Suggest a New Router Sub $200 for nbn FTTP

I'm in Perth and swapped to Leaptel (took up the FTTC to FTTP) and have found that Leaptel can be a bit glitchy - dropouts at random times. I wasn't expecting this especially as my previous provider I had no issues and was on a lower speed and only on FTTC.

I have turned off CGNAT in the Leaptel portal however one more thing that was suggested was to change my router as it's prob at least 5-6 years old now from the previous provider.

Can anyone suggest a router to purchase? Is there any decent ones for under $200?

telstra gen 2 or 3 and root it

    • like proper root it haha ? 🤣😜
Sorry I am a tech noob, what does that mean

      • The Telstra Smart Modem Gen 2 or Gen 3 is a Wifi Modem Router that is supplied free of charge* to Telstra nbn customers (assuming they got 12m plan) and because of that when people move on from Telstra they are listed on used marketplace for basically pennies.

Well, perhaps not pennies, but they are much cheaper than other Wifi modems due to how many of them there are on the market. If you do a search on Gumtree / FB you'll see units priced as low as $45~$50.

Root is a different term for superuser access, it just means jailbreaking the modem and gaining admin access, so that you can access all features of that device and use it's VOIP functions with non-Telstra ISP's https://www.techpowerup.com/forums/threads/guide-unlocking-a…

That said, you do not specifically need a modem router, you only need a router since you're on FTTP. The modem part of the Telstra routers are irrelevant for FTTP networks.

        • Just to add to this. Only the DJA0231 version of the Gen 2 can be rooted. It has vents on the side is typically the easiest way to tell them apart.

Once you’ve rooted the modem, it allows a few features.
WireGuard Server - if you need to access your home network remotely, and if you ever use public wifi you should do it via a VPN.
You can choose your own DNS server. If you use PiHole or AdGuard Home, it allows that opinion.
          VLANS.
It allows you to put any SIM card you like into the back. Telstra, Optus, Vodafone. Great for 2 reasons. If your internet drops, it’ll drop a few packets and then switch over (not really an issue with FTTP typically, or perhaps not as common) and if you go on holidays you could take the modem with you if the location charges you for internet. With it being your home wifi everyone should automatically connect to it.
Opens up the telephony access. If you have a home phone and know the VoIP details you can chuck them into the modem.
If you get 2, you can set them up as a wifi booster but need to be wired together.

Why not go for the eero 6+ via Leaptel on a 12 or 24-month payment plan (outright $150)? At least you'll then get some tech support for the dropouts.

  • CG-NAT is not the cause of your dropouts.

    TP-Link Archer AX55 AX3000 Dual Band Gigabit Wi-Fi 6 Router $149.22 Delivered @ Amazon AU.
    eero 6+ AX3000 Dual Band Gigabit Wi-Fi 6 Router $150 + $20 Delivery @ Leaptel.

  • what makes you think your existing router is the issue?
