Redeeming Aeroplan Points for Flights

My partner and I both took up a credit card deal posted on OzBargain some time ago and managed to rack up >50,000 Aeroplan points each.

We now would like to redeem them, flying out of Perth. Probably looking for a nice week in Singapore or Hong Kong :-)

I just cannot work out how to actually do this. I understand that Star Alliance is in the mix somewhere, so have an account with them. Logging into Star Alliance, I only have about 7,000 points with them, which seems a bit low.

What is the basic process of redeeming these points on flights? I have looked at quite a few guides but still do not get it at all. It might be a bit of a lazy question but hoping some OzBargain whizz will be able to ELI5 for me…

The points you see in your Star Alliance account is from your everyday spend. Can transfer them out if you need to.
Log in to your Aeroplan account to see your 50k points and redeem flights.
Perth to Hong Kong should be 45k points in business one way w/ singapore airlines.
You can add a stopover in Singapore for an extra 5k points.

    • Thank you. So I buy the flights through the Aeroplan site at the end of the day?

Yes. And you can buy points to top up (Aeroplan usually has discounts or bonus points).

If you make booking to some other country in SEA via Singapore (like Ho Chi Minh city) for the same amount of points, make sure you check their business is actual business. I saw flights at 45k points as “business” but only for the short leg from SIN to HCM is business, the longer flight from Australia is economy.

    • Yes! This is an annoyance in the aeroplan booking page. Look around at the filters and you should be able to hide mixed class flights.
