Noob Q, will I get noticeable improvement upgrading from 9 7900x? 98% of the time for gaming, 2% for insta360 editing.

    • +4

you will get improvement when u "upgrade" to 7800X3D for gaming

      • +1

or hosting VM's…. having 16c/32t is quite useful there…

      • +4

        Don't generalise.

I emulate various platforms, and modern emulators like RPCS3 will absolutely consume your CPU. It really depends on what the use case will be, regardless of resolution.

      • Currently I typically just play older e-sports titles, a little bit of classic wow and some Baldurs Gate at 1440p and I want a 150 FPS. I'm running an 2070 super. Obviously I need a new graphics card, but I've heard anecdotally that getting a faster CPU say 3700x to 5700x3d would mean a significant increase in frame rate and the cost is minimal.

But if what you say is true, perhaps I should start researching higher end stuff and start looking at a longer upgrade path with a newer chipset. Thoughts?

Try installing the new windows update, apparently boosts performance for Zen 3/4/5 CPUs. It might make a difference for Zen 2 CPUs but I don't think anyone has tested yet. Also in that page they have BG3 benchmarks, 5800X3D is around par with 7000/8000 non X3D CPUs

        • +1

X3d cpus make a big difference for wow if you use a bunch of add-ons.

    • +4

      You could try hitting it?

  • +4

Totally misread and wtf'd over the name of that book

    • +9

        I'll look into that.
Then I'll hunt for a case with a book on how to defend myself in divorce court, thank you!

    • +1

Just hit someone until they give it to you for free

    • +2

Sure I'll go 50/50 on cost with you. You get the book, I'll take the CPU.

I do a bit of 4k video editing (GoPro footage) and 1440p gaming.

I just bought and yet to install a 7500F (for $150) + 4080 Super, as I couldn't justify paying 4x the price for a 7800x3d to get +5-10% performance at 1440p gaming. But this is tempting for the productivity benefits as well as 7800x3d level gaming… Is it worth me just getting this and not worrying about upgrading for years? Seems like an ATL

My plan was to upgrade to a 7950X3D/9800X3D/9950X3D in the future once prices are quite low and i feel like the 7500f can't keep up no more, but this is not a bad price at all..

    • Honestly, hold onto your 7500F and wait until the 9000 X3D variant comes out, not far to go, early 2025 release date rumored.

    • Really depends on how much you'll gain from the productivity side of things, you do HAVE to reinstall your OS any make sure that when gaming only the x3d ccd is being used and the other ccd is put to sleep (this is via AMD's chipset drivers), there's a few guides out there on how to make sure this is happening so there is some fiddling that for someone like me who has been into computers and shtuff for 25+years is fine but may not be for the average just want it to work with not fiddling type user.

The productivity gains will be substantial if you are using your CPU to do most of the workload and to be honest it is a better pairing for your 4080S than the 7500F as i would say at 1440p there are instances that you may end up CPU bound unless you crank all to ultra and use RT etc.

  • is this somewhat future proof? have a decent 8000 series intel setup but im wanting to build another system for the next 3-5 years again.

    • +1

Probably just buy one, some absolutely killer prebuilt builds on here

      • They are tempting and look great but i really do have a love for rebuilding and adding stuff to my desktops.

    • +1

Yeah, it definitely will hold out well. Close to the best gaming performance, and very good productivity performance. If all you do is gaming (and no heavy CPU productivity tasks) then just go 7800X3D

      • +1

Im sort of the opposite these days mostly heavy cad work and 3d stuff and a very small amount of smashing shit in beamng drive haha. i slept anyway its back to full price. im going to try get another few months out of my intel system i just ordered a 360mm aio to upgrade my 7 year old 240mm one and overclocked it yesti. if it dies it just means its time hahaha

        • +1

Yeah that's fair mate, things only get better and cheaper when it comes to CPUs. Good luck and enjoy the cooler (don't forget to adjust the fan curves to enjoy whisper quiet cooling) :)

          • @DiscountForThee: Thanks mate i shall HODL :) its got the lcd screen on it so its ticked all my boxes haha. i learnt about that over the weekend when i spent 2 hours installing 6 new fans and a hub to find out they werent pwm or adjustable without a remote so i pulled them out and sent them back.

  • This CPU has 128MB of cache vs 96MB on 7800X3D. Does this make it better for gaming?

    • +1

Yes and no. Depending on the game.

If you're looking for a general statement then yes it will be better. However is it worth the increase in price? Well then probably no, unless those extra frames are super important to you and the cost isn't an issue.

You're better off getting the 7800x3d and putting the money saved into a better GPU, you'll get far superior gaming performance this way.

    • +1

no definitely not, being a split CCD setup there's 96mb on the X3D CCD and 32MB (normal amount) on the other CCD, they are not used in combination and in gaming the second CCD will be parked so you are basically making it a 7800X3d in this instance.

      • +1

It's a bit more complicated than this, from my understanding at least. There are scheduler changes coming in Windows (and already active on Linux based OS / already included on Windows if you're on their beta/insider program) that should make it so the game threads run on the 3D CCD, and other background threads (OS stuff, non-game related processes you have running,..) run on the non-3D CCD.
Depending on your use case, i.e. if you're running other stuff while gaming, this makes a real world difference in freeing up the 3D CCD for the game stuff only.

        • Yep for sure it is ..this was already a thing in previous versions of winOS :)… i mentioned it in a post further up. Maybe 24H2 will also help with this aspect but i'd say the amd chip drivers will be what needs to be used and def check out some YT guides on how to make sure it's active and working (game bar is needed and all sorts of stuff)… not a CPU if you don't like fiddling :P

Perfect combo for anyone planning to get a new CPU to play league of legends with

    • with a 4090 at 1080p Low

  • +1

Unless your getting paid to make content not at all, save that $700 and buy the next 4080 tier GPU if you aren’t using one already.

  • +1

    Price went up!

  • That ipc and memory limit with compounded latency though :) not everything is about "fps".

    • how dare you sir! …. if this was 200 years ago this comment/insult would result in an instant duel!

      • *gnaws popcorn

  • +1

    Is this a joke?

  • +1

Sold out. Damn i wanted that book.

  • bought on the last deal and been happy with the CPU
For me, the dual personality of the CPU with shedloads of cores for productivity and the 8 x3d cores for gaming is pretty much be best i could ask for.

Reminder to those who may be upgrading from a lower tier 7000 series cpu, make sure you remove all the AMD software/chipset drivers and reinstall so the system schedules the cores correctly.

  • I wanted the 7950x3d :(
