Ah, I remember when 512mb ones were about this price haha

  • +2

Blows my mind how much data can be stored on this minuscule piece of plastic

    • +3

      It boggles the mind.

I have basic understanding of how hard disk drives work. It's an old tech that's been refined for decades.

Same with CDs. The data is pressed or "burnt" on with a laser.

But how the F do you fit 2TB of data into a piece of plastic that's smaller than a fingernail?!

      • +7

        It’s very demure

        • +2

          Very mindful

      • Yep… and it's incredibly painful when either that tiny little piece of plastic breaks for whatever reason or you end up misplacing it :(

Ordered a few of the blue Samsung EVO Plus cards from Amazon US a while back - a few 512GB and at least one 256GB. Those are shit… lost one 512GB, another suddenly stopped reading properly and reported as only having 7-9GB of space, and the two I was left with (one 512GB and one 256GB) both report as being slow speed cards in my DJI Action Osmo 3 and Mini 4 Pro devices. From what I've read online these are elcheapo cards produced for Amazon with quality issues - fortunately the white EVO Plus cards should be their usual high standard of quality.

        • oh shit i have the blue ones

        • Did you buy direct from Amazon or was it a seller on Amazon? Because it sounds like the cards are fake.

I bought two of the blue ones (Samsung Pro Plus) direct from AmazonAU and used them in my camera on my trip to France in July and August and filmed the Tour de France and Olympics in 4K and the cards were perfect.

    Fast enough for Nintendo Switch?

    • +1

Yes using it with the Switch, everything plays fine

If you don't use their reader (needed for speed above 100MB/s), then get a gen1 for $54 via this link - https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B09FFFQ9KT/

Has been hovering in mid to high $50s for months, with ATL of $39

(I've got a watch on it)

    • By reader, do you mean the sd card adapter it comes with?

      • +2

no - their USB card card reader

all the UHS-I cards that advertise speeds higher than the spec (~100MB/s) are using proprietary signalling that requires compatible readers

is why the benchmarks ppl post in reviews top out in the high 90s

        • +4

Use can use any card reader that supports DDR200. I use: https://www.amazon.com.au/gp/product/B085P4Y1F1/ref=ppx_yo_d…

While DDR200 is a Sandisk extension of the SD UHS-1 spec, others have now adopted it. I believe there are no cameras or phones that can use the DDR200 spec when reading/writing that I'm aware of, its mostly implemented in card readers.

Keep in mind once the a page (data) is written to the block needs to be cleared before new data can be written, this is garbage collection, which in turn causes write amplification. The UHS-1 spec doesn't have TRIM, and with these monolithic dies that these SD card use, the controllers capacity to quickly move pages out of a block before the block can be erased is quickly reached and the speeds will drop, big time, yet still above the V-spec (V30 in this case). More info here: https://progradedigital.com/monitoring-the-health-of-your-di…

In other words once the card is full, use something like the SD Formatter https://www.sdcard.org/downloads/formatter/ using a full format to restore speed.

  • Good for DJI pocket 3?

    • It shouldn't be an issue.

Although, the pocket 3 kept giving me slow write errors when trying to record after formatting it on the device itself

It works just fine after I formatted it again on my PC

  • Can it use for gaming handle like steam deck ?

  • Is the Evo plus or Pro plus more suited to a dashcam?

    • +2

The Endurance model works best for a dash cam.

  • +1

Holding out for another 3 for $78 deal.

I've lost 3 of 4 of these exact cards. All sent back to Samsung in Olympic Park over the last 3 months (once I got one starting to throw errors I slowly tested the others and found the same issue) and all were replaced with Pro Plus 160MB/s by Samsung.

All had the same issue, max speed was 6MB/s write even after a full format using SD Card Formatter (which took almost a day @ 6MB/s). Tried all the hacks of formating it with different cluster sizes, different file systems, in camera, etc, all a waste the time, the card was just fried.

One is still working, but I've taken that out of service and now only using Pro Plus 180MB/s 512GB (have about 8 of them) on phones, camera, action cam's etc, time will tell if they are better. It just so much nicer syncing from an SD that can read at ~180MB/s, makes clearing an 512GB SD so much quicker. You will need a DDR200 SD Card reader to get these speeds btw.

All did maybe 4 full passes before failing. One was used in an Action Camera two phone's and a camera with a full size adapter. Really odd how they failed. Maybe it was X-ray or something because they did get scanned quite a few times. NFI, but RMA was painless and I got a better card out of it, abit not the one I use so I'll prob just get rid of them.

  • Any pointers for a $1.01 item to add to get free shipping?

    • Are these ones the same? Looks the same but cheaper but they may be gen 1 edition

  • +1

Current price has gone down to 53.70, comparable to Gen 1 prices.

    • damn mine arrived today.. oh well its just a few $

      • lol, that is true. I just ordered mine yesterday, along with a Ugreen sd card reader.

        • I just chatted with Amazon support for half an hour, they refused to give me the price difference because "on their screen it was $57.99", eventually got them to give me a free return label to refund my whole order. Just reordered with a USB-C cable to barely get $60.. I need the cable anyways.

          • @buyer-123: lucky you, the price dropped further to 50.27, but I don't think I'll cancel my current order.
