AmEx Suspended Platinum Card

Has anyone had issues with card suspension shortly after getting the card?

My husband applied for an Amex card and it got approved without requesting any documents. A few days after receiving it, the card was suspended (weekend) as they tried to call my husband (left one voicemail - his fault for not checking but he's been very busy with work).

They want bank statements, we sent one that apparently they couldn't open and now they are arguing that the ones we've since sent seem to be scanned (I had to do print to PDF to get rid of the password protection) and will let him know the outcome tomorrow.

I don't understand why this is happening - has anyone been in this situation and had their card reactivated?

Update: The card was reactivated today (After 6 days of issues about the bank statements). They weren't happy with the last one as the interim bank statement for ANZ looks as if it was scanned (it wasn't - it just looks like that). They finally accepted the proper one that was only until end of July. The funny thing is, my husband just re-sent the initial e-mail which they claimed not to be able to open. I swear we've developed PTSD from dealing with credit card companies. :/

I don't understand why this is happening

    New laws for anti-fraud.

You need to provide all the documents they require.

    • I understand that, I'm just surprised that they're happy to send out the cards, let the people use them and then require bank statements. All other cards I've had required these kinds of things before sending out the card.

      • This is what surprised me too, I always assume this information was required pre application approval/card issued, not after the card has been sent, activated and used. I’ve had an Amex card previously where they requested documentation and until I provided everything nothing was sent out to me etc.

      • they're happy to send out the cards, let the people use them

I had to do that for cards I've had for decades…

  • approved or conditionally approved

    • We spent around 1K on it before it was suspended and didn't have any other indications that it was a 'conditional' approval.

      • unlucky then. that should be approved. if you like the card, be nice to them and hopefully it gets resolved.

  • Did you get a chance to use it before it got suspended?

    • Yes, we spent 1K (groceries, council fees etc.).

Relax, just forward through the docs and it'll probably get sorted quick enough. Hasn't happened to me but I am aware of some of the banks having previously had this practice.

  • I've been through this process a few months ago, it is called a "financial review" and is quite common for Amex charge cards (in most cases due to being randomly selected). All I did was send 4 months worth of bank statements and the next day the card was reactivated.

  • I had this issue when I first got the card. I was putting in tens of thousands and they needed to verify my income, etc. It was annoying but once provided, it was unsuspended and no issues since.

  • Had this many years ago with the Platinum Card. Annoyingly the suspension was also extended to all my other Amex cards as well until the block was removed. They called it a financial review, I was told in my case that the trigger was 'out of pattern' spending. I had been working overseas so didn't really use my cards (had local cards), then came back home and smashed some business expenses on it (5 figures). They pointed out that the spend had been many multiples of my historical per month spend (~$500), and this triggered the review.

I had also been approved for the Platinum Card without any documentation (although I was an existing Amex credit cardholder), although it took a few years until they did the financial review on me.

  • sounds like their system to send the cards isn't playing nice with the anti-fraud system and they're chasing it up.
