PS5 Pro Announcement Tonight! Anyone Else Worried It Will Instantly Sell out Due to Bots?

With the Sony technical announcement tonight at 1am EST from Mark Cerny is anyone else worried that it will be instantly unavailable due to bots and scalpers?

Other thing I'm worried about is that the Pro won't come with a disc drive as standard. Really hope that's not the case.

What are you guys most excited about the new Pro?

Personally, hoping the extra GPU power and PSSR will improve the terrible picture quality we have been getting from games running at 720p and then upscaled with fsr2 to 4k.

Edit: With the announcement of the Pro costing $1199 and another $160 for the disc drive I am no longer worried. The price is just bare able, but no disc drive is the worst part.
Oh, and don't forget it comes with no stand as standard either…….

      • USD prices exclude tax. $770 USD will be $1152 which isn’t far off local prices. You’ll need to find a US store that won’t add the GST charge (like Amazon and many others will) and also hope that customs doesn’t catch the item and add it themselves.

Might not be worth the hassle, especially if it impacts warranty. We’re not paying much more unless you can dodge any taxes.

Importing the disc drives lower risk given the lower cost.

I’d consider waiting to see if any retails offer a bundle with the drive.

        • ah yeah true, good call

    $1360 with a disk drive? That’s insane!
No need to worry about scalpers, Sony have brought them in house.

  • Vertical stand and disc drive sold separately.
It probably for people that are still using PS3. They used PS4 games for the announcement. Feels like a downgrade from PS5.

    • They used PS4 games for the announcement.

They couldn't find any current-gen games.

  • There's not much worth playing on PS5 anyway. What is the point.

    • What kind of games do you usually enjoy? Forza? Runescape?

Microsoft putting all their Xbox games on PC basically nuked the console market anyway.

    • Yep exclusivity is dead. Even Sony are porting their games to PC faster now too. Won't be long till it's day one like MS/xbox.

Money is made from the games and micro-transactions. Not hardware.

While I'm not a fan of this pricing and certainly won't be buying one at this price, let's not forget that the original PS1 launched in Australia for $700 back in 1995. According to the inflation calculator on the RBA website, that's the equivalent of $1447 in 2023 (RBA site doesn't include this year, but presumably it would be a bit higher), so yeah this is about on par with that once the cost of the drive is taken into account.

My bigger concern is if this is a sign of things to come for proper next generation console prices. Are the PS6 and XBox-whatever likely to get this kind of price tag, too?

    • i wouldn't even but it at $700 if i already had a PS5. There is no value even at the same price as the console we already have. Especially if you dont even have a TV to match the HZ,FPS

HOLD til tiit drops to $500~$600 mark. I suspect it'll drop like crazy in second quarter of 2025 due to poor sales and that they have to off load inventory.

    • It won't go that low. Base model PS5 digital is $679 (at JB). They're not cutting that price (the days of consoles getting gradually cheaper over their lifespan seem to be gone), and Pro price will remain significantly higher than base model. Best case this might get down to $1000-ish in a sale. I wouldn't expect them to build huge numbers of this in the first place so unlikely they'll have a fire sale to clear excess stock.

    • it will go that low when the PS6 is out lol. This Pro is the least upgraded Pro in history. The PS4 pro had benifits, but now we have 4k, what more can we want. its up to developers to develop better graphic games. and even then, use a PC, not many people have a TV up for the PS5 pros benifits

      • It'll be discontinued before then, just like the PS4 Pro was ahead of the PS5 launch.

        • when the PS6 is out no one is going to want a PS5 lol

I think the PS5 Pro should hit $999 when they realise no one is buying it.

The standard PS5 should get to $599 by Xmas etc.

          • @tonyjzx: Nobody will want a PS5 pro. PS5 will still be around. They're still selling PS4's today.

I assume you're referring to the digital PS5, not the disc one. But even then I don't really see any reason why the RRP will drop to $599 by xmas. Maybe the odd sale here and there, but not a permanent price drop. Those price drops don't seem to be a thing these days. The standard (ie non-Lite, non-OLED) Switch is still at the same price it was when it launched. The base PS5 price has actually gone UP since launch, not down. And they don't seem to be having any trouble selling them at the current price point. Hell, even Microsoft aren't cutting the price of the XBox series X/S and they're getting spanked up and down the block by the PS5. They just don't seem to be getting the same cost reductions over the life of the hardware that they did with previous generations.

Will League of Legends, Counter Strike 2, Deadlock or World of Warcraft be able to run on them yet?
I’ve been wanting a PS for ages, like almost 20 years and haven’t got one yet because they still can’t run the most basic games.

For $1100 and I assume I need to spend 2K+ on a TV that can do 4K that looks nice and 1440P at 120Hz it’ll be an absolute steal

  • I dont think you will have a problem finding one

  • There is no way this thing is going to sell out to bots.

