omg such tempting prices. Is it too cold if they’re coming out of autumn then heading into winter?

    • +11

Depends on your tolerance for cold tbh, I went to Paris a couple of years ago in the winter and had a great time and just layered a couple of layers of clothing :)

      Pros:
      1. MUCH shorter lines to a lot of popular places
      2. Didnt get hot when running around the city exploring
      3. Fresh bakery / Hot coffee in the morning tastes better (don't ask how it just does)

      Cons:
      1. Bit chilly
      2. SOME touristy places weren't open in winter

      • I would add to cons: it's darker. Paris isn't as bad as further north but you still lose a bit of sunlight which can impact what you want to do.

I love Europe in winter though. Way less people and it's way more pleasant to walk around (unless it's pissing with rain or windy) because you don't get hot and sweaty.

        • -1

Actually because Paris is further North it's worse…

If you go a bit more South you get more daylight. Just like how Melbourne has shorter days in Winter than Brisbane, but they have longer summer days. It's distance from equator.

          • -1

@JDearyMe: Yes - so Paris isn't as bad as further north (e.g., London, Edinburgh, Tromsø), where it gets darker much earlier. It's still noticeable in Paris. I worked there across a couple winters and used to be in the office at 9am watching the sun rise over the city.

            • @trawg: This post mentions Rome as the other option though??? Why would you compare Paris being South to other places….

              • @JDearyMe: Huh? The person I'm replying to mentioned Paris and the sale prices are for both Paris and Rome.

      Europe in winter is amazing.

      • Cold, wet and windy!

        Urrrrrgh

        • +1

Went from Istanbul to London over 30 days last January. It rained on exactly 2 of those days.

Be flexible with your itinerary and you can have a great time in Europe no matter the season.

    Very tempting indeed

  • Is this worth buying just for a one way ticket back to Sydney?
We already have a one way ticket to France, and will be training it to Rome which we plan to fly out of

    • If you haven't booked a return ticket yet it could be quite expensive getting a one way ticket home. Do shop around but you might be better off booking this deal and only using the return leg.

      • +9

airlines typically forfeit the entire trip once a leg has been missed.
thus, with the Paris/Rome to Sydney being the return leg, a no-show at Sydney will likely forfeit the entire ticket.
you need to see if pricing for a Rome to Sydney return is competitive against a one-way flight to Sydney and then can travel on just the outbound leg

    • +2

Be wary, a no show of the first leg of the flight (from Sydney to Rome) will most likely result in a cancellation of the return booking, and airlines are pretty strict on this so you can't really dispute it.

    • NO!!!

An actual one way booking direct with Etihad will be $1067 for your route.

Another option. Two separate tickets with Singapore Airlines comes out cheap on some dates in late November.
Booking FCO-SIN then SIN-SYD separately is cheaper on SQ than booking FCO-SYD.
That would leave you with an unprotected connection in Singapore, so take precautions like having a 24 hr stopover or seeing if your travel insurance would cover a missed flight.

For future reference, you should have booked a multi city ticket… Sydney to Paris, Rome to sydney.

Feels like so many people don't know this is an option, have had friends do a europe trip but because they bought a return to/from the same place, they had to drag their arses back to where they landed, eg London, when their trip actually ended in say, Barcelona.

      • +1

multi city ticket… Sydney to Paris, Rome to sydney

        They're called "open jaw" tickets.
        A -> B , C -> A

If the cities B & C are in the 'same sector', then the price is the same as the return ticket between A <-> B and A <-> C

However, choosing 'multi-city' tickets in a flight search engine, doesn't always gives you the same price,
because airlines sometimes view this as 2 x separate flights and don't like a return flight to be empty-ier,
so they charge a lot of money for them (eg. Qatar Airways!)

It's better to get "open jaw" tickets at travel agents, but your YMMV :-)

Still one of the worst airlines (service wise) from my experience. Their 777 is terribly old too.

    • +1

A lot of people assume Middle Eastern airlines are luxurious (and to be fair, it's mostly true for Business class offerings), but the economy class is often exactly the same as lower cost airlines.
For Europe flights, if you can get a deal with the likes of China Eastern - or any other Chinese airlines, the additional cost of flying Middle Eastern airlines is not really worth it.

Having said that, these Etihad prices are quite competitive!

Great prices. I think Oct/Nov is the cheapest months to travel to Europe and the weather isn't too bad.

Anyone know if theres better prices over the period of 15-22 December through to Jan 2-7th

IE do deals happen over that period or not?

    thank you!

    • what do u think?

      • -3

Thanks for the input. Go be useless elsewhere

        • +3

Nah he cooked with that one… what do you think - peak times over Christmas, reckon there'll be deals like this???

  • +3

If still available, get the Qatar one for similar price.
