NBA League Pass Subscription Cancellation Offer 15% off: 1-Year Standard A$148.74 @ NBA

211

If you happened to be living in South Africa or India or somewhere exotic when you signed up for NBA League Pass and have since moved back to Australia, you may have received an email recently saying your subscription is renewing at AUD$174.99.

Not the best discount, but assuming there’s a bigger crackdown this year and if you can’t be bothered jumping through (VPN) hoops, read on.

If you log in and go to Manage > Cancel (https://payment.nba.com/cancelsubscription) and choose “Other,” it will offer you 15% off to stay, bringing it under AUD$150.

Interestingly, I had the option of upgrading from the Standard plan to the Premium plan while still seeing the price in $ZAR, but I’m not sure if that will drop off.

  • So they now detect people who signed up in a different country with a VPN and start charging them the Australian price automatically?

    • +5

Huh? I lived in Romania for 11 months last year before subscribing to league pass and moving back to Aus.

I'll be leaving again shortly to make other purchases…

    • +5

Yes, last year people who signed up with a VPN got an email saying they had been detected to using league pass in Australia.

  • +1

Looks like you can accept the "discount" and also still cancel before the sub starts.

    • Thanks for testing this. Was considering doing this as a backup option, and moving to a new country with a new account.

Lol, umm yes, this is exactly what happened to me.

LP is so shit. It's almost if the browser version makes it deliberately hard for you to watch games.

    • Netflix is the same can't access higher quality, pushing you to use their apps. Good video on it here.

    • yep since they moved to the MS platform it's be absolute crap shoot in terms of what breaks or works …

I've been using Argentina for 3 years now and still haven't gotten the email to say I have to use Australia… Argentina really went up in price for the premium though

Your should look at moving to Turkey - its nice this time of year

      • My Turkish one is forcing me over to Australia. Just noticed I got an email last December that alerted me to this fact.
"Thank you for being a League Pass Subscriber! We’ve noticed that you’ve been enjoying League Pass from Australia. To align your subscription with your viewing country, your League Pass pricing will be updated to the retail price in Australia next season (2024-25 Season)".

Is there a way to move back to Turkey :-)

        • yeah I am just creating a new account for Turkey now. ₺839.99/season

It does ask for a card from Turkey though..

    • Like you been using Argentina for 3 years but just got the email

'We noticed you've been enjoying NBA League Pass Season-Long from Australia. To align your subscription with your viewing country, your NBA League Pass Season-Long will be updated to the retail price in Australia this upcoming season.

Your NBA League Pass Season-Long subscription will renew for the 2024-25 NBA season on or around September 20, 2024. Your payment method on file will be charged AUD 174.99 at that time.'

I got my renewal email this morning - it is in Turkish currency - $36 for premium

    • Can you use any card or do you need to jump through hoops with revolt or something similar?

      • +1

I use my normal westpac card

    • Same got my renewal email this morning also… Turkey FTW!

"Your NBA League Pass Premium Season-Long subscription will renew for the 2024-25 NBA season on or around September 20, 2024. Your payment method on file will be charged TRY 839.99 at that time."

      • In Turkey as we speak, haven't received renewal email yet , hopefully come through the next couple days so can see if I need to flee the country

Basketball has too many stoppages in it. Have you been to a game? It's 60% mascot dance offs and t-shirt canons. I'd rather watch televised mahjong.

    • +3

You sure you watched BASKETBALL and not CRICKET?

      • +3

Actually, it's NBA that has the stoppages. Basketball at the Olympics was enjoyable because less stoppages. I think I read the average NBA game last 2 - 2.5 hours, for 48 minutes of actual game time.

        • +2

Different rules mate. The number of time outs each half. 10 minutes running game vs 12 minutes game, where they stop the clock for inbounds and other calls.

          • @Fredfloresjr: That's fair, I just preferred it as a viewer. Good to know though.

            • @kiriakoz: Yep I much rather watching the Olympics basketball than NBA. Too many stoppages in NBA

          • @Fredfloresjr: *their own rules that are not played any where else in the world

Orlando Magic! Orlando Magic! Woah oh oh AOH!

  • Off topic but what's the consensus cheapest way if I wanna sub to League Pass? Use a VPN to register from a different country?

    • +5

That's kind of the discussion here. You could roll the dice and see if a VPN works for you. But it seems like they are cracking down hard lately. The Aussie price of $175 is actually way more reasonable than when it use to be like $300.

Also haven't done the maths on which country is cheapest for the coming season. You would need to test from each location. And then some countries are harder with different credit cards, addresses, etc.

    • cheapest way if I wanna sub to League Pass?

my IOS based App Store account in Turkey last year worked out pretty cheap. Will see if it works again when renewal time comes

  • +1

Thanks OP! I got the email and hesitated on pricing, 15% off makes it more appetising.

I received renewal email this morning for TRY 839.99.

    • Weird, I'm getting renewed for TRY 619.99

      • +1

Weird… I'm getting renewed for TRY 599.99 in my email

  • I have been a long time South African subscriber and never had any issues (reside in Australia). I have not received any email…

Is there any way to see that you are on the s*it list?!

    • +1

just manage your subscription in the portal and you will see what the upcoming billing is going to be.

if it's in Rand then you are good to go.

    • My theory is shared subscription. My friend and I shared one and my other friend didn't share and didn't get email. Let it renew. Don't touch a thing. They are too stupid to crack down at this level

      • Nope, mine is unshared and I still got the email this morning on auto sub renewal that they will now charge me Aus price of $174.99. I haven't been in Aus since end of the reg season either the stupid cants but I have been paying from Canada and South American countries for around a decade.