And if it does, they will not sell second hand.

  • Sell out due to Astrobots maybe.

    • Nope. Die-hard fans won't be enough to cover the 1-10 million sales they're expecting. It's not likely to hit 100k.

Problem is, retail is going to struggle with $1199. They're stepping into the fringe of 0 month financing deals along with White Goods pricing. This cuts off a lot of teens and preteens. It's also a higher price than their 'flagship' ie cheap Chinese, high profit TV's that help sell extended warranty packages.

$500 is tough, $1000 limits the age of the buyers to those above 30, Even though there's BNPL, most gamers are going to need to start saving $200/month.

It's likely to be moved into Bundle deals with a TV so people won't notice the 4 figure price bump over the already overpriced Sony OLED, and I'd expect the price to be non-flexible as they try bundling with a Bravia TV, "new" Games, ie Assassins Creed Shadows, Starfield, et al

Given people haven't seen the specs or raw footage, just 20-50 seconds of 'enhanced' 1080p youtube gaming, it's still early days on wether it's going to be anything other than a desperation move, too late to affect the playerbase.

November's games lineup will likely need a hail-mary Christmas title to secure P5P sales. And that's not Concord or FairGames or Starfield. Sic. Although … Starfield for Playstation, IDK. Maybe it comes with a trip to space as well.

      • We have Afterpay now, it's just four easy payments of $299.75.

        • People that don’t have the money to buy it in first place use Afterpay.

          • @[Deactivated]: They'd just waste the money on booze and takeaways anyway. At least with after pay you get a PS5 Pro instead of getting fat.

            • -4

@AustriaBargain: I waste my money on booze, I regularly purchase bottles of high quality bourbon whiskey and Scotch whisky… I’m certainly not fat at 72 kilos, and I’m quite fit, strong, and muscular, not to the extent I was before Covid but I can still lift 110kg on the bench press at 5 reps. I also have a collection of over 4000 1080p Blu-rays and over 1000 4K Blu-rays, and I guarantee my knowledge, experience, and expertise with regards to evaluating quality and the topic of assessing quality vastly surpasses yours. I have hardly commented about these things in depth on this site, because the majority of people on this site are quite amateurish in this regard, most people that do know what they’re on about don’t come here to discuss these things and do try to refrain from educating others… People that come here and comment a lot about theses things generally can’t hold their own where it counts amongst people who truly do know what they are talking about, such as those on the Blu-ray.com forums that I previously mentioned.

              • +1

@[Deactivated]: Sounds like you got it all figured out 👍

                • @AustriaBargain: I do, and have since about 2010, and always will, I certainly don’t want or need the advice, recommendations, and the opinions, from you or anyone on OzBargain 🙂

@[Deactivated]: Well us amateurs are lucky to have you.

                    • @AustriaBargain: What do you need me for, I thought you and the majority of other people that post about these topics on here were already great sources for high quality accurate information?

  • Hahah, no disc version at this high price. Good lord, what are they smoking.

  • +2

For $1000 with a disc drive I might have coughed up for this thing, but I think I'll pass.

I'm still pretty happy with my PS4 pro and have heaps to play, so this thing can wait. Good luck Sony.

  • -2

increase price and remove disc drive, and price it at 1199, great fkn strategy, the real bargain is the old ps5 with disc drive that might have %10-15 percent less graphics for 500 bucks

    • -1

The old PS5 with a disc drive is $799 not $500.

      • no shit sherlock im not talking about RRP im taking about the numerous deals posted on here around the 500 mark that you clearly missed

  • gosh i feel so sorry for the people who are saving up for this, their eyes are going to be shocked when they notice no difference to 99% of the games they play on the current console and 100% of the games on their PCs .

if i was on 200k per year i still wouldn't buy this.
id only buy this if its a tax right off if you have a job that somehow requires gameplay or reviewing.

firstly, a game needs to be made for it, any existing game will likely look the exact same. secondly, your PC you already have that costs more, USE THAT. it will do a better job and if your a racer, or fps gamer, what are you doing with a console and a controller. and if GTA6 is the selling point just because of how good the background looks in the distance, your paying $1200 for one game.

secondly, even if the game you have is for the PS5 Pro, you likely use the PS5 on a TV that wont even handle the FramesPerSecond. Therefor you will need a new TV to get any benefit.

Gosh so many people are gonna waste money just from the advertising of backgrounds in games on $400 monitors and $2000 Tvs.

  • I’m undecided whether I’m going to buy a PS5 Pro, I likely won’t buy one at launch though which will be a first for me for a console for a long time, because in all honesty at the age of 43 I’m playing consoles and video games in general less and less the older I get, still buying PlayStation and Xbox consoles is more of a nostalgia thing for me these days.

