Nice find, also a note to add you need to be signed in on the web browser not just the steam app.

Thanks OP! There's a joke here somewhere.

    • +6

      Itching to find it

  • +1

I dont get it. Is it in the address
    bar
    javascript:AddFreeLicense(486820)

    • +4

Yep. It won't allow pasting javascript: so you'll need to manually type it in, also make sure it doesn't default to search.

This shows up as A$1.50 when bringing up the game page in Steam app or web browser when logged in. Yet when searching for the game it shows free in the search results.

    Try
    https://steamdb.info/app/1387150/

Click in "Install" and "Cancel" after and done.

The game has now been added to my Steam library through the app

The game might be transitioning to free to play and is the midst of updating.

Did you try my method and did it not work?

      • From the steamdb page he linked click on packages and it shows there's 2 marked as free and the one paid one. When you use the add free license JavaScript command it's activating that free to play package for the game. Not sure if it's on purpose or an oversight by the dev that it exists, one of the free ones is marked 5 months ago and one 2yrs ago.

There is also also another game called "Jack is Missing" it shows free when searching but paid when looking at the game page. It can be added to your Steam library the same way.

Click in "Install" and "Cancel" after and done.

OP just gave us all crabs.

    • +12

      *for free.

As an Ozbargainer, that's the important bit…

      • Crabs for dinner, home grown!

The instructions probably only apply to chrome, for firefox: click the menu and "web developer tools" and you can use the console.

    • +1

      More detailed firefox instructions:
      * Ctrl+Shift+I or go to Menu (three lines) -> More tools -> Web Developer Tools
      * Click on console tab on the Web Developer Tools windows
      * type in "javascript:AddFreeLicense(486820)" and press enter.

      • Good to see more Firefox users

  • Hiphopopotamus, how did you figure this out?
Are there other games this works for??

    • +1

I didn't, someone else did and it was shared on the internet.

See above, Jack is Missing can be claimed in a similar way.

Geez, I don't think I've ever worked this hard to add some free games to my pile of shame… The confusion and hoops I had to jump through! But got there in the end - thanks OP and @g12345567 !

  • You can also use steamdb and click download and it will add it to your steam profile. I'm on Firefox and probably having same issues as others using this browser.

    • Two people above you already mentioned this method

Anyone know how to get Stardew Valley for free?

  • -1

It says supports Windows XP. But the Steam client now only supports Windows 10 or later. So in reality you can only play this on Windows 10 or Windows 11. Because of course the download is DRM locked through Steam. And some people call DRM through Steam a good thing?. For example in the future what's to stop Valve from not supporting Windows 10 any more through Steam.

    • Steam client is still installable/useable at least as far back as Windows 7 and Mac OS 10.13 High Sierra, as these are my two oldest systems I use it on.

      • ok my mistake. Then you need at least Windows 7 to be able to install the game.

Doesn't work, just errors with something about not being able to add this to your library

  • Worked on chrome on Android. Thanks OP and g12345567

Thanks OP. One more title added to my mountain of shame.

  • Is it over? I still get the pop up when I use javascript:AddFreeLicense(486820). If no one replies I'll leave it.

    • The steamdb page shows no changes to the packages for 5 months. Should still be available. Not sure who marked your deal as expired.

      • Someone reported it as expired, I'll un-expire it. Any new comments should shed some light onto its availability.

    • Price went to $4.50 after your hack! :)
      I'll try again later.

    It's $1.50 now

    • +1

Always been, you need to follow the OP instruction to get it for free (game show up as free when you search steam).

      • And this doesn't violate Steams user or licensing agreement?. By using a hack to get some thing free which is shown as not free on the Steam store?. I'm personally not going to risk it.

        • It is free, you can only do this for free game (Add"Free"License), like I mentioned above and in the many comments previously, if you search for the game they are listed as free for both "A Case of the Crabs" and "Jack is Missing" where it list the price, however for whatever reason the store page show as not free.

          • @AaronRain: It's $4.50 on the Steam page then the game actually is not a F2P game. If the game publisher wanted it to be given away for free to every one then it would be showing as free on the Steam page. So i don't think that it's their intention for people to be getting this game for free at the moment. You're using a Steam store hack to do so.
