  • what kinda cider? and how many per case i wonder

    • -1

On the BWS website product description of the Castaway cider, they say that it is fermented after adding CANE SUGAR into the mix! They describe the result as medium-sweet. Y U C K.

    • I've tried Castaway Pear cider before and I personally enjoy it. Some of my friends say it is too sweet, and it is certainly quite sweet, but it is refreshing on a hot summer's day, I definitely recommend giving it a shot if you like pear cider. I haven't tried the apple cider but I can only assume it is also reasonably sweet.

  • The castaway cider seems to be the same price at Dan Murphy's.

    • +6

      As is the Oettinger.

Hope BWS do another 20% off all beer and cider soon then price beat at Dan's then pay by ING Paywave for a further 5% off.

    • All of the products listed are 29.90 at Dan Murphy's.

    • +1

Dan Murphys and BWS are both part of the Woolies group. so not that surprising.

  • +1

The Tun Bitter (30 x 355ml cans) seems probably the best value. I have never tried the beer though the store clerk told me it was Australian made. I think $30 a carton for beer is very good value and quite like Oettinger Pils (German made).

    • +3

      Love Oettinger.

      • Oettinger has always been that price at Dan Murphy's

    • The Tun beer is the worst value. The beer is so bad that when it was served at a uni function people were paying for drinks at the bar rather than drinking that swill for free.

    • Last time I checked Tun is made in America.

    • TUN imo is the worst on offer for $30 in terms of beer taste…I still have a case that I bought like the week it was released…I dislike it that much.

  • +1

Wow. Any of those beers any good? I have never tried any of them.

    • Oettinger is honestly first or second of my most hated beers (not including "experimental" beers), had it a couple of times a few years ago when the local sold it for $8 a 6 pack. Bitburger is not good either IMO.

      • +4

Both Biburger & Oettinger are the cheap beers bought at Aldi & other discount supermarkets in Germany… ie - bottom of the barrel as far as German beer goes.

        • +1

Bittburger definitely is in the top echelon of Beer in Germany. It's right up there with Raderburger, Krombacher and Warsteiner.

        • I second this, used to live in Germany/Switzerland, you could buy a 6 pack of 0.5l cans of Oettinger for the equivalent of AUD $4.50…

    • +1

No, they're not great. They're like the German version of VB. Cheap and nasty.
The exception is Gage Road as they are local and have made some alright beers in the past. I haven't tried their pils, but none of these beers would really compare to even Coopers let alone Redoak or Holgate.
      That's why they're cheap.

      • -1

ahh so they are watered down?

Wonder if its locally brewed via VB, since they got busted they had to find something else to water down?

      • +1

Beer afficionado sites would disagree with you. Oettinger and especially Bitburger get very good reviews, which IMO they definitely deserve. They are fantastic beers at this price and the fact that they are brewed according to the German purity law ensures they are free of the crap and additives you find in some cheap & nasty local beers.
I, for one, am off to get me a carton of Bitburger!

        • I agree with fsb667, have had bittburger and is pretty good especially for the price. I found Oettinger a little metallic and watery.

anyone tried Hollandia, is it any good?

    • I lived in Germany for quite a few years. Bitburger is a great bier. One of the best. But if your used to aussie beer, you may not like it.

  • +3

It seems if you have a Dan Murphy's nearby some of these can be had there for $29.90 a case.

    • +3

      good saving for ozbargainers

  • +2

prefer the Bittburger between these imports.

  • +2

mmm..see they also have 20% off single beer/cider/premixes prices when you buy 6 mixed(not the prepacks)sorry no container volume above 500ML also.

I believe most of the Australian beers and ciders here are Woolworths home brands.

  • +1

    Too bad they're all rubbish..

  • Quick question regarding cider… is this any good (cost/quality)?

    http://danmurphys.com.au/product/DM_365361/three-oaks-origin…

    or would this be preferable?

    http://danmurphys.com.au/product/DM_331438/tooheys-5-seeds-c…

    • Out of those two, I definitely preferred 5 Seeds.
This is my current favourite Cider: http://danmurphys.com.au/product/DM_915237/pipsqueak-apple-c…

      • hmm okay. I've only had the Kopparberg and Strongbow ones and prefer them on the sweeter side. I've heard that is nice but something around $40 a slab is preferable.

Do you prefer the normal or cloudy 5 seeds cider?

        • I'd say the 5 Seeds then IMO.
You might prefer the 'Cloudy Apple' one that they do if you prefer yours a little sweeter.

        • +1

Thanks for the help! With the days getting hotter I'm trying to find a nice inexpensive cider.

        • From time to time you can get Strongbow for $40/case. I grabbed Strongbow Clear last time they did this deal, though admittedly it was some time ago.

