Recommendations on a Camera for Kids for US Trip

Hi all, next year we’re going on a five weeks trip to the US.

Wanted to get decent (but not too expensive) camera for the kids to give them for Christmas so they can take it on the holiday.

So yeh, looking for any recommendations…

Originally I was thinking a point n shoot style, but now wondering if an action cam might be better? Though photos on them might not be as good… particularly on the cheaper end of things.

Cheers!

    Budget?

    How old are the kids?

Was considering a tg -7 for a cam I could keep in my bag but let my two toddler use. They are about $600 though.

    • Not sure on budget honestly… though not $600 each hah…

      They’ll be 8 & 13.
12/13 yr old has an iPhone SE already, but it’s constantly at full storage already 😂

      • That has a very decent camera. Just sort out the cloud sync.

Realistically, kids don’t take good photos anyway. So use your phone or whatever for the photos, and get the kids a go pro or something for videos

    • Unless there's a desire from the kids to take photos, they are going to be more interested in living the moment than taking photos. And yes, they will be poor.

50 blurry shots of the same angle, then 3 days later 50 blurry shots of another angle. The end.

    Don't the kids have phones?

    Buy something that uses film.

When I was 10 I went on holidays with a disposable fujitsu camera. It took horrible photos, but getting it processed at the end was half the fun.

Buy them each an iphone 7.

Turn off the mobile search- i.e.put it in flight mode. That will give longer battery life. It is then easy to upload them to the cloud

The camera on an iphone is very decent.

A regular camera is ok but (and i have just been through this in the last 6 months with my kids) digital camera arent popular anymore. Even second hand is not cheap. I bought my 19 year old a 10 year old olympus camera from her recent trip to egypt. It was $70 off marketplace. Sure, not expensive but she pnly used it for the trip and now it will sit in a drawer for ever.

An iphone 7 can at least be used for other functions - games, internet, etc

Or after the trip you just resell them for a similar purchase price

  • Personally, I would discourage the camera use and just get them to look around and enjoy.

When we used film cameras, we took a couple of photos and then looked around and enjoyed the sights. Now we constantly take photos and miss a lot of stuff.

    • It’s my wife’s idea, she wants to see it through their eyes… see what they find interesting, fun etc…
