Ok so my neighbour's cat is pooping in my backyard and this has been going on for a while now. I haven't approached my neighbour yet but I'd like to know what's the best course of action?
Neighbour's Cat Pooping in My Backyard

Have you asked it politely to stop?
It said, "meow".
This is from Reddit:
My wife’s Okie grandfather swore that if you fill milk jugs with water, cap them, and leave them at the corner of your lawn, cats will stay off the lawn. I have no idea if it works or why, but worth a try?
Maybe give that ago?
I heard that if you do a pagan dance by the full moon naked, you will stop cats coming onto your lawn. You will need to chant loudly while naked, and also sacrifice a live goat.
I have no idea if that works or why, but worth a try?
Username checks out
Heard you get great results if you ask the owner of the cat to join in on this ritual.
if you sacrifice a live cat, that cat will no longer frequent your yard (except as a ghost)
Not too long ago there was a story about a man living in rural Aus somewhere on a large property with a cat problem. He would catch them, drown them in the wheelie bin and then decorate the property with dead cat skulls and bones. He was doing this for years, one year he decided to post this on Facebook with photo's. I assume he was charged and no longer posts his kills on Facebook but I like to think he is still out there.
For the record I have no problem with cats, I have a problem with irresponsible owners and the amount of stray cats roaming around.
That was an old 80's tv prank that went viral. It does work, but some people believe in it.
That was an old 80's tv prank
OK, so not true.
It does work,
OK, so true.
some people believe in it
OK, so not true.
Two bob each way, anyone?
Oops I meant it does not work.
@Sickman: No probs. I was having a particularly snarky afternoon yesterday. And your post was my 'mildest' smartarse response.
What was described reminds me of the old 'half filled with water two litre plastic bottles placed beside a car's wheels to prevent dogs peeing on them' idea.
Incredibly, those bottles also work as elephant repellants.
If watching reels has taught me anything it's either cucumbers or alfoil for cat reactions. Just make sure you video it.
I find it better to blast them with the hose.
They soon learn because they hate getting wetYeah i tried this but one bottle wasn’t capped because i couldn’t find the cap. All the neighbourhood cats started hanging out and having sex on that corner with the uncapped bottle.
huh
it does work but not milk jugs
the bottles have to be see through
cats have stopped pooping since
get a cat and make him/her poop on their side
Read that you need something strong smelling they won’t like. They were suggesting coffee grounds, moth balls, etc. if you spot the cat doing it you could make a loud noise to frighten it off. Maybe talk to the neighbour and ask them to make a spot in their garden that the cat likes to use. Cats tend to like secluded areas. Ours go under the house, which is good until we need to crawl under there. In the old days we had an area of big leafy plants that gave them privacy.
Acquire a pet wedge-tailed eagle.
Get two and rent them out to the surrounding neighbours for an eco friendly side gig
Poop in his backyard and see how he likes it.
The poo jogger.
Me to my neighbour: hey can you control your cat, it’s always roaming my yard at night antagonising the possum in my yard , and shitting all over the place
Neighbour: nah
Also me: trims over hanging branches of neighbours tree over and deposits them in a neat bunch in front of his property
Same Neighbour: HEY YOU CANT DO THAT!
Did you put cat poo in the tree trimmings?
.It never occurred to me to return the trimmed branches. It might be legal but doesn't sound like it will nurture neighbourly relations.
nurture neighbourly relations.
Old mate already sunk the friend-ship many years ago
@Jimothy Wongingtons: Fair enough. Maintain the rage!
Came here to suggest this too!
Do it!
Neighbour's cat did same with ours. My wife complained to the neighbour. She said it's good compost for our lawn. They've moved, but I didn't really care; I got on with the girl's dad who past away a few years ago.
Personally I would have gotten on with the girls mum but no judgment here
Stacy’s mum does have it going on - or so the legends say.
As does Stifler's
@Ulysses31: Stiflers mom did indeed also have it going on

Especially if she was still alive.
get a dog
What if they get along and both poop on op’s lawn
Flick back over with a shovel or get a large dog.
An action activated solar light might be a deterrent, most cats are pretty smart though.
When you flick it makes sure to hit their windows. That shit sticks.
Depending on the council you can trap a nuisance cat (they will provide the trap at your request) and you take it to the council pound. The cat can be collected by the owner after a release fee is paid.
Motion activated sprinkler setup. It should only take a couple of nights for the cat to get the message.
Sureguard.
Get a slingshot.
Illegal, last i looked.
But it's the original measure of speed!
"Goes like shit off a shanghai!"
Slingshots? Illegal?
I've heard it for 30-odd years. But obviously laws are complicated… and vary state by state (although, some federal overlap/overrule)
https://www.legalaid.vic.gov.au/guns-and-other-weaponsI would think it's somewhat "common sense". A slingshot for messing-about safely at home is no different to a nailgun.
damn, didn't know big w was the black market for kids' toys https://www.bigw.com.au/product/wham-o-aqua-force-slingshot-…
Something for flinging water balloons doesn't come under any state law.
In WA you can't buy any "proper" slingshot. You can however make yourself one, as long as it doesn't have an arm brace.
@banana365: I'm from WA.
Same problem, there are always many stray cats where I am and the council do nothing about it. I started trapping them as the council will pick them up. I have cameras everywhere and noticed a few that I couldn't catch for weeks with the trap so I ended up getting one of these to add to my arsenal.
Scarecrow Motion Activated Sprinkler Repellent
It has helped a lot although now I want to buy 10 and daisy chain them together. Also fun to watch my nephew get hit by it because he forgets it's there.

