75" MiniLED or 65" OLED?

Hey Everyone - hope you're all keeping well.

I'm looking at replacing my 2018 65" Sony Bravia TV and have a budget of about $2.5k to spend. I'm struggling to decide which TV to get and hoping to get guidance from the OZB community before I proceed.

Use
The TV will be primarily used to watch sports on KAYO and streaming TV shows/movies. It will be positioned in the living room next to large glass doors with a fair bit of sunlight/brightness.

Options
I'm a Westpac employee and there is a special 20% off coupon code to use on the LG corporate discount website (CBA staff have the same discount as well). I'm looking at taking advantage of this offer and have narrowed down to the following 2 LG options (price is with 20% discount):
1. LG 75" MiniLED QNED91 4K Smart TV @ $2,559 JB Hi-Fi
2. LG 65" OLED EVO C4 4K UHD Smart TV @ $2,751 JB Hi-FI

I'm leaning towards the MiniLED option given it is 75" and slightly cheaper. From the various reviews I've watched on Youtube, picture quality is pretty close with the OLED just ahead. The LG 20% off coupon expires in early Sep-24, I think the price is pretty decent for the MiniLED but the C4 was much cheaper only a month ago for ~$2.2k (after returning the sound bar). Should I jump on this deal for the MiniLED or wait for the next deal on the 65" C4? I'm also open to other options (outside of LG).

Cheers

Yes, go the MiniLED - it is larger, it will be near large glass doors, and used for watching sport in the daytime.

  • Can I ask why you want to ditch your existing tv?

If you're using it to watch sports in a bright room, MiniLED is definitely the way to go.

    That LG MiniLED however isn't

    Stats comparison

  • in general MiniLED are brighter than OLED.. OLED is good at contrast because their black doesn't omit any light at all, but not well known for its brightness.

Ofcuz this is model specific so you'll need to be careful still.

  • I'd suggest going to have a look at both of them in store, and have a look at all brands.

The LG models typically use an IPS type panel, which is great for colour but significantly diminishes contrast (blacks often look grey). Samsung and Sony use VA type panels in most of their higher end models which have a lot better native contrast ratio (TCL do as well in their Mini LED for the most part).

The LG OLEDs picture quality in a medium-lit or dark room will be hard to beat. In a brighter room it would be worth looking at the Mini-LED models. I've got both types, prefer our OLED, but the mini-LED isn't far behind and was significantly less expensive for the same size.

  • If your 2018 Sony is an OLED and has no issues, don’t bother replacing it.
