One thing going for it, a lot of the essential stuff is way cheaper and made in Australia for the most part. Whereas some competitors, especially in the mayo space are 0% australian made.

    • +1

Then there’s the one that are made in Australia from 1% Australian ingredients. They probably used local salt and that’s it

      • Yes, just a salt bae sprinkle’s worth.

        • Nah the 1% is the lid of the jar.

        • So its salt that fell on the ground?

For my taste buds, this mayo tastes relatively awful.

It leans towards the sour and thick side. Decent for mixing sauces etc. but unless you like the OG sour mayonnaise taste, then this is not for you.

For comparison, the Praise mayo's are much lighter in sourness, tastes slightly sweet and egg creamy. ie. it's good on its own when mixing with say some Cos lettuce

My wife and I like the Coles whole egg mayo jars. Tried the Aldi mayo jars but didn't like them.

Agree aldi 'colway' mayo sucks. Heinz good.

  • +4

This is terrible mayo. I got a free sample a few months ago and threw most of it out.

No eggs, just an emulsified water/oil/vinegar concoction with spices to emulate mayonnaise flavour

This is Vegan friendly mayo - pity the vegans.

  • +3

Is it really mayonnaise without egg?

I'm surprised it isn't labelled "Mayo" to avoid labeling rules but there are no rules it seems.

    • +5

Is it really mayonnaise without egg?

      No

Mayonnaise comes from the French word moyeunaise, moyeu being an Old French word denoting the yolk of an egg.

      • Non

The French stopped using the word moyeu long before mayonnaise was invented and there is no French word moyeunaise.

Just more fake news from big egg. That said, it's still not mayonnaise without egg, no matter where the word comes from. The heathen goop supermarkets sell these days should be banished to hell.

        • Pretty sure moyeunaise is what my uncle used to call it after consuming a couple of bottles of French wine.

        • There are multiple theories on the word's origin - the one jv mentioned is just one of them.

Another hypothesis is based, according to Marie-Antoine Carême, a famous contemporary French chef, on a derivative of magnonaise (from the verb magner, or manier) or, according to Prosper Montagné, of moyeunaise (or moyennaise), based on moyeu(x) (or moyen) which means 'egg yolk', in Old French. It has also been suggested that the word be linked to the old verb mailler, meaning 'to beat'

        • Just more fake news from big egg

Not fake news if you studied linguistics.

          • +1

            @jv:

Not fake news if you studied linguistics.

Montagne wasn't a linguist. He was a French chef born long after mayonnaise was invented. Also I'm on Team Carême and I take my culinary history seriously.

Lyonnaise means in the style of Lyon (particularly their potatoes). Mayonnaise is unlikely to mean in the style of the centre hub of a wheel (or in the style of an egg yolk, for that matter). It is far more likely to be about the localised style of producing, especially considering there's multiple cities it could have been named after.

  • 23 calories per serving of 15 grams compared to Heinz 94 per 15 grams. Thats an insane difference. How does this compare taste and texture wise? Can anyone attest to this? Is cutting season back on, baby?

    • Its terrible. I bought one because it was so damn cheap and I want my $1.60 back. LOL

  • This is the worst mayo I have ever tasted

Great snack for the bus or at home. This mayonnaise is delicious and gives me all the energy I need for my daily activities. The packaging, while subtle, is a striking blue that catches the eye and evokes a feeling of completeness and joy. A must have for any home, and a highly recommended gift for friends going through hard times. 5 stars."

Is Woolworths paying for fake/bot reviews?

        LOL its clearly a joke/sarcasm

    • +2

      That must be sarcastic

      • +2

        Nope, not sarcasm.

I've tried it too, and honestly, great snack for the bus or at home. This mayonnaise is delicious and gives me all the energy I need for my daily activities. The packaging, while subtle, is a striking blue that catches the eye and evokes a feeling of completeness and joy. A must have for any home, and a highly recommended gift for friends going through hard times. 5 stars.

    • I mean they have a program that offers free products for review - some are under the impression that a positive review will get them more or higher value items

honestly, I'd pay to not eat it.

This is another of those things that is surprisingly easy to make if you've got the right equipment. Just need a stick blender or canister blender, two whole eggs, mustard, lemon juice/vinegar and oil. Don't need to dribble in the oil, just add it all in say two to three goes and whizz it to within an inch of its life. Never fails. It won't last at long as the bought stuff but tastes by far better and isn't full of gunk. I get that you mightn't be arsed making it, but it's certainly doable.

I made myself a promise when I bought a new canister blender that I'd never buy mayo again. It's been three years and I've not bought it once, but yes, I find I eat mayo less as I can't be arsed making it!

    We're nothing if not predictable…

    • Why not make the mustard, vinegar, lemon juice and oil yourself too?
Im not sure if you can make the eggs yourself though, at least not edible ones, especially if you cant be arsed making the mayo

      • +2

Indeed. It's a slippery slope this homemade stuff, next thing is to start making my own blender and electricity. Arguably I should be producing mayo for my local community, I've got some serious questions to answer here..I feel like I've let everyone down, but I'm mostly okay with that.

I hope this is more a clearance deal than a half price - maybe replacing it with something that isn't Clag?

  • I might have to hand in my OzBargain card, but Heinz "Seriously Good" Mayo (and Aioli) is half-price at Coles starting tomorrow. ($4.15 for 500ml). It contains Egg! (and isn't made in Australia - NZ!)

  • Better off using this Mayo to sear or roast meat as it helps to create an even browning.

  • I bought one the other day. Its already in the bin. Terrible.

  • What F mutant of horse 💩 is this?

Isn't mayonnaise supposed to have eggs? Main ingredients here are water and sugar! 🤣🤦

  • +2

How about just making your own?

    1 egg = 40c
    1 cup canola oil = $1.20
    1 teaspoon dijon mustard = 10c
    1 tablespoon vinegar = 5c
    Salt to taste

Blend together with an immersion blender or food processor with whisk attachment

    Total = $1.75

  • +1

770g of the best ingredients that $1.60 can buy.

    🤮

  • I've bought this before and this isn't mayo, more like a mayo substitute, it's sour and the texture is almost gelatinous and it's a bit translucent, just tasted and looked so fake. Nasty stuff!

  • +1

The Aldi whole egg Mayo in a jar is way way better than this disgusting concoction

  • bought this last week. all im gonna say is cost of living graph has not intersected my desire to eat this again.