    • 5 seeds is nasty nasty. It's got an overpowering and disgusting sweet taste, it tastes like lollies, not cider.

      Avoid at all costs.

      Can't comment on three oaks.

    • +3

I have only had the 5 Seeds out of those two but I can definitely recommend it. I'm not a beer drinker but a cold 5 Seeds on a hot day is a great combo. Also I much, much, much prefer drinking out of a glass bottle as opposed to an aluminium can.

    • 3 oaks is made from crush, 5 seeds is made from juice concentrate.

3 oaks is much the better cider, although they use too many sharps and not enough bittersweets to round out the flavour. There are no bittersweet cider apples to be had in Australia, so they have to import them from the old country. Perhaps thats why they up the use of the granny smiths and use less bittersweets.

A good cider for a good price is the westons scrumpy cider for $20. A genuine cider through and through.

    • i saw go with the 3 oaks. its one of my first choices for pear cider because of the taste, size of the can (500ml rekordeligs get warm before i finish them) and price
      i love 3 oaks

I just noticed Dan Murphys are selling this:

    http://danmurphys.com.au/product/DM_710888/ol-bluey-alcoholi…

Definitely picking some of that up this evening!

    • $7.90 for a 6 pack nice!

      • +1

Not much more then ginger beer in woolies!

        • It's almost laughable isn't it?

      • Bought a carton from Dan Murphys Welland. Bloody good stuff…absolute bargain for $30.

    • +2

Damn! I've had a long long day. But you have inspired me to go out and get me some of that!

      • +1

On second thoughts… argh stuff it, I'm too lazy. Tomorrow, always tomorrow.

    • Ol Bluey is awful, it tastes more like bad apple cider than ginger beer. I wouldn't drink it even if it was free. Check out the label, it says something like "wine beverage", haha

    • Picked some up, it's alright but just looked at the best before date: 07/12/12. I know it's only best before and it'll still be fine for a while after this date, but I thought everyone might like to know if they planned on drinking anything else before this (so you don't go and leave it for a few months without realising) :)

  • +3

    Bitburger is pretty nice imo.

  • +3

All these alcohol deals… So beautiful…

  • +1

just bought the pear cider ( I have been an apple cider drinker for years, and if buying strongbow I prefer sweet variety ) the pear one was really sweet, I really loved it, going back tomorrow to get 2 more cartons

    • The Castaway ciders are great in my opinion. With this new Gage Roads Ginger Beer, I can't really see much reason to buy my cartons from anyone other than WOW Group breweries :) (For a 'blonde' type beer, 'Dry Dock' is a great option and cheap too, around $32 on special, not sure if it is included in the current bevy of cheap cartons at Dan Murphys though)

  • Hollandia is fine if you don't want anything really special but just want something to drink or your mates come around.

  • +1

These same specials are available at Woolworth liquor too. BWS and woolies liquor share the same specials now

    • is anyone able to confirm they have seen these on special at woolies? I know they share the same specials in the woolies catalogue, but do BWS do exclusive specials as well?

Edit: "Specials available at BWS & Woolworths Liquor in VIC stores only from 28th November - 4th December

These specials also apply for stores in the Lavington and Corowra Stores.
Specials may not be available in all stores."

      seems like it should be

      • +1

Well there available in my woollies liquor in WA

      • +1

Saw this special at my local Woolies Liquor in Canberra

  • TUNs are pretty good.

    • No they really aren't.

  • +3

Castaway Cider is actually my favourite cider (i haven't tried that many), even though it's the cheapest.
The apple and the pear are great. I find most other ciders are too sweet, and taste like cordial.

    Strongbow: Good
5 Seeds: Nice also, not as nice as Strongbow. I like the crisp a little more than the cloudy, the cloudy is a bit tangier.
Crumpton Oaks: Terrible, really bitter and wine'y.
Rekorderlig: Too sweet, but some nice flavour combinations, strawberry & lime is one of the nicer ones, because the flavours balance out the sweetness.
    Koppaberg: Too sweet from memory.
    Monteith: Not bad, from memory.

Dan Murphy's regular price for Castaway Cider is $29.90.
    http://danmurphys.com.au/product/DM_360418/

    No deal!

    • +4

I came here specifically to downvote you…

  • The Hollandia is good value. It's actually quite a nice beer.

  • Bitburger is a class beer, very tasty and at that price i will be buying a case or 3 for Christmas. I have continually found in oz that bottle shops don't see beers from Europe as good quality i think which i think is bad in some ways but it means they also sell it cheaper which helps me :)

  • The Castaway apple cider is good, but has nothing on Mercury cider - its lacking depth of alcohol flavour.
Bear in mind that the scumbags have used 330ml bottles, if they were 375ml a slab would cost $34, still pretty good value…but
