New version streamer on the way?

    • +16

All Chromecasts are being discontinued by Google..

      • -2

They are being replaced by the new Google streamer…

20% faster, more ram and ethernet…

        • Yeah but more expensive and can use it as a home hub.

        • +1

i'm glad new one has bit more storage.

          • -1

@hopper: Yes…. If I was looking at a new device right now, I'd ignore the upcoming chromecast sales and wait for this to arrive.

            • @jv: I have my Google ChromeCast TV connected to a USB hub with ethernet, I don't need a lot storage space, so may not need to upgrade it unless there are some new features I need on the new streamer.

              • -4

                @superforever:

                I don't need a lot storage space

The storage affects how many apps you can install on the device.

The storage affects how many apps you can install on the device.

That is why I said I don't need a lot of storage.

                • @jv: what apps do you need that uses much storage?

I've got about 20 apps installed from all catchup TV (Oz, UK, USA, Canada), kayo, YT, VPN, Stremio, Plex, doesn't miss a beat on 3 devices. Unlike installed directly on android TV. And 2 of mine have ethernet the other outside has wifi, no difference in usage.

All Chromecasts are being discontinued by Google..

No @jv. As @iuselect rightly pointed out: they're being discontinued.

They are being replaced by the new Google streamer…
20% faster, more ram and ethernet

Also, no. They're not being replaced, they're being superseded. And it's 22% faster, not 20%. Sheesh, for someone who thinks they're always right, you really failed on this thread. Did you even read the link you yourself posted below? smh

          • -4

            @KangaDrew:

They're not being replaced, they're being superseded.

It the same device, upgraded, and in a different format…
The remote is exactly the same.

            • +2

              @jv: No. It's not.

              • -3

@KangaDrew: Yes it is, it's just an updated version.

                • @jv: Sure mate. You're always right and never wrong. How silly of me to think you could actually be wrong about something despite cold, hard facts being so readily available to you.

                  • -4

                    @KangaDrew:

Sure mate. You're always right and never wrong

Not always, just most of the time.

                    • @jv:

Not always, just most of the time.

And just not this time. If there's one thing we can all count on here it's your OCD usage of bold text and your hubris.

                      • -1

@KangaDrew: You've been using a lot more bold than me in these comments…

                        • @jv: Congrats, you've made your second accurate comment in this particular thread.

Actually, this was your first one, but, sure mate… you believe whatever you want to believe. 👍🏼

That's just your opinion, so it doesn't count.

                                • @jv: Ahhhh but yours does? Got it.

                                    Of course…

                                    • @jv: I live your style JV. Only difference in the remote is this one has back light and ability 'to find my remote' - I'll be picking one up if under $120.

                                      • @Pootie Tang:

the remote is this one has back light and ability 'to find my remote'

My current remote can already do that.

      • Are they going to stop working or Google is going to stop selling them? I'm imagining they will keep working for 3 or 4 years but get slower and slower.

        • I'd imagine they will keep working but no longer be updated.

        • Are they going to stop working or Google

No, they use the same OS as the new one about to be released…

          • @jv: Yeah so it's just going to get slower over time and eventually they will stop updates (after a few years)

            • +1

              @bleeder:

              (after a few years)

              Possibly…

Still, a good investment over 3 years.

              • @jv: Depends on the price of the new one

  • +6

A nice discount but it has been <$50/$60 pretty recently.

Google has announced a 'successor', but looking at the pre-order price it will be US$99 (this is US$49) and will probably be sold alongside this and the HD Chromecast.

    • +2

will probably be sold alongside this and the HD Chromecast.

Google will be ending production on the Chromecast, so will be sold alongside until all the stock are gone.

      • +1

That's disappointing, maybe time to get a Fire TV.

        • -5

          That's disappointing

Nope, new device is faster, more ram and has ethernet…

          • +2

@jv: Unless you want a cheaper device.

            • -4

@Hiphopopotamus: One that supports less apps from the Google store? Sure….

          • @jv: Finally!
            I'm very excited

        • I have a firetv 4K stick, one of these google chrome cast 4K and shield tv. The firetv is the worst of the lot imo I’d take a chrome cast with google tv any day over the fire stick. Chromecast is just as good as my old shield imo. Though I don’t use heaps of apps so storage isn’t an issue for me.

          • +1

@Garyd123: Interesting, I have read comments on these 2 that go both ways. When Google stop selling the Chromecast though there will limited <$100 options left.

            • @Hiphopopotamus: It’s not even close firetv interface is terrible and has ads in your face. The chromescast is much snappier and the remote is better

Being replaced by the new Google streamer device…

I now have our house set up with a heap of Google Chromecast TV 4K.

Do I really need to buy more?

PS luv the way I can now bang the same moosic into to every room in the house. Great way to wake house guests :-)

  • Great cheap unit and easy to use streaming services in 4k and also install new apps and games. Sometimes its a bit slow switching apps and some games, but fine for most people. The new version coming is only a small improvement in speed bringing it in line with the firestick 4k max. The Chromecast struggles with game streaming via moonlight, whereas the firestick is ok, but not perfect.

  • +1

I just bought one of these, I don't think google will brick them.
My Chromecast Audios are still rocking just fine years after they were discontinued.

    • +4

I wish they didn't stop making Chromecast audio. Such a simple but useful device

      • +1

WIIM mini is the way to go for that now

      • They actually sell for alot more than their original price these days. I should bought 10 of them when I saw them for $25 at JB's.

  • I can confirm that FREE20 can be used again on the same account.

  • Would this be any improvement over my 3rd gen chromecast IF I am ONLY using it for screen casting from Chrome browser and never any apps or streaming services?

  • +2

    Runs stremio ok?

    • +1

      Runs stremio ok?

      Yes and the best.

      • this is the best for running stremio as compared to others like firestick? am i able to just download stremio on chromecast and use it?

        • Both can download and use it.

  • Would have jump on this if it was about $50 and return my fire tv max I bought recently.
