Do I Need to Pay Utility Connection Fee When Moving?

Hey all, I am currently boarding at an apartment owned by my parents and will be moving into my own recently purchased home.

The utility bills in the apartment are under my name. hen moving to my new property, do I need to pay the utility connection fees listed in internet and gas/electrical plans? Also, will there be any issues with my name on bills on both properties?

Many thanks.

So how much did mummy and daddy pay for “your” home?

    Call and ask?

I can see from your profile you're based in Melbourne.

I reckon rather than transferring your existing utilities, do the Vic energy comparison (https://compare.energy.vic.gov.au/) to see if worthwhile switching to a different provider for your new address since it might be a different distributor. Then get it connected for settlement day and then cancel the old ones.

    • This.

  • Jeeez, so many utility connection questions tonight. 🤣

A lot of people got disconnected in the storm the other day.

Well it is a new connection, so if they have new connection fees, then yes.

    No issues.

  • It will vary depending on provider & retailer.

  • Moved into a new place few months back.

Don’t recall paying anything for electricity connection as the builder transferred the account to our name. We did have to pay a connection fee for gas and internet (NBN) which was charged by the Retailer.

No issues with having your name at both properties. Had that going on for a while as well.

Is electricity and/or gas already connected to the property?
Are the existing owners having it disconnected prior to settlement? (unlikely and a bit of a dick move)

The utility connection fee is for the utility to come out and physically connect the property to the grid. If the property already has gas and/or electricity, then this connection exists and thus you should see no fee, unless the existing owners pay a disconnection fee to have the utility come out and disconnect it.

No. Why would that be an issue?

    • Hi, I have noticed you posted a comment on churning in another thread. If I churn electricity and gas 3-4 times a year and add 5-6 credit card churns, will this noticeably impact my credit score or future home loan applications? My current score is excellent, so it seems worth it if I can earn up to $4,000 a year by churning. Thanks

It can, I believe, although I'm hardly knowledgeable in the area (have no credit cards). Having said that, I think that a colleague of mine did have some issues with their credit score due to churning through cards (and I don't think it was that many).

There are plenty of better informed people on this matter but, and I'm sure there would be a number of them on these very forums. Have a search through the forum posts, comments on relevant posts, etc; and if you deem it suitable, make your own post to ask the populace your questions.