I used this with success. Have to reapply it after it rains. Keeps my dogs out of the veggy patch too.Terrible reviews
Nerf gun
Is a late night activity…
Reminds me of when my wife took my 5yo niece out for a walk and saw a guy walking a cat on a lead. My niece's look of disbelief was misunderstood as interest so the guy asked if she'd like to stroke it. "Yuck, no! We shoot cats that come into our garden!"
The guy grabbed his cat and almost ran away. The "shooting" was with a Super Soaker.
Broken Glass on top of fencing haha, Na probably do a talk with neighbor first
Stray cats don't last long around us - there are too many foxes prowling at night
"foxes"
yes, foxes
Woosh
@O15: As cunning as a fox who's just been appointed Professor of Cunning at Oxford University?
I was letting my cat out and I thought he was just staying in our backyard. I was mortified when my neighbour told me he was jumping the fence and pooping in his garden and was incredibly apologetic. I immediately came over, cleaned it up and sprayed it with a plant safe urine-off like spray, and also stopped my cat from going outside again.
So talk to your neighbour and let them know. If it still keeps happening, speak to your council regarding options.
Decent owners like you are very rare.
A decent neighbour to be sure. Also curiously naive. What cat owner seriously expects a cat to understand property boundaries?
Those things are roaming killing machines.
A bit presumptious, are you not? We had thought the fence was cat-proofed as we installed rollers which for nearly 8 years prevented the cat from jumping. It looks like he realized he could use a plant that had grown big enough for him to use it to jump over the rollers.
Given his age, we decided that the series of events would be enough for us to now keep him in full time.
I had the same problem and tried all the natural remedies (OzBway) but in the end this worked 100%. Just monitor for drips after initial install.

May need to buy direct. O/s at quite a few stores near me., but heaps in some areas.

We just bought a new place and the neighbors cat takes dumps everywhere in the yard! It annoys me too, it smells SO bad. I like the neighbor and we get along though, in a similar boat to you I want to bring it up but not piss them off
Try spraying common, cheap household vinegar in the areas where the animal roams.
I want to bring it up but not piss them off
If only people had common sense and wouldn't get upset when you point something out.
get a dog
They shit a lot!
Send the dog to the neighbours lawn to do his thing
https://www.albany.wa.gov.au/documents/81/cat-deterrent-meas….
We have sprayed the homemade spray in the past around entry fences and it has done the trick, there is many suggestions from the council’s website
Try spraying household vinegar in the areas where the animal roams and or defecates.
Enjoy the delights of suburbia and selfish neighbours… /s
Op never had a sand pit for kids?
Dont approach your neighbour unless you want conflict. Some councils have strict rules about cats. In my councils cats are not allowed out at all. The council will free of charge provide a trap. Once caught they collect take to pound then approach the owner.
Most cat owners will not all the sudden keep the cat indoors and dont actually realise how far a cat will roam.
yes. get a cat trap from council.
they will have to pay to get it out.
plus it will get checked for registration.
Used to have a gel gun, neighbours cat learned real fast. Motion activated sprinkler or one of those motion activated pet deterents which emit high pitch tone are about best option now.
My neighbours cat kept defecating on my driveway and the bonnet of my ute parked out front. I have a dog and it was probably doing it in spite of it because, you know, cats are a-holes. Anyway, didn’t take me long to catch it red handed, I snuck up and sprinted at it while yelling expletives and scared the buggery out of it. Hasn’t come back since.
did that once and the neighbours thought I was nuts
How sound was their judgement?
Well it wasn't the neighbour with cat and they just stared at me Indian style
Note they weren't indian
Step 1: Hire a cat trap (many councils hire them out).
Step 2: Trap cat.
Step 3: Surrender 'stray' cat to local pound.
Step 4: Wait for your neighbour to pay the release fee to reclaim their pet
Step 5: Repeat process indefinitely until they become responsible cat owners.Mate of mine had a cat allergy, a cat intolerance and very powerful sling shot, cat only visited once.
Yeah I will echo others. I grew up with free roaming cats but now realize its extremely irresponsible.
Get a cat trap - a cat in your yard is technically a wandering / stray cat.
Shanghai with clay projectiles.
You can buy cheap spiky plastic lattices to lay on the ground where the cat poops. It won't hurt the cat but will make it feel unwelcome.
Cats are habitual creatures that do the same rounds every night. Once the pattern of entering your property to take a dump is broken you're unlikely to see it come back.
I can't believe there are other suggestions to firstly approach the neighbours.
Of course, not aggressive.
If that doesn't work, then https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/15642959/redir (no, don't get the dog).
I get multiple cats. Have no idea who the owners are. Approaching wouldn't work
Been there and done that and problem solved…. Need: Kids (or grown ups), gel blaster and a stakeout.. great fun had by all.
This was happening to me. Installed a sprinkler with a motion sensor. Took a few days to break the habit..
Scatter mandarin peel. Worked for me.
Attracts mice and rats which attracts more cats.
what's the best course of action?
Talk to the neighbour
Home made chili water.
Panadol works wonders on cats
