is it takes probably 20 seconds to get going after you wake it up. My shield is the non pro model. Not sure what they're worth now but may still be a decent option.

I also came across an application to run with sunshine called playnite today as well. Seems like a cool idea and gonna give it a crack tomorrow.

  • How far are you stretching the range and through what mediums?

I ran mine stream through a Nvidia Shield and my gaming laptop and both still had input lag over wifi 5. The dirty solution that worked best was simply to have extended cables run from PC to the TV.

    • its a 3 bedroom unit so its not a big house…

I can connect the PC using ethernet to the Wifi mesh in the study room so hopefully that should reduce the delay albeit probably still not as good as wired all the way to the PC.

but i can see you were using an nvidia shield… i was wondering if there are other alternatives such as those cheap (potentially spyware-laden) Windows boxes?

what cables did you run from the PC? is it HDMI directly? so what about the controllers? I assume if the controller still needs to talk to the PC in another room there may be bluetooth issues etc?

I've got an old thinclient that I nabbed for $60 and installed windows 11 on and run as the moonlight client into the TV. Works a treat for 1080p/120hz. I think it can do 4k60 but I haven't tried as I prefer the 120fps and am happy with the 1080p stream.