I’m certainly not selling my original disc edition PS5, because it has a disc drive that doesn’t require online activation unlike the slim and Pro PS5 consoles, and therefore the disc drive in the original PS5 model if it doesn’t develop a fault will be more reliable 10-15 years from now than the detached disc drive for the slim and Pro is.

If I decide that I don’t want to sell or trade in my slim PS5 disc edition (if I were to sell it I would remove the disc drive to use for the Pro model, and sell the slim as a digital edition), and do purchase a Pro, then I will want a disc drive for it, as well as black and/or silver face plates because I don’t like and want a white console, so the additional cost for other colour face plates will make the price of the Pro for me around $1500.

I currently use a 77” Sony A95L QD-OLED TV in my main set up, which is objectively the best performing consumer TV to date in the majority of areas, I care about high quality which is why I almost exclusively watch 1080p Blu-rays and 4K Blu-rays on it and own thousands of them, rather than mostly watching inferior quality on streaming services and FTA TV on it (a high end TV is wasted on people in my opinion if BD/4K BD isn’t what they primarily watch), so I do see myself eventually buying a PS5 Pro.

  • Sony takes a page out of Apple s playbook. Let’s see if we can squeeze more out of consumers since there is no competition. Best to avoid this unbundled trend. Next time the power cord will be sold separately too

  • A lost opportunity for Sony to make this PS5 Pro natively backwards compatible (disc & digital) with PS3, PS2 & PS1 + PS Vita & PSP. (That extra horsepower surely)

If these were natively supported, plus include:
    a vertical stand,
    a pro controller,
    a disc drive
and maybe include a full game or two (GT7, FFViiRebirth or Astrobot)
and a 1 or 2 yrs sub to Deluxe.

perhaps it would have made the $1,199 cost more acceptable to many day one. That’s a long list but a man can daydream a bundle.

    • Id love to replay the killzone series wish they did what microsoft did with there back compat being able to play 360 games in 4k is good!

      • I'd love to be able to play Ico. They remade Shadow of the Colossus for PS4 but didn't do Ico, so that's still stranded back on PS2 / PS3.

DriveClub running at 60fps would be pretty damn sweet, too.

  • first round will be small and probably sellout, but think you'd be silly to bite at the $1199 RRP.

same with the slim release pre-xmas last year. $799 RRP was insane, and within a few months it was available around $600 (deals $530-$630 from mem)

i suspect after initial salivators, it'll settle into barely moving and receive deals pretty quick. the ps5 slim should settle into $600-$650 territory and this should come in around $900-$1000. still high, but would at least make more sense.

the real problem with all of it, is theres barely any real next-gen games… v.surprised they didnt attempt to line it up for a gta6 exclusive release window.

    • v.surprised they didnt attempt to line it up for a gta6 exclusive release window.

R⭐️ probably didnt want to be tangled in Sony’s story/ insignificant midgen upgrade, or alienate/ confuse base PS5 owners.

According to Digital Foundry - based on the CPU specs of the PS5 Pro being similar to the base PS5 - gta6 is unlikely to be @ 4k60.

      • the gta6 budget by all reports is into the billions and i wouldn't put it past sony ponying up big money for a 6month window as in the past… that'd be the way to move a high spec premium console, but if they're not tying that in or it doesn't make a considerable difference, whats the point? an exclusivity window on its own in this day & age kinda doesn't make sense, as sony's already pretty dominant…

theres enough conjecture with things DF really have no clue about already, nobody will know until they're playable but either way another year aiming at delivering gta6 ultra performance, could have let them spec the ps5pro even higher, which might have been a lot more impressive to people and solved the 'where tf are the games?' problem if it had high performance in the game thats surely going to break all the records again…

people are somewhat underwhelmed at this boost, but id say moreso with the lack of next-gen games in general to show anything off. a bunch of old ps4 games that play well already, great… the ps5 already has the reputation of being a ps4pro v2.0..

  • No disc drive…

    Not buying it

  • It released today and it's still in stock everywhere - Amazon, JB, EB, Sony Online, Big-W, and HN. Also, according to the websites, it's in stock at all my local stores too.

I hope Sony get the message. In the meantime, this really doesn't bode well for the Sony supporting ‘PS5 Pro Enhanced’ versions of games on an ongoing basis.

Funny to see a few scalpers trying to sell them for a small premium though - good luck:
    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/326329963169

    • The real issue is not being able to get a disc drive sold out everywhere for more than a month now. I have my pro but cant play most of my games cause they are all on disc.

      • +1

        The real issue is the price ($1,200 + $160 + …)

  • Got mine and it looks sexy

It’s louder in fan noise compared to the OG PS5 tho