        • Yeah same re country hopping. I'm on US pricing of $160 for premium and 50% off as I was testing around summer league

    • I'm in the same boat. my CC is expired and I used a VPN to SA to check what they were going to charge and it was AUD. So I cancelled.

  • I pay AUD and there's usually much better deals in the first month of the season.

    • Pretty sure they only come out once 25% and 50% of the season have already passed.

      • How to get annual pricing? I only see monthly

        • You don't have many options left to try then…. except maybe clicking on Monthly and see what might be on the next screen, eh? ;)

No need to fear the interwebs. It can't hurt you too much.

          • @bohn: Done that, still says monthly price. Even tried using Apple Pay, it still tries to charge monthly.

            • @Pricebeat: seems to only be on league pass premium
if you click league pass it only has an option to upgrade to premium monthly, not annual.

              https://i.imgur.com/9bghJct.png

              • @bohn: Yeah that works. But the standard annual plan in this deal, I guess isn’t available to new subscribers?

                • @Pricebeat: I think last year you could get the annual plan on league pass (non premium) - but this deal is actually for people who already have a subscription added. By attempting to cancel, league pass offer an incentive to stay. So this is not meant for new subscribers anyway.

                  • @bohn: Just tested the scary interwebs and noticed it’s only available via app. Price without coupon seems to be $154.99/year. Also can not use a coupon on the app

  • I signed up through South Africa last season, but this season it’s set the payment to AUD (in the app). Still haven’t got the renewal notice though

    • I'm on a similar boat. I have been auto-charged ZAR (South African Rand) for around 5 years now but I live in Australia and have been using league pass in this country. I now have the email saying they will now charge me $175 AUD. However, my credit card details are expired.

Wondering if I have to VPN to South Africa, renew my subscription and hope that they will charge me ZAR using an Australian credit card.

      Hopefully there is a workaround.

      • what makes you think they'd charge you in ZAR since you received the email ?

        • I was thinking of cancelling my current subscription and then try to renew while VPN'ing from South Africa. See if they charge me in ZAR currency.

Or I can cancel my current sub and sign-up using a different email address, then VPN from South Africa to try get the ZAR currency. I may need a South African credit card to complete the purchase though so not sure.

          • @Loudungca: I think you'll find (at least this has been my experience) that trying to add any card now will require the country of origin of the card to be the same as the location. I have tried South Africa and Turkey - and both require a card from that country.

I have an account with a card added from AU - that failed. Also tried Google Pay and that failed too.

            • @bohn: Thanks for sharing mate. I think the only avenue now is utilise the 15% off during the cancellation process to bring it down to less than $150 AUD.

I'm like you, I refuse to pay the AUD pricing! Hopefully someone comes up with loophole.

              • @Loudungca: Cheapest way is prob a league pass premium shared between 3 people

  • Have been on Argentina for the last three years. Was using a Citibank card which is now expired. Received an email today that my plan will be increasing to ~175AUD

Anyone had any success with a VPN registering this year yet?

    • +1

no, it wants a credit card issued in the country of the VPN.
I'd be happy to hear about a workaround , even though the LP service was absolutely disgusting last year.

I refuse to pay AU pricing that's for sure.

      • I agree with you. It is not worth the AU price.

I tried to watch a replay after a game had ended and it kept buffering and support told me to wait four hours before watching. Also had issues on Mobile where full screen is so zoomed in that it cuts off the scores. Not to mention all the ads.

  • Apparently students can obtain a 40% discount, Australia is on the list of eligible countries too.

    https://support.watch.nba.com/hc/en-us/articles/938258645762…

    • I have tested it. It works out to be expensive $13.19/month (~$158.28/year) on the website and they don’t offer annual sub on the website. Coupon can’t be used on the app. Annual price on the app without coupon is $154.99

      • That's based on 12 months tho?

Nothing stopping us from cancelling in May/June based on the playoffs

  • My credit card has expired, has anyone else been able to update their payment method? I've tried 2 cards.

    • I need to pay TRY 619.99 to renew my subscription and my credit card has expired. I've tried using my Wise and CBA cards and they don't work.

      • Yes, I'm having issues using Wise as well..Customer people said debit/prepaid credit cards are not accepted (don't know if they used to be)

  • So is this discount obtainable for new sign ups? I think I might have a league pass account from 10+ years ago somewhere…. Has the functionality improved because it was pretty annoying back then

    • You will need an active subscription to be able to cancel it.

  • If you like the NBA 2K games you can pre-order NBA2K25 Hall of Fame Edition and it comes with 12 Months of League Pass. It's a crazy price for a game $229, but it's about the same cost as a League Pass Premium subscription.

  • +1

Keen to hear if anyone has had success either updating an expired / closed credit card for a foreign sub, or success signing up with a new account via vpn somewhere. I’ve been using a South African account and have the renewal offer in ZAR, but haven’t been able to update my payment method.

    • I'm on a similar boat. I have been auto-charged ZAR (South African Rand) for around 5 years now but I live in Australia and have been using league pass in this country. I now have the email saying they will now charge me $175 AUD. However, my credit card details are expired.

Thanks OP, worked as per instructions. I started in Canada and got booted to AUD. Next renewal showing 15% off as "future promos".

    • Keep in mind though that this is only $6.25 cheaper than the regular price they offer through the app. As long as that works for you.

  • Tried different regions on different VPN's. Can get through to the payment page but failed every time on two different cards. Seems Microsoft has found a way to lock this down.

  • Been using a league pass via Turkey for a few years now. Just got this email, looks like I'll have to use an Aussie account now

  • Anyone know if premium with the 3 device limit would enable you to share the same account with different households?

    • yes

  • I'd purchase the AU sub myself and sell the other slots (keeping one for myself), but for me, the price is showing at $229 AUD for Premium. How are people getting the $148 AUD pricing?
